"I gave you a perfectly reasonable answer." I'm absurdly proud of my poker face. The fact that even equivocation would be impossible in our relationship did not please me at all.
"I did not ask you for a 'reasonable' answer."
I took a breath and told the truth, as near as I could admit it to myself. "I liked the idea of someone else knowing that I am. I thought you'd be disabled badly enough that I needn't destroy that."
"No other motivation there?" That grin split her face again, the one that said she knew exactly how enthralling her appearance and presence could be.
"None," I laid some Nordic ice on my tone. Open lie or no, Marika is vain enough without confirmation.
"Alright." She's insufferably cocksure, but courteous enough to let me lie for the moment, "You transform into a seal again tomorrow. I will return to stay with you until you change, then take you to my house directly after."
I nodded. I assumed she was waiting for me to shift so I'd be less of a flight risk in transportation.
"It is a pleasant house. Open and airy. I had a stocked diving pool installed." Her voice held a touch of avidity. "Do you read or watch television while in your seal form?"
"I can, but generally don't choose to." It seemed a strange question. "Why do you ask?"
"Because internet and cable have not been installed yet, but I could have downloaded media set up if you like? I assume reading physical books would be...challenging." A bare smile again at the idea of my flippers or teeth turning pages. Great. Even relatively humorless vampires feel the need to mock my ringed seal anatomy.
It is hard to read though, and not just because of my flippers. I lack the attention span in that state to digest written knowledge any more complex than a menu or a street sign, unless strongly driven to know. But that wasn't my point.
"No," I clarified. "What is my happiness to you while you can't drink from me anyway? 'No other motivation there?'"
She stood smoothly and her aphroditic eyes took me again. Her fingertip pressed into my lower lip until the idea of blood pounding beneath her touch took me too.
"None," Marika answered as I had, released me, and walked out.
I can never tell whether or not she's lying.

Anonymousalmost 5 years agoBravo. The back story was very interesting. I don't even recall if there was sex...skimmed through it if there was. You had me at Selkie on the run and possible vampire romance (although she hates being a dairy cow). Clearly she's telling this story from the future as you have hinted.
Wonderful job at providing the psychological perspective of her managing other people, say in Greece. Character psychology will make a story compelling and interesting, (must be done accurately). Lack of this element produces cardboard cutout characters.
The Vampire is too powerful, able to hear conversations through doors. While that may be a flash reveal, now it makes her all the more difficult to fool. Super heroes are really boring when it comes down to it due to the lack of stakes. Batman is much more interesting than Superman because the bat can die, be hurt. Superman is just boring and usually an idiot (anyone who looks the other way at the organized hidden hand manipulating the world is really dense--especially when they could end it).
