I love well-told stories with a clear eye on character. Quirky or unexpected twists are always welcome, too!
As for my own writing, I try and ground it in a certain believability - even the fantasy stuff. Whether I'm entirely successful or not is not really for me to decide. I guess I'll find out. :)
Update 14/06/18: I've just submitted a mother-son story that I'm quite proud of, although it's probably a bit too flowery for some. :)
I'm also working on more updates for The Legend of Kara Khal. This is turning into a big story. What started out as a fairly straightforward idea for a multi-part (but still relatively linear) story has done that whole branching-out-in-my-head thing that professional authors tend to be quite ruthless about, but amateur authors tend to be more indulgent with. Well, I'm not a professional... :) That said, the new plotlines do seem to be presenting opportunities for more varied forms of sex, so there is that...
