Though my hindrance is caused by doubts of your
Similar affection, even were your love
Proved I would in loyalty hesitate for
I have yet promised another my love.
I hope and fear that you may now find it
Hard for your heart to forgive a traitor.
I am in disgrace and in shame admit
That my love for you is wrong and if later
Discovered will hurt and confuse a man
Who is worthier than such as I give.
But you in innocence are the cause and
Instrument of betrayal and guilty live.
Though my faults in virtue are indeed great
Your unknown crimes deserve so cruel a mate.
