"Gabriel," he heard Moira insistently at his shoulder bending over him. "Gabriel," she said again when he did not give any indication that he heard her. "We must get her out of those wet clothes."
Gabriel glanced at Moira and then back to Devonny. He laid his warm palm of his hand against her face.
"Gabe," Elijah's hand was on his shoulder. "Let them take care of her. You should change clothes too."
Gabriel nodded his head at this and slowly stood. He allowed Elijah to lead him from the room, glancing back at Devonny before Moira closed the door behind them.

Devonny burned. And then she froze. She was sick, she understood. She could hear Moira's voice floating around her and someone's soft masculine murmur. Gabriel? Or was it Eli?
She tried tried to fight through the darkness that enveloped her. She tried to open her mouth to speak but there was nothing only the darkness pulling her down further into its embrace.
After so many 'chapters' this story is just becoming a snooze fest. It takes forever to progress and Devonny and Gabriel's 'romance' is moving slower than molasses. Their tepid relationship is a little reminiscent of Edward and Bella from Twilight with his bad attitude and miniscule charm.
...got Gabriel out there to rescue her. Seems like this might shake him out of his iceberg? :)
Note to theDuskyGirl: I understand how busy you are, but I certainly hope you can find time to continue this story soon. Fans of Devonny and Gabriel are all waiting breathlessly.
great story, need the next chapter NOW!!
THIS STORY IS AMAZING! TO THE PERSON WHO COMMENTED ON IT JUST BEING RAIN... THIS STORY IS AMAZING SO STOP LOOKING FOR STUFF TO CRITICIZE! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DUSKY GIRL!
I am totally diggin' this story but girl it's rain. Now if you written it was 40 degree or below fine I understand why she became sick. At least something good came out of Devonny getting sick. Gabriel realize he care for her. Hopeful he man up and get his woman.
This the best freakin story that I have read in a long time. And I am a book worm who reads a lot. I love the characters, description, and the dialogue. Don't change anything, except maybe posting sooner :-). Devonney is a beautiful character full of strength, grace, and charm. I don't view her as some weak knee virgin, always in need of a knight. Anyone who has the strength to shield their love daily from another, and continue in their day to day tasks is quite strong to me. Keep writing great stories, so that I can keep reading great stories.
This is WONDERFUL stuff!!! Keep Devonny just as she is - strong, intelligent, and feminine...just as she should be! Gabriel loves her just as she is!
Let me just echo what the majority have said about this story - WE LOVE IT! The characterization of Devonny is quite appropriate for the time period and I, as well as many of your literary fans, LOVE the wide-eyed, innocence Devonny displays but that in no way makes her weak. Devonny is definitely a strong woman as indicated by the fact that she stood up to the perverted creep trying to make her a whore, left her previous place of employment, stepped out on her own & is trying to make her own way as well as she can! That in and of itself speaks VOLUMES about the strength of her character. This woman is trying to get along in a world, in a time that says she shouldn't, but guess what? She is and she is doing it with grace. She is just as intelligent as Gabriel and Eli (in a time when she isn't expected to know how to read). Many women - especially women of color - were expected to be nothing more than show pieces without joy of common sense or book intellect. Now how is that not strength?! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep this story going and PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep Devonny's character as it is because to change it would do her (and Gabriel) a great injustice. Gabriel loves her just as she is (just doesn't fully realize it yet)!!! This story is 5 stars hands down....now we just need you to update on a more regular basis and stop leaving cliffhangers :)
