It is puzzling why the writer chose to sacrifice reader respect, self respect and credibility for a page of helpless self demeaning male humiliation.

Why is that writer?

The story took upon itself a task which upon reflection seems quite onerous, namely presenting two themes or premises which seem to be contradictory. The first premise I would call Fantasy and reality are on a continuum (to put it mildly a very debatable premise.) And the second I would call the one thousand and one nights named after the famous tales Queen Shahrazade tells to King Shahryar the queen had to keep telling her king or else her head would be off along with the rest of the previous women who were all presumed to be unfaithful (or could we add boring?) Like Shahrazade the wife is on a survival mission. Much smarter than her dumb husband, she knows that as long as she keeps his peculiar interest going, her marriage could survive (now why would she want it to survive that’s one mystery the story does not explore; still, each marriage is sort of a mystery in and of itself). <P>

The problem: the two premises come from very different paradigms; one assumes more or less normal loving relations where both sides are more or less equal partners and participants in the marriage. The other: relations which are hanging on a thread when one side has lost the real motivation to be in the marriage and needs to constantly be entertained to stay in it or else…

The two premises collide most dramatically when it comes to the wife’s place. Why would she take part in the games? Is it a genuine participation from an experimenting partner or a stressed out wife who realizes (as she admits later) that she was given a last chance to keep the marriage and would do and say anything to achieve that goal, all the time knowing that if she does not come with some results she is out. Clearly the latter could even drive her to initiate some erotic action so that the husband could find it accidentally later (like Jerry).

To complicate things further there are also at least two reads which are mutually exclusive as far as the reality behind the games. I would call the first possible read: ‘the sinister read’. According to which the husband gradually discovers how wrong he was about his wife’s sexuality, as step by step he stumbles upon her very rich secret sexual life. In the processes the wife trains the husband to think that he actually creates in his “perverted” mind what has already been in existence. Still, he remains oblivious to the true nature of his wife’s pre existing sexual life (the real sinister version), or somehow just before the end he becomes aware by an independent evidence to that preexisting reality (This would have been the version I would have preferred). The wife is motivated to engage in this scheme as she does not want to dismantle the marriage (for whatever reason), but erotica and sensuality are only the surface layer here. The problem with this read is how does she convince the lover to provide services that fit the precise stages of her explorations with her husband? Essentially this whole charade is highly unstable and bound to fall apart from a triangle to either a new couple or three singles. <P>

With the second read ‘the innocent read’, the wife’s progression into sexual openness or into being adventuress coincides with her husband’s pace of explorations. The remaining problem is how do you really explore etc. when you know that ‘a knife is hanging on your neck’ (the one thousand and one paradigm). I feel that this time the story tired to swallow too much. Maybe letting go of one premise or at least making it less controversial (the first one) would have prevented the story from getting stuck in the both the credibility of the wife’s motivation and the questionable reality (in the story) behind the games. Regardless, the story was provocative, intriguing original and thought provoking, I’ll go home happy with less than that with most of Lit stories...

I began by disliking this story from the jump. Bob was considering dumping his wife of 20+ years because she is not exciting. What an asshole! I find many commenters on this site have little tolerance for other’s kink. We all have them. It doesn’t make us good or bad, only delightfully different. I found this a story of awakening for both Sue and Bob. They are at a stage in their life where they are just too comfortable with each other. This cuckolding or sharing is just the thing for them. It might not be for everyone, but it works for them. They are to be having fun. Who are we to criticize their kink?

This is a well done story, and plausible-ish sounding in that the stories would be great for a while, then they needed more and more different ones to keep going, making it plausible to go to 'reality'.

Because of it being sort of plausible, It's scary as hell. For both of them. But to me it is far more dangerous for the husband. Especially when he got told he won't get a blow job until Jerry allows it. Scary stuff. But, and a big but, hubby is way turned on by it.

I sure as hell hope the marriage works out and it all doesn't come crashing down.
