"Wendy and I have been talking. We want you to set up a trust fund for the education of Derek junior and any other children you might have. When you've done that, I'll transfer all the cash into it. Something good has to come out of that mess."

"If that's what you want, Dad, I'll do it."

"Pay the income from the house into the new account and I can take it out in cash"

"Well, if you're careful, that should keep your whereabouts secure."

That night we all went out to a New Year party. Around midnight we had the obligatory countdown and the toast to the new year. When the cheering died down, I looked at my little party and filled their glasses before proposing another toast.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I give you New Beginnings"

We all raised our glasses in the toast. As we put them down, I walked around and knelt on one knee in front of Wendy.

"Wendy Turnbull, would you do me the honour of becoming my wife."

Wendy threw her arms around my neck. "Oh, Yes, Derek! Yes! Yes! Yes!"

I put the engagement ring on her finger. It was a perfect fit and so were we. As she sat looking at the chip of diamond, I stood up. I had the best feeling I'd had in more than seven years. It truly was a new beginning.

I'm sorry but in my eyes Wendy is just as bad. She forced him into doing something he didn't want to do. A partner should support one another and respect their decision. Not force him back into a traumatic experience he left behind him many years ago. He should have packed up and left her as well.

Les miserable. Prison, redemption, forgiveness, reconciliation, death, and a fresh start. A path of thorns. Happy new wife, happy life...

Terrible story and terrible woman. She could not have lived him and done what she did not only cheating, but destroying his career. Story doesn't have enough payback on Preston.

A woman who not only cheats but gives to another man what she won't give her husband...smh. That's so incredibly fucked up

To the most recent anon comment that the author failedto address the son's colluding to hide the wife's cheating. No, James said that his mother had told him not to say anything because she was in Brighton to plan a special surprise for Derek. Perhaps a bit more explanation detailing what the wife said might have been helpful, but the issue was addressed and given that Brighton is a resort area on the sea (English Channel), that was a believable reason. Also, the son seems like a thoroughly decent fellow, so what other holes did you fantasize were in the story? 5***** for a thorough burning of the bastard (and of the cheating wife as collateral damage) and for a well written story.

Failed to address her son colluding with his mom. A lot of holes.

Wow 20 years for a beat down. UK sentencing is apparently barbaric. Wtf? Yeah I know he got 5 years but whatever. Extreme provocation made it only 10 years? For first offense. Nah not barbaric, savage and backward is more appropriate.

I. knew how it was going to end!!! He was going to confess that he killed his son's real father. Oh ......... seems I was wrong. Great ending anyway.

Very good feeling to read stories written by an Englishman. Correct grammar and spelling is another bonus, but the capper is the mention of Brighton and Ditchling in this story. I spent most of my childhood and growing-up years in Hollingbury, an outer part of Brighton, and Ditchling was just over the South Downs, below Devil's Dyke.

Sweet memories. Thank you

Wait how was as an enabler? Derek thought that was the case but it turned out to be wrong. Derek cut his son out of his life based on a misinterpretation of facts and events. He messed up big time. On the other hand Jessica was a serial cheater. She passed off another man's child as Derek's. Wtf? She actively fell in love with Donald and though he loved her and was going to leave his wife for her. Her fantasy was batshit crazy. And somehow she still loved Derek. Umm thatbis garbage. He knew and and somehow let it slide for 25 years? Later she has a long affair with Preston because he was a powerful man and she was turned on by the illicitness of the affair. Why would any rational person not sssume shebhad chested many times in between. Derek comes off not only as weak with his decision to not confront, but he actively chooses yo not avoid or minimize prison time. Huh? No one does that unless they have mental issues.

She's a serial cheater and her son is an enabler, but all is forgiven. This story requires more than a willing suspension of disbelief.
