The next day?

From the very first sentence I felt like I had started my reading in the MIDDLE of the story. What happened the day before? There was no introduction. Who are these people? I kept stopping to check the page number trying to make sure I hadn't skipped a page. Then I stopped to see if maybe this was a sequel. Very disconcerting.
