From the bed I heard Ally say, "This is the best day of my life -- ever! I shall never forget this afternoon as long as I live. Thank you all so much. I love you all." A little sob of happiness stifled her from saying more. Mike cradled her in his arms and stroked her back in love.

We all told Ally we loved her and loved her body. There were sighs of contentment from everyone. Ally had joined the fold.

Carl and Mike finished editingTrial and Error two weeks after we videotaped the final scenes at a local mall. As before, they'd been somewhat secretive about the totality of the film even with me and I felt I was the Director. We knew it would follow the script but not how it would actually look and come across on screen, yet we'd all watched scenes played back at various stages during the videography.

The seven of us gathered one afternoon in Mike and June's media room to watch the finished product. Carl put the DVD in their player and hit the button. The rest of us sat back in the dimmed room, the only light coming from the edges of the blackout curtains that covered the windows.

The film had become eighty-five minutes long -- about ten minutes longer thanLove Comes Twice, our first film. We watched every second of the film but occasionally got distracted during the scenes with sex and lovemaking. Thus, as the final credits started to roll across the screen seven naked bodies lay around the room in various stages of wetness and satisfaction.

No one could think of any changes they wanted to see in the film. Accordingly, Carl turned the film over to Harold Winslow at Adult Films International the next day.

Six weeks later, with a lot of advanced publicity, AFI released the film to the public, sending thousands of copies to adult stores all over the country and opening up the film for sale on about three hundred web sites.

Trial and Error rapidly became a bigger success thanLove Comes Twice. To promote the videos AFI had even created a 'gift pack' of the two, boosting the sales of our first film again. Three months later our little film making company received over half-a-million dollars in new revenue. We were happy with the promotion and reluctantly let Harold and AFI publish the magazines and start to promote the films more widely.

Then, something extraordinary happened that changed everything and changed our lives forever.

I can still remember the date: March 10, a chilly day for our geography. We were holding a meeting and talking about our next film when the doorbell rang.

I opened it to find two well-dressed young men in slacks and blazers. Harold Winslow of AFI stood behind them with a big smile on his face.

"Yes? Hi Harold. Please come in," I gestured but wondering what this surprise visit was all about.

The three came in and joined us in the living room. Introductions were made to all of us. Ally slipped out to get refreshments for everyone.

Harold said, "I'd like to introduce Jim Bullock and Ed Mellick of Sundance Enterprises. They're a new marketing and promotion company with some interesting ties to the Sundance Film Festival and I wanted you to meet them. They have an interesting proposition for you."

Carl and I were probably more aware of the implications of their visit before it registered on the others as soon as we heard the word "Sundance". I sat down stunned; I sort of guessed where this might be going. I got all warm inside.

Harold turned to us and introduced each of us in turn to Ed and Jim just as Ally came back into the room with a tray of soft drinks: "Carl, Kara, Nancy, Sy, Mike, June and Ally." Harold gestured to each of us as he went around the room. The two men nodded in a friendly way to each one of us. Ally came and sat beside me; she held my hand.

"So what can we do for you?" Carl asked in a friendly tone.

Jim and Ed looked at each other then Jim started talking, "We're a new company that's oriented towards the entertainment industry -- particularly film and video. This will be our first venture, however, we have already amassed a lot of money to invest and we have some excellent contacts in the film and media distribution industry. We've seen your two films:Love Comes Twice andTrial and Error. We love them by the way. More than that, we think the general public will love them too, except for a minor problem we have with each of them. That's why we're here."

I could guess what the problem might be if the general public was involved.

Ed picked up the conversation, "As Indie films, your films are superb except they're too graphic. We are here with money and the offer of production assistance if you are willing to turn them into 'R' rated films rather than the 'X' versions they are now. We think there's a lot of money to be made by re-releasing the films this way."

"REALLY?" Sy asked, his voice about an octave higher than normal. He looked stunned.

Jim continued, "Yes. I know this might take you by surprise. We've negotiated with Adult Films International -- Harold's group - to return the decision-making rights about this change in emphasis back to you. They want and properly should continue to get a cut of the film's take even as it goes into the Indie market plus they'll keep all the 'X' version monies as they're already doing. We are content to continue to allow the 'X' rated versions of the films to exist in the market; it's too late to stop them anyhow."

"You mean there'd be 'R' and 'X' versions selling simultaneously?" I asked thinking of the implications.

"Yes," Ed answered. "It's happened many times before.Alice in Wonderland, Caligula, and aClockwork Orange are a few of the more well known films that had simultaneous versions on the market at the same time, not to mention a lot of horror films.Debbie Does Dallas even got cleaned up into an 'R' rated version but it never went anywhere. I guess it really didn't have a plot."

"What would we have to do," Carl asked.

"We'd like to review both films with you, almost scene by scene and shot by shot. We have an eye for what the rating system means and what will pass muster to garner an 'R' rating. Basically, we want to shift the emphasis in some scenes from the focus on genitalia to facial expressions or shadows or other mechanisms to metaphorically show what's going on, if you will. We sure don't want to mess with the storylines -- those are great."

"Is this a sure thing?" Nancy asked.

Jim answered, "No. It's a shot at seeing if we can preserve the mood and story you've established in each film but do it without the graphic sex. Mind you, there can be sex -- we see a lot of that. It's just got to be a little veiled in some way. Female parts are OK. Male parts are OK. Together they make an X-rated movie. Got it?"

A couple of us nodded.

Sy asked, "Is there a timetable or schedule? Oh, and what kind of funding are you talking about to make these changes?"

Ed responded, "The Sundance Film Festival is in Park City, Utah every January; that's nine months from now. We'd like these films -- both of them -- to debut on the next program." He went on, "To make submission deadlines we have about five months to make the changes. By the way, I personally don't think there will be the need for a huge outlay in time and money to make the changes. Your 'passionate' scenes are long and if you could re-do each one with different camera angles and so forth, I think in some cases that might be enough."

He continued, "And you asked about the money. Well, let me make sure you understand, we are an independent film marketing and promotion company not connected with the Festival. We liked the name 'Sundance' too. That said, we have a great track record since both of us have worked in the industry for the past ten years. The deal is that AFI, Harold's group, will take ten percent of the re-done films and we take forty percent. The rest is yours. It's a good deal and it leaves in place the deal you have with AFI on the X-rated versions. We can put you in touch with others in the industry that can tell you that higher percentages for marketing and production are not at all unusual. Oh, the money we'll give you up front is our earnest money to cinch the deal; it's yours free and clear but you modify the films to our satisfaction for that."

Both Ed and Jim looked at us expectantly.

Carl and Sy were making eye contact with each other and nodding; I watched their mood closely.

Finally, Sy said, "Can we get you or your legal guys talking with our attorney? I like the sound of all this, but I want to make sure we're not screwed or tied up in some way on future films or that we're giving away something we don't see or understand.

"We understand fully," Jim said. "We'll be pleased to see her or him as soon as you want. We want to get this thing going so we make January's Festival."

Mike asked politely, "Perhaps I missed it. What is the amount of up front money?"

Ed and Jim spoke simultaneously, "One million dollars."

You could have heard a pin drop in the living room.

Three weeks later we were re-making the scenes fromLove Comes Twice. Jim acted as point person fromSundance Enterprises for "acceptability" for our first film; Ed said he wanted to doTrial and Error; he left and returned to the west coast until we were ready to work on that video.

We'd spent two weeks working with Jim, scrubbing through the DVD version and re-blocking the scenes forLove Comes Twice. Even though the sensitive parts of the film were erotic and featured lots of sex in every conceivable manner, in analyzing and re-blocking the scenes we were all business.

I noticed partway through that Jim and Ally had some attraction to each other. She tended to stay around and try to be involved in the activities that he did. They were both quite transparent in their attraction to each other, yet her evaluation of Jim became increasingly evident.

The second week Ally asked me if she could date Jim. He'd asked her to dinner and wanted to take her to a little independent movie theater about twenty miles away to see a film that had previewed at last year's Sundance Film Festival..

I laughed and felt very motherly even though there was only six years difference in our ages. "Ally, go and do whatever the mood seems to suggest. Thank you for asking, but you don't need anyone's permission."

"I just don't want to make it awkward," she said. She came and put her arms around me.

"Remember our philosophy about happiness for the people we love?" I asked her. "If you're happy, we'll find a way to be happy with that even if it involves someone outside our circle or it means we lose you. That's how much we love you." We kissed and she went on her way and from her reports the next day, enjoyed the film and Jim's company.

A few days later as I worked on my lunch in the kitchen, I heard Ally and Jim talking in less than loving tones on the back patio as they had their lunches. Jim had apparently just figured out Ally's full role with our little band of thespians. His voice had become elevated and stressed, "You mean you've sleep withall of them? Men and women? Carl, Sy and Mike? June, Kara and Nancy? All of them?"

I listened carefully to Ally's answer, "Yes, I love each of them. They are my family not just the people I work with. I love them emotionally and physically, with my mind, body and soul."

"But you fucked them all?" Jim said again, exasperated. His emphasis on the word 'fuck' clearly showed his disapproval of her actions.

Ally said in a really irritated voice, "You may think of me as a slut but I see myself as a member of a loving and kind group of people that love me in return. I love seeing them pleased, I love pleasing them, and they love seeing me pleased. Kara told me that if I went off with you and disappeared into the sunset they would still love me although they would miss me dearly. They aren't jealous -- like you're turning out to be; they see the situation differently -- with a different lens."

"But, what about commitment? I know we've only been out a couple of times and I'm not asking for anything serious -- yet. But if you're in a relationship doesn't that imply some commitment between the two people?"

"Yes and no," Ally answered in an agitated voice, talking very fast; "If commitment means ownership the answer is 'No;' if commitment means I am now sensitive to your needs, compassionate about your feelings, and involved in your life the answer is 'Yes.' If commitment means you want exclusivity -- like you own me - the answer is 'No;' if commitment means you can see yourself as part of a larger changing and adapting family of loving people, the answer is 'Yes.'"

"You are blowing my mind," Jim said in a loud voice, anger evident by his tone. "It's like you've redefined what a relationship is."

"Yep," Ally said. "I have and so have all the others here. Haven't you seen how they all interact with each other? They're not swingers, they're lovers. The relationships they have and what comes out of them and goes onto the films isn't just about lust, it's about love. This household or three households I should say are really all interchangeable with each other. Each of us is in all the other's relationships. It's unique and I love it. I love being a part of it and don't want that to change."

I didn't dare listen any further so I tiptoed back into the other room with my sandwich before either Jim or Ally caught me at the window. I smiled to myself and wanted to hug Ally as soon as I could; she'd held her own in their argument with a strong understanding of our philosophy that she'd uniquely made her own. I would be curious to see how Jim came of the situation.

That afternoon we again started doing script re-writes. Carl stopped us quietly at one point and said, "You know for each of these films I have hundreds of hours of videos that we didn't use for various reasons. When we did some of those rejected videos, they were too tame -- more 'R' rated than what we wanted at the time. I think we need to think of script re-writes in terms of the footage that we already have."

We all high-five'd Carl for his brilliant idea of reviewing the old footage. Why we hadn't thought of it earlier? This idea would save us days of script rewrites and of re-shooting scenes as it turned out.

Late that same day after we broke up, Jim disappeared to go back to his motel. I could tell he'd reached his limit with Ally, and she with him for that matter. We broke out a bottle of wine and some soft drinks and went to sit out by the pool. The weather was beautiful and we all wanted to be outside after having spent most of the day working inside.

As we sat having a couple of different conversations, I quietly said to Ally, "I'm sorry but at lunch I couldn't help but overhear part of your conversation with Jim. I just wanted to say I liked your philosophy and the way you stood your ground." I took her hand in mine and kissed her palm, wrapping her fingers around the kiss.

Ally rolled her eyes, "Oh, Jim is such a stick. He's rooted in tradition and not willing to move outside the box he's been given. I don't think he wants a girlfriend, I think he wants a chattel. A year ago I would have been dazzled by him but now I want someone that thinks more broadly about themselves and about the world. I'm surprised he got involved with this film; I would think it upsets his sensibilities."

I commented, "Jim will be here two more days then he leaves and Ed will be here in a few weeks as we do the second film we made -- the one you're in. Perhaps the two of you will light each other's fires." I had a lecherous grin as I looked at her. She laughed.

About a week later, after talking, Carl and I made an open invitation to Ally to move in with us. She'd started spending more and more time with us, staying over many nights. We loved it and so did she. The few nights she wasn't with us she often stayed with Sy and Nancy, or Mike and June.

When we asked Ally, she thought about our invitation for a minute and said, "Of course. I'll bring the rest of my things over tomorrow." Having Ally around most of the time proved to be a boon to our sex lives. We were all loving and horny creatures anyway, but put the three of us in one house, in one bed, add in some horny neighbors, and we inevitably had some sort of sexual romp most nights and throughout the weekends.

I thought at one point of all the hobbies and things I'd been interested in over the years that had become commonplace or boring in some way. We finished reviewing all the out-takes of our first film -Love Comes Twice -- and Ally and I started to work on re-blocking the scenes we were sure we had to re-shoot. Ally and I loved to work together and were more than twice as fast as we were when working alone. We also went over each other's work and had many improvements to the film. She had good ideas about how to script the scenes and retain the essence of the original film but with less graphic sexual detail.

We spent two weeks re-shooting various scenes from our first film. One thing I noted was that we had a lot more out-takes due to humor and laughter than in the original. We were a happier and more joyous group of people.

Carl and Mike sequestered themselves from dawn to late at night for four consecutive nights reworkingLove Comes Twice. Ally and I found interesting ways to amuse ourselves. Carl would come to be exhausted and cross-eyed, fall asleep between the two of us and be instantly asleep. We missed our lover.

Fortunately, at the end of that week, the two men declared success in reworking our first video and we had another screening. The film passed our inspection but we were a pretty liberated group by this time. Carl FedEx'd six copies of the DVD out to Jim and Ed on the west coast.

A week after we'd shipped the first film, Ed Mellick showed up one Monday at lunch ready to work on our second film --Trial and Error. Ed's cheery, optimistic and enthusiastic attitude about life made him a pleasure to work with and be around. We all enjoyed his company and humor.

Wednesday I noticed some serious chemistry between Ed and Ally. It showed by way of a touch or glance that lasted a little longer than necessary or a comment that verged on an invitation to something deeper. Thursday Ally told me in a quiet aside that Ed had asked her out for dinner and that she'd accepted.
