"When did you get so smart?"

"When I met this guy on an airplane."

"Yes, he had a sign on his neck that said, "I am very rich, marry me."

"The way you were dressed, any normal girl would have run away."

"Are you saying you are abnormal?"

"As abnormal as they make them."

"In that case, you married the right man. Everyone thinks I'm crazy."

"An abnormal woman marries a crazy man, and they have a baby. I wonder what Richard's going to be like."

"Probably like Oppenheimer; no one ever knew what he was thinking, but he always got the job done."

*************

Doctor Pearson walked down the corridor smiling.

"Doctor Luck, I don't know what she hit, but it looked almost like a Superman reverse 'S' on top of her head. The repair was very simple, and there is no damage to her brain. It's not even swelling. She is a very lucky girl. Get her a good wig, until her hair grows in, and it will be like nothing ever happened to her."

"When can we see her?"

"She will be back in her room in less than an hour. She may be a little groggy but she will be conscious. I will be back to check on her before I go home."

"Thank you Doctor, you work is much appreciated."

Jennifer whispered in my ear, "This is too good. We just have to remember that Gray has a gun, and he will use it on us."

"Sydney, Doctor Thyme is not allowed near Delicious room until I say it is okay."

"Yes ma'am, just remember he can shoot at us also."

"If he does, shoot him in the legs, but not the third leg."

"As you wish ma'am."

"Joseph, go to the chapel and tell Doctor Thyme they are closing up Delicious now. She is breathing on her own, but there is no cognitive brain activity. She should be out of postop in an hour and in her room in 20 minutes later. When Doctor Luck and I leave, he can visit her if he wants. Otherwise, he can go home now. It's all over."

Gray cried when he heard the news. Every dream he had for his future had just died. Nothing meant anything to him anymore. Every argument they had paled into insignificance now that she was mentally gone. He stood up to leave and found himself face to face with Jayden.

"Sit down sir; whatever you are thinking now is irrational. I'm getting married next month, and I need this job."

"Are you a mind reader now Jayden?"

"You don't have to be a mind reader to know what you are thinking sir. It will last a few days, as it did when I was in Iraq, and then you will move on. I wasn't as deeply in love with my buddies as you are with Miss Delicious. Soon your mind will compartmentalize it, and you will move on with your life. I'm sorry for your loss."

As he returned to the back wall of the chapel, Logan said, "You deserve an Academy Award for that performance. You didn't even break a smile."

"I was good wasn't I?"

"It was the best I've ever seen you."

******

Delicious was sleeping in her bed, with a little drool coming out the side of her mouth. I went to dab it off with my handkerchief, when Jennifer stopped me.

"Leave it there for effect."

"You are terrible."

"When you are at war, you use everything to your advantage. Right now, it's that little bit of drool."

"Jennifer remind me never to get into an argument with you, you cheat."

"You're just finding that out now?"

"You have blinded me by love. You can have everything I have, without asking for it."

"You've just taken all the fun out of my life. What's the sense of cheating, if I can have it for free?"

"You see, I can cheat to."

"I don't like you Even Luck."

"I love you Jennifer Luck."

"That's cheating Even!"

"Sue me."

"I can't, I would have to sue one of your corporations, and I am a partner in all of them."

"Do you see my love, I cheated again."

"Joseph, you can tell Doctor Thyme he can see Delicious now. We are leaving. Close the door while he's in there with her. If things start crashing around the room, get in here and save him."

"This has turned out to be a very interesting day ma'am."

"If you think today has been interesting, wait until tomorrow."

"Should I wear my vest?"

"We are going to be wearing ours."

"I'll warn the troop's ma'am."

******

Gray stopped at the side of her bed. She was bandaged from her eyebrows to the base of her skull. Three IV bags hung from the tree, feeding fluids into her body. She was pale as a ghost, and had fluid bubbling from the side of her mouth. He lowered the side rail of her bed, took some tissues, and cleaned her face.

He sat on the edge, and said to her, "I never meant for this to happen. You make me so angry, you drive me insane. I look forward to my life without you, and I see nothing. It's exactly what your father tells me you are going to do for the rest of yours. 'Looking but not seeing or thinking.' Such a beautiful young woman, with a mind like no other, doomed to darkness forever, because we couldn't agree to disagree. Isn't that the most stupid thing you have ever heard? We had to argue over everything. The arguing turned to yelling, the yelling led to fighting, and the fighting led to wars between us. This last one sent me over the top. I went to thermonuclear, and here you are. Congratulations, I win, but I lost everything I ever wanted in life."

"What are you babbling about now Gray? Why are you even here?"

"You're talking, why are you able to talk? Why are you able to hear? Why are you able to do anything at all? The doctor's said you had no cognitive function."

"You are the biggest asshole I've ever met. I had a crack in my head. They put a mixture playdoh and crazy glue together and patched me up. When my hair grows back you will never know anything ever happened to me."

"I'm going to kill them. They played me."

"Who played you; two infants playing in a sand box? It wouldn't take anyone with a brain to play you."

"Delicious, don't start with me. You are already in a hospital; you could be here a lot longer if you start with me."

"And you could be in jail."

"Between what Jennifer and your father did to me today, I would ask for an expedited trial, and a death sentence without appeal. They would both be dead alongside you."

"What happened to "Congratulations, I win, but I lost everything I ever wanted in life."

"That's not fair I thought you couldn't hear me."

"So you didn't mean it, you can leave now."

"You are the devil herself. Of course I meant it, but you drive me absolutely insane. You would drive God herself insane."

"Who told you God was a woman?"

"Jennifer, right after she hit me."

Delicious giggled. "She does have a way about her, doesn't she?"

"I am no longer allowed south of the Mason Dixon line, otherwise I'm dead."

"I'm beginning to like my mother-in-law better and better every day. The further you are away from me, the less we can argue."

"Is that what you've decided? Is that what you really want, because if it is I will pack my clothes and be out of here before your birthday. I couldn't stand the thought of being near you when you were legal."

"Yes, legal, but unmarried."

"That would be your choice, not mine."

"So you would marry a woman that drive you insane?"

"I can't breathe without you near me. I can't think when we argue. I have a choice; die from asphyxiation, or being driven insane by the woman I love. I'll take what I can get."

"I went to the library to draw electrical graphs, and all I could see was your face. I couldn't draw anything else. For hours on end that's all I did. I couldn't concentrate on anything else. I think deep inside I was trying to tell myself something. Jennifer made it easy to understand what it was. I need to get laid. She says I am sexually frustrated with you. I need you inside me desperately. I think the arguing will stop when we start making love. She told me we are wired as tight as the strings of the violin, and we are ready to break. I don't know if I can last three more weeks. Jennifer said she has the answer to our problem and I said the wrong word. I said I would do ANYTHING not to lose you. She smiled evilly at me and made me promise to keep my word. I always keep my word."

"No you don't."

"I keep my word to everyone but you, because you drive me crazy."

"How about your father?"

"He doesn't count, he's family."

"Do you have any more excuses?"

"Do you want to start another argument; if you do please leave."

"I'm not going anywhere."

"Then get undressed, turn off the lights and get into bed with me. I'm tired."

"The nurses will have a fit."

"Ask me if I care?"

"Move over, I need more room."

"I'm the sick one, you will have to make do."

"I will have to grab onto something to make sure I don't fall off the bed, and cracked my skull open."

"Bald men looked distinguished."

He climbed into bed and lay down on his side. "Can I kiss you, or are you going to bite my lip off?"

"Take your chances and see what happens. Just don't touch my head."

"I like playing with silly putty."

"It's not silly putty, its playdoh."

He kissed her, and she returned it passionately. He felt himself sliding off the bed, and reached for anything that would stabilize him. It just happened to be at the apex of her thighs. She opened her thighs, hoping for more than just an innocent touch.

"Lift up my gown Gray, please touch me."

"You're sick."

"If you don't touch me, you're going to be dead."

"If you scream we are going to have a lot of company."

"Five, four, three..."

Gray's fingers found their way through her distended lips and to the button which was out from under its hood. As soon as he touched it she went into spasm. Her mouth opened to scream, but his descended over hers to smother it. He didn't let up on her, as his fingers traveled south, into her opening. His thumb circled, opening her wider and wider, until her hips joined his movement. He added a second finger to probe her insides deep enough to touch her hymen. He banged against it, but not enough to break it. He whispered into her ear, "This is mine, and no one else's. I'm going to take it from your body and hang it from our wall so no one else can say they had you before me."

She bit her lips, flooded his hand, and the bed below her.

"I think I needed that Gray."

"I think so too. Now I have a problem."

"I'll take care of you after they finish giving out the medicine."

"Is that a promise?"

"Yes, and I will keep my word."

"I can wait."

********

Greta opened the door a few inches and said, "You are going to have company in less than five minutes."

Neither occupant of the room heard her. They were locked in each other's arms, sleeping peacefully.

The nurse pulled the automated medicine cart up to Delicious' room, punched in Delicious name, pulled out the appropriate medicines, put them in little paper cups, walked into the room and turned on the light.

"What the hell is going on in here?"

Delicious replied, "What does it look like we were doing until you walked in screaming? We were sleeping."

"He can't be in bed with you, it's against hospital policy."

"Is it against hospital policy for someone to help a patient get better?"

"No."

"I have been so agitated since my surgery I could not rest. When my fiancée got into bed, and held me, I was able to relax and fall asleep. I didn't need any drugs to dull my mind, and impede my recovery. I just needed him to be with me. If you take him away from me I will be a basket case all night."

Doctor Pearson was standing inside the entranceway to the room and asked the nurse, "Which is better Maxine, drugs or companionship?"

"As long as you sign off on it Doctor, my conscience is clear."

"Give her the meds, I'll take her vitals and give you the numbers. You can wake her up in the morning to do it again. Just make sure it's her and not him."

"I know a definite way to check Doctor."

"I remember that only too well Maxine."

"So do I Fred. Take these please Miss Luck and I will leave you to the capable hands of Doctor Pearson. Watch out for him, his hands have been known to roam."

"From that conversation, I take it you have a great deal of knowledge about those hands."

"It is against hospital policy to start rumors that are true."

Doctor Pearson asked, "How are you feeling Miss Luck?"

"Probably just like you Doctor, with my hands."

"Is she always this funny sir?"

"I'm sorry Doctor, Doctor Grayson Thyme, at your service."

"Miss Luck are there nothing but doctor's running around your home?"

"My five-year-old brother, Gordon, has not received his Doctoral Degree yet. He should get it within the next year or so. That young boy is absolutely brilliant."

"Please tell me you're kidding me."

"You know my father, Doctor Thyme, and many others are going to building a spacecraft to take us to another part of our universe. Gordon is the Navigator; and that is not a joke. He is as smart as or smarter than any mathematician on this planet. My IQ is 207 and he is smarter than I am."

Gray said, "I hate her. My IQ is 196, and she blows me away. How do you think I feel looking down at a five-year-old boy who can figure out a mathematical problem in his head and I'm working with the computer trying to do it. Sometimes life is not fair, especially when it comes in small packages like Gordon."

Doctor Pearson said, "I'm not going to tell you what my IQ is, because I would embarrass myself. You people are insane. What you must be working on is light years ahead of anything people are thinking about now."

"Doctor, the two engines that are already built are 50 to 100 years ahead of anything NASA has on the drawing board. The third one is nuclear, and is in the hands of the NRC. I will make you a wager that they have no idea what they're looking at, and will have to call her into their facility to explain what is going on inside of it."

"Miss Luck don't fall down again. What's inside that head of yours is too precious to lose. In years to come people will talk about you in the same vein as your father. You will both be called crazy in the best possible way."

"Can I tell him that please?"

"Yes, and with my best wishes, and hope for the greatest success of his mission. Go to sleep, and I mean sleep. There is no fucking around in my hospital by patients. Staff is a different animal."

"Good night Doctor Pearson, keep your end up as long as you can."

"Since my wife left me for another woman, I have been keeping that end up longer and more frequently."

"Good for you Doctor, would you ask Greta to step into the room for a moment."

"Yes Miss Luck, how may help you?"

"Nobody comes into this room for the next two hours, under penalty of death."

"Understood ma'am, enjoy yourself."

Delicious looked into Gray's eyes and said, "Sir, I believe you had a joint with a very stiff neck. Would you like me to lubricate it for you?"

"Miss Luck, you better be very careful with that joint, especially at the neck. It may blow its top."

"In that case Doctor Thyme, I'll take it slow and easy."

"I wouldn't do that if I were you. I might take things into my own hands and speed up the process considerably."

"I'll play with your dangling participle's to keep you under control. I understand with the appropriate amount of pressure on those jewels, even giants fall to their knees."

"So help me God Delicious, if you don't start I'm going to cum on your face while we're talking."

"Spontaneous combustion, I've never seen that before."

"Delicious..." He threw his head back as her mouth descend over his pride and joy.

"Honey, Rod is a Notary Public isn't he?"

"Of course he is. He notarize is half the towns documents. The town clerk notarizes everything for us. At the end of the fiscal year they checked to see who owes who money. Normally the town owes him money."

"Even, where is my hand?"

"In a very wonderful place."

"If you were to move very quickly what would happen to that wonderful place?"

"It could be torn from my body and cause me horrific pain."

"Does that mean you're going to listen to every word I'm going to say, with an open mind and not yell at me, because I have your daughter's best interest at heart?"

"Is this a continuation of our discussion from earlier this evening?"

"Sort of, kind of, yes it is."

"In this melodrama, am I'm playing Jayden, Gray, or Delicious."

"None of the above dear, you will be playing Rod."

"Oh good, I'm not in trouble, or am I?"

"If you play your cards right, you are the good guy all the way through."

"I like that part a lot. What do I have to do?"

"You do what you do so well: LIE"

"I can do that."

"I knew I could count on you. Here is the plan."

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"Rod will kill us both!"

"Not if you give him a letter of dismissal."

"I can't do that to him. He's been my friend since we were five years old. I'd rather shoot myself in the foot then do that to him. Why are you squeezing my balls?"

"I'm just trying to get your mind back to my plan."

"You have my attention, I don't want to lose my friend. Stop squeezing my balls. Okay, okay, I'll think about it . Jennifer you don't play fair. I'm beginning not to like you."

"Remember, this is for your daughter's future happiness."

"Rod is going to kill us."

"Trust me, Rod will be your friend after all of this is over."

"He's my only friend."

"I'll buy you another one."

"I don't want you to buy me a friend, I want Rod."

"Stop pouting, Rod will still be your friend, after he gets out of prison for attempted murder."

"I'm sure I don't like you."

"Richard is crying, it's your turn."

"I can't move."

"Why?"

"Your hand is still squeezing my balls."

"Whoops, sorry about that."

"I'm sure you are. I want Rod."

"Stop pouting, I'm sure Rod will still want to be your friend when this is over. You may have to give him a raise, maybe a substantial raise, but he will still be your friend."

"I'll probably have to buy him a car too. He's going to own me for a long time."

"He can only own you for seven years, and then we're going to move a long way from here. We're going to be away; far, far away. He can't file a lawsuit against you, if he can't find you."

I smiled. "Jennifer, you are evil. You are also very smart. I like that last part. I don't like parts 1, 2, 3, and 4, but number 5 is a winner. I'll keep you as my wife until the end of my life."

"I think you said that already Even."

"I was just reminding you of it. Tomorrow is going to be a weird day. I'm coming Richard; I'll be right back cheater."

************

"Hi mom, is dad gone yet?"

"What are you doing up Gordon?"

"I heard my brother crying, so I figured I would come in here and keep you company, while dad is changing him. What's up?"

"What do you mean what's up?"

"You and dad don't exactly whisper when you talk. Why are you firing Uncle Rod?"

"We are not firing Uncle Rod. We have some delicate maneuvering to do that concerns him, but it also concerns your sisters future. We need Rod to do us a very big favor, in a very big hurry. We don't want him to think about it, we just want him to do it. If he starts thinking, it could take weeks. We need this done by tomorrow night."

"Why don't you just tell him the truth?"

"When you get older you will realize the truth doesn't always work. You have to work around the edges of the truth to get the job done."

"I will never understand why adults always say 'when you get older you will understand.' If I told you a lie, you would spank me. If I told you a long story and got to the same point an hour later, you would still spank me. The only difference to me is I got spanked later in the day. I still got spanked. Tell Uncle Rod the truth and get it over with. The worst thing he can say to you is no, and when he does, then you can fire him."
