It's like the reader is experiencing the act of love making with the male tradesman. I love it. It's so sexual it almost takes my breath away.

Just so you know: in the first paragraph you say "in the 1880's... for womankind the world was much as before", but that isn't the case. It would be reasonable to say so of the 1850s, but a tipping point occurred shortly afterward. Girls (albeit only the children of the well-off) became educated as a matter of routine, which was a sharp contrast to earlier in the century. As is well known to students of British politics, the leadership of the British Conservative Party was rapidly converted to support of female suffrage around this time, as were the rank-and-file of the British Liberal Party.
