Asking for a stick of my time
She set the stick alight
I willingly gave her the sign
Talking about the future
Reading a palm
Divining the lines
Sharpening her wit
As she would a blade
She honed it to an edge
Wielding like the
sword of Damocles
To slice and slay
I closed my eyes
To the impending doom
Knowing all the while
It was my head
That would possibly
Be in play
The stick is halfway burnt
Aromatic clouds would float and roll
I wasn’t sure I could bear the toll
Her demeanor never changed
Knowing her grip is solid
On the shimmering blade
She fears nothing
I dread it all
All but I can see
She rules like a tyrant
Yet I obey
Though I fought all the way
Struggle as I might
She rules the day
Knowing she controls the play
Two thirds of the stick now gone
The cloud of smoke thinning in the air
Ashes filling the tray
A stick of time demanded
A stick of time handed
A stick of time, thirty years on, taken for granted
