I might suggest that you consider tweaking the lines:

"What cruel child

you have left behind"

By doing something like either add an "a" in the first line,

or reversing the two words in the second. - "Un-stilt" it, or double "stilt" for effect.

A parent's real nightmare — remembering their own parents' failings while committing new ones of their own.
