Days upon nights on the cot staring into the emptiness
of a cinder block cell with a narrow window
that the guards peep through every half hour or so.
Talking to shadows on the whitewashed walls,
waiting for replies,
hearing the voices.

Splits in the daylight break apart the darkness.
Twenty minutes of childlike listening.
Daddy in the doorway, red bells ringing,
being chased again and again,
hearing the voices
of women and children afraid of your face.

Violation of probation, six months added on
drunk in the park numbing the pain
Iraqi girl screaming in your brain.
Invisible in plain sight
hiding homeless
hearing the voices that won't go away.

Pharmaceutical flying and crying
no truth in a world of lies
closed doors locked without the keys
lost and broken
hearing the voices
pleading for rainbows in confusion.
