A heart beats in the long silences
Heard in the depths of nights spent
Gazing into the darkness.
And as the beat slows and the darkness deepens
I remember...
Such small things, to listen to your breathing,
As I held you I could smell your hair
And your breath caressed my cheek.
I remember the feel of the weight of you
In my arms, and the warmth of you
Spreading into me.
To find contentment in such stillness.
Lulled into sleep by the cadence of your breathing
And the feel of your heart beating next to me.

A heart breaks, wailing in long silence.
Waking in nights darkness from dreams
Of drums beating, mourning and left lying
In cold stillness. Listening to the wind
Sigh a woeful dirge through the trees,
Leaves rasping and boughs breaking.
I hunch deeper into my pillow
And pull higher the sheets
And there waiting begins a dull beat.
Heard in the long silences,
In the depths of the night,
Gazing into the darkness around me.
And as the darkness deepens and the beat slows down
I remember... such small things.
