"Who picked the name Stephanie," Steve asked. I looked daggers at him for a moment. Was he trying to give it away? Of course she was named after him.
"It was my idea," piped in Dan. I had sort of manipulated him into thinking of it and then shot down his other ideas while only suggesting only ones I knew he wouldn't go for. He added, "she's named after my great aunt. Sara wanted to name her Lucy, but we agreed that it would be too confusing."
"Oh, that's so sweet!" beamed Lucy, "Of course Steve was hoping you'd have a boy. He thought he could be the cool uncle and teach him boy things,"
"Not that I think you can't teach him boy things. I just always wanted to have a son, and now I can't," Steve interjected.
I locked eyes with Steve and said, "It's OK. I'm sure we'll get a chance to try again."

Anonymous9 months agoWell written, but with family like that who needs enemies? Call me a cynic, but I had each of my three children quietly dna tested soon after birth given my wife's known wild college days. Love her to death but still believe in trust but verify. It should be standard hospital procedure in this day and age. I can certainly understand in a longer lived world about couples drifting apart and finding another. But doing so and having children by another man during your childbearing years of marriage is the ultimate in disrespect. Yet it happens often apparently. We have a one and done agreement and I would enforce it without further ado.
