After several hours, the phone rang again. Tamika had called back with news. I watched Edie go from worried to ecstatically happy. Hanging up the phone she filled me in. "Von's pregnant! She didn't know so she hasn't been taking care of herself. They're holding her overnight for observation, but she's fine."
"Pregnant? I thought she couldn't have children," I said. "I guess Aunt Julia was right. Last time Jason went home, she kept asking Von if she were pregnant."
"I'm as surprised as you," Edie replied. "After she lost the baby years ago, they told her she couldn't have kids. That's why she so happy when they got custody of Jason's kids. She got to play Mama to them. Now she a mama for real. Oooh, I can't wait to spoil that baby."
I took Edie out to dinner to celebrate. Her choice of places, since I didn't know the area. We ended up at this funky little sub shop, with license plates and traffic signs covering the walls, and everything on the menu named after cars and car parts. It was delicious.
We spent the night making love and cuddling, our bond growing stronger. I knew we'd get together again, somehow, somewhere. I wanted to get to know thing fascinating, exotic woman well. Very well. I had no idea if we'd be able to pull the relationship thing off. But I knew we had to try.
In the morning, we exchanged phone numbers and email addresses. I promised to keep in touch. She did too. After a long hug and soul searing kiss, I got in my pickup and left for the long journey home. It was even longer now. I missed her already.
