Click hereI opened her door and walked around to get in. We were glad that it was only a 20 minute drive back to Fort Ord. We knew we could not even share a kiss as she let her soldier off at the front gate in case someone might be watching. Each of us was trying to decide what our last words would be, after really expressing our goodbyes at her house.
Annie pulled over to the side of the road opposite the main gate. We had 15 seconds! (That was how long the average drop off took, this had to look typical.)
We held hands tightly, down on the seat where no one could see.
I simply said, "Thanks for the RIDE."
Annie answered, "Thank you, MY SOLDIER."
This is a true story that Annie and I will NEVER FORGET!

Wonderful story. I remember my early days when I was in the Navy hitch-hiking but I always ended up getting rides for guys and a few times from couples. Never had such luck as "my soldier".
If you lookup Vietnam War on Wikipedia it says, Nov 1, 1955 to Apr 30, 1075. It was sometimes referred to as the Second Indochina War, Yes, I was in Fort Ord and enlisted with the Germany guarantee in 1959.
Nice little story. But 1959, Fort Ord, Viet Nam wasn't in the works yet.
