I'm guess the author didn't do breastfeeding or at least not successfully. A breast pump can be very convenient to use, but not the only way. It's definitely not an excuse to go lesbo.

Hand expressing into a baby bottle works very well too especially when the breast a very full. And yes, breastfeeding moms do have bottles at home. After all, why have a breast pump if not using the milk for later and to allow others to feed the baby?
