Mutation happens randomly and not because of environmental pressure.

Good adaption to the environment increases an organism’s chance to reproduce and pass on their genes to the next generation. As a result the species adapts to the environment, even though the individual don’t. Because again, they only change through random mutations.

I personally don’t mind stories based on fictional science but it would have been good if there had been a disclaimer.

triplerip (below), work in epigenetics show that genetic adaption can occur in the individual, and actually passed on. You can have adaptive changes to the expression and activities of your genes due to variablesyou are exposed to. Hit up wikipedia: "epigenetics"

So the author of this piece is not off. Also advances in technology will enable hacking of both genes themselves, and directed epigenetic activity after people are born. The billions of years of crude hit or miss evolution is about to change to directed evolution and our descendent/replacements will think of prior evolutionary method as profoundly primative.
