He handed Janie his gun and told her to keep it pointed at the redneck.

Once the gun was in her hands, she couldn't help but say, "Don't move asshole, or I'll be more than happy to blow your brains out."

The asshole had no intentions of moving. He was still stoned, sleepy, and barely thinking. He said, "Hey lady. I didn't force her. She wanted to be here, but she ain't worth dying for."

Janie begged to differ.

The PI picked up Kathleen and carried her out the door and towards his SUV. Janie quickly followed, placed the pistol in the front seat, and helped him buckle Kathleen into the back seat. Moments later, she was sitting next to Kathleen, holding her, and they were hurrying towards the nearest hospital.

The PI asked, "blow your brains out?"

"After seeing what's been done to her, I was actually considering it."

At the hospital ER, a nurse took her to an examination room and began to check on her. Janie was with her the entire time.

Kathleen didn't say a word, but the look on her face expressed misery and shame. Janie was doing a slow burn, wondering how her sister had ended up in this situation. She was seriously considering trying to hire the PI to take out some retribution on the redneck, but there wasn't time for that now.

Very little was spoken between the two. Whenever their eyes would meet, Kathleen would burst into tears. Once the tox screen came back negative for anything that should keep her in the ER, they moved her to a room, and the nurse gave Kathleen something to help her sleep. While she was out, Janie called Scott to give him an update. Then she called her manager to let her know what was going on. They had planned for something like this, and Janie would take the rest of the week off.

Assured that Kathleen would be out for a few hours, the PI took her to the McDonald's to retrieve her car. She thanked the PI, signed his invoice, and drove to a nearby Target to get her sister some clothes and also some soap and shampoo to wash off that smell. Afterwards, she returned to the hospital. Kathleen was being held overnight for observation.

Scott began getting Kathleen's room ready. After Janie and Kathleen's father passed away, Janie had their mother move in with her and Scott. At first, they had built a mother-in-law apartment on the back of the property for privacy. Later when Mrs. Winter needed to be looked after more closely, they added two rooms to the house. The first room created another master suite, and the second room was a large sunroom that would allow her to paint. It was set up with ventilation to keep the paint fumes from overpowering her or the rest of the house.

When Amanda moved into her new room in the house, Scott converted the now unused mother-in-law's apartment into a workshop. Kathleen would be staying in the extra master suite that Amanda once occupied.

Later in the afternoon, when Kathleen awoke, Janie pulled her into the shower to get her smelling better and also to perform her own examination. She washed her sister head to toe, and other than the few needle marks and piercings, she looked a little thin, but okay.

It was the first time either of them had seen the other naked in over twelve years, but Janie thought it was necessary.

That night, Janie slept on the hospital bed next to her sister, soothing and comforting her. She loved her and told Kathleen that frequently. Janie didn't ask Kathleen to try to explain her circumstance, she just held her sister tighter, grateful that Kathleen had been found.

The next morning, Janie brought Kathleen a decent breakfast, versus the hospital food, and once the doctor cleared her to leave, they began the journey to Atlanta. The STD test results would be available in a couple of days, though she would need to be retested for HIV in a few months.

Once on the road towards Atlanta, the two sisters let the quiet hang in the air for about thirty minutes until they were just past Murfreesboro, when Janie asked, "Kathleen, please tell me what's going on. I want to help."

A couple of minutes of silence later, Kathleen replied, "I don't think there is anything you can do to help. I started having hallucinations, like Mom, just about a year ago. Devastated doesn't begin to describe how I felt. Robert was an absolute ass, so I divorced him and moved to Nashville to escape. A month ago, while at work, I started hallucinating during a meeting. It was the most humiliation that I've ever felt.

"Once the hallucinations ended, I left the building and haven't been back. I started drinking to drown my misery and never really stopped, nor have I been particular regarding who helped to get me drunk or high. I mean, what's the point. My life is over."

"Don't say that. Scott and I are here for you. We'll help you find a new job and get you back on your feet."

Frustrated, Kathleen said, "Don't you understand? I can't work, because I cannot drive. If I were driving while a hallucination started, I could wreck and kill myself or someone else. If I can't drive, how will I work? Then, even if we solve the transportation issue, I still have to deal with the humiliation at work every time I hallucinate. Because of this...this...THING that I have, I can't do anything!"

"That is so NOT true. You are beautiful and talented, maybe even more so than Mom. We can get through this together. Let us help you."

"Oh, I'm sure that I'm just what Mr. Wonderful wants in his house. Another mouth to feed and clothe while trying to pay off that debt you told me about. I can barely boil water, and my cleaning skills stink. I'm beyond useless at home."

Janie asked, "I'm not sure the cause for the Mr. Wonderful comment, but even without me, he'd love you if for no other reason than because of your parents. Give us a chance, Sis."

Kathleen mumbled, "I guess I don't really have too much choice, other than killing myself."

Janie pulled over to the side of the interstate and slammed on the brakes. "Now you listen to me, little sis. There will be NO talk of suicide! Do you hear me? None! You are loved by us and your mother. You're the only one she consistently remembers, and she asks about you every time we visit her, which is every single week. So, you are going to live with us, and we are going to find you the best doctor in Atlanta, or in the United States, if necessary. We'll get you diagnosed and get you back to work as soon as we can. But you have to help us help you."

"Janie, those doctors never were able to help Mom. All those visits, all those prescriptions didn't make a damn difference. Did they?"

"Maybe not, but she had hallucinations all her life. You said yours started in the last year. How often do you get them?"

"About two or three times a month for about sixty to ninety seconds."

"When mom was your age, hers were ten to twenty times worse. So maybe whatever you have is much milder than hers. You can't give up without even trying. Do it for me, please. Soon, you are going to be the only blood family I have left. Dad's gone. We'll probably bury Mom within the year. I can't lose you too. Please."

It was an impassioned plea. Kathleen hadn't really thought about how her behavior impacted her sister. She didn't know that her mom was in such bad shape, either. The situation she found herself in had disturbed her so much that she wasn't really thinking at all. It did bother her that she had to endure this, and her corporate climbing sister and perfect husband seemed to have such easy lives by comparison.

"I don't want to be a burden."

"You won't be. Now that you are twenty-five, your share of the business earnings will be available to you at the end of this year. That probably isn't enough to live on, but it's a good start. In the meantime, while you are getting back on your feet, Scott and our housekeeper have gotten Mom's old room ready for you. Your niece and nephew will love having you around, and so will we. But more importantly, as soon as we can, we're taking you to see Mom."

Kathleen said, "You said she asks about me?"

"She does, but I don't know for how long she will. She doesn't know who I am a lot of times when I visit her, nor Scott."

The very name Scott was irritating for her to hear, but she kept her expressions and tongue in cheek since she was stuck living with him for a while, at least.

"Thank you, Janie. I appreciate your help. I'm being completely honest with you when I tell you I'm terrified about my future."

"We'll get you through this, together. That's what sisters do. You know that I love you with all my heart."

"I know. I haven't shown it for a long time, but I love you, too, Sis."

Kathleen squeezed her hand, and Janie eased back onto the interstate.

____________

Kathleen called her landlord, who was only a few days away from having her officially evicted and her things given to charity. Scott and Ramon arranged to drive up to get her things and her small SUV that weekend.

Kathleen was thankful for the room at their house but felt utterly useless.

They started with Amanda's psychiatrist, who was overbooked, to find someone that could take on Kathleen's case. They found a psychiatrist in north Atlanta who specialized in hallucinations and their causes, and they grabbed the first available appointment, which was six weeks out assuming no cancelations.

The results of Kathleen's STD test came back positive. She had Chlamydia. It appeared that it had been caught early, so if they could visit a doctor in the next day or so for her to get her shot, then no damage should have been done. She was mortified but knowing what all she had allowed, it could have been much worse.

Janie took Kathleen with her to visit her mother on Friday, like usual, and it was a very emotional reunion. Amanda was stunned when Kathleen walked in. They hadn't seen each other in over six months and cried for the first several minutes. Kathleen's being there must have triggered Amanda's memory because she was completely lucid and could remember nearly everything. She was so happy that Kathleen had come.

Janie used her phone to get a good picture of the three of them. They stayed much longer than a usual visit because they didn't know if she would ever be this good again. Everyone was in a good mood that weekend.

Janie and Scott talked, and the landscaping business hired Kathleen as a minimum wage employee so she could get on the company's medical benefits. When they discussed hiring Kathleen, Janie had a sheepish look, because while the business was doing well, they were still paying off a lot of debt. Hiring Kathleen would mean they would have to carry the debt a little longer. Scott shrugged his shoulders and just said, "family." Janie gave him a bone-crushing hug and rewarded him with a night of passion for loving her and Kathleen enough to do this. She knew how badly Scott wanted to eliminate their debt.

Kathleen called her old manager in Nashville, who was sorry to hear about her condition. He informed her that given her limited time with the company, she had been let go ten days after their not hearing from her. She understood.

_____________

That first weekend, Scott and Ramon retrieved Kathleen's SUV and belongings from Nashville and put what couldn't fit into their house or workshop into storage.

While she thanked Scott for the help, he didn't get the sense that she was very appreciative, at least not of him.

Janie loved having Kathleen in the house and so did the Parker children, Eva, who was two, and Noah, who was one. While Scott tried to warmly welcome his sister-in-law, she wasn't warming up to Scott.

After several weeks of this, Scott asked Janie if she would find out if something was wrong. She had noticed it too but tried to blame it on being in someone else's house and not feeling like she was contributing. Scott had noticed that the bruises on her arms and hickeys on her neck looked like they had healed.

Scott suggested that Kathleen start going with him into the office to help where she could and to try to keep busy. Janie agreed.

He didn't understand what had happened to Kathleen. She used to be playful with him when he was dating Janie, but once they became engaged, it was like her entire demeanor changed. He hated that too. While he was only truly attracted to Janie, even he had to admit that Kathleen was spectacular, even more so than her beautiful mother and attractive sister.

You would swear she was related to Rita Hayworth. She had gorgeous red hair that hung down below her shoulders. Her figure would make any Hollywood star envious with perfectly shaped C to D-cup breasts, a slim waist, and a nice tight butt topping long, shapely legs on a five-foot five-inch body. The new items which he couldn't help but see, though he didn't mention it to his wife, were her pierced nipples, which he had never noticed before. He only noticed them around his house when she wore t-shirts because at work her bras and tops provided enough fabric to keep them from being seen. He always knew Kathleen was a bit wild, but that surprised him.

He was legitimately afraid that if she were around when one of his guys was operating heavy equipment, she could cause the operator to have an accident. She could be that distracting.

He tried to be discreet, but one morning she caught him looking while sitting across from each other at the breakfast table. She fumed at him and disappeared. Later she returned wearing a bra under her t-shirt, and ever since then, he never saw them again.

He hoped the two of them could find some kind of common ground because Janie was very, very happy to have her sister living with them. He wanted her to be, but he worried about Kathleen causing friction in the household.

At the final block party for the summer, his neighbors gave him a very hard time about having two beautiful women in his house. Janie and Kathleen thought it was hilarious. After continuing to receive the cold shoulder from Kathleen, including at the block party, Scott was not amused. By the end of the evening, his neighbors had picked up on his irritation. Over the next week, as Janie talked to her neighbors like she usually did, that vibe was fed back to her.

When she asked Kathleen about it, she brushed it off like everyone was overreacting, but Janie knew better. She didn't press her sister very hard, because she wanted to keep her in her house, but she knew the status quo couldn't go on forever.

Everything nearly blew up one afternoon in the truck on their drive back home after work. Kathleen was deliberately antagonizing Scott by saying things about Janie's promiscuous past and suggesting inappropriate behavior while she had traveled for work. Janie had traveled a lot while consulting in her previous job.

Scott, a very patient man, came close to exploding on his sister-in-law in the truck. He didn't believe what she was saying, but he didn't want nor need any cracks in his marriage. If this were to continue, she would be out. No questions asked.

Once home, he asked Dina to stay until Janie arrived, and he isolated himself in the small workshop on the back of the property. When Janie found him, he was calmer but still fuming.

After hugging and kissing her husband, she asked, "What are you doing out here, Babe?" She had a pretty good idea.

"You need to talk to your sister, Janie. I'm serious. If she keeps this shit up, I'll throw her ass out. I can put up with a lot but trying to get between me and you is a deal-breaker. Those are grounds for eviction. If I didn't love you so much, and if I hadn't promised your dad that I would look after your family, I would have kicked her ass out of the truck on the way home."

She was surprised to hear his cursing, which was something he didn't normally do. "What did she do?"

He replied, "She started by suggesting that Blake, was cheating on Annabelle. I said, 'no way.' Then she told me if I couldn't spot it in my own wife then I probably wasn't fit to know if Blake was doing it or not. Then she began dragging up the names of guys you used to date, and the wild things you did in college, and that if I didn't know about that, then I probably didn't know about all the guys you screwed while you traveled for work."

Janie's jaw dropped open.

He continued, "I swear to God, Janie, I've never hit a woman in my life, but if she weren't your sister, I probably would have hit her for saying those things about you."

Mortified, she asked, "Did you say anything back to her?"

"No. Anything I might have said, would have blown things up even more, and I know she's still too fragile to be on her own."

Janie hugged her husband for being the bigger person. "Oh, thank you, thank you. I'm so sorry, Honey."

He said, "You need to fix this. I don't care what you say or how you get her to stop, but if that shit EVER happens again, she's gone -- immediately. It was hard enough being without you when you were gone so much. I don't need her, nor anyone, suggesting that something may have been going on back then."

She asked, "Honey, you don't think that I would ever cheat on you, do you? Because I won't and never have."

"Not before today. No. I still don't, but she was dragging things up from before we met, and it sounded like there was just enough truth to them to give me pause. No, I don't believe her. I believe you, but I shouldn't have to put up with that. I won't. We agreed that we didn't need to know about each other's sexual history prior to our becoming exclusive but having yours drug up by her isn't helping."

Janie said, "Believe me, Scott, I haven't even kissed another man since we started dating, and you will be the only man I kiss, or more, between now and when they put me in the ground. Yes, I was err..uh...active before you and I started dating, but I enjoy you and only you. Our life is too wonderful for me to screw it up by doing something stupid."

Scott started to say something, but she kissed him and then said, "I'll talk to her and find out what the hell is wrong. I promise you she won't do it again. You may not get an apology any time soon, but it won't happen again."

She hugged him tightly and said, "I love you, Scott Parker. I'm yours and you're mine. No matter what. Don't ever forget what we said, 'you and me, side-by-side, forever."

He kissed his wife on the forehead, and she pulled him down for another kiss on the lips, which had the desired effect of relaxing her husband.

She said, "I'm going to talk to her now. Stay out here until I call you for dinner, which shouldn't be too long. Okay?"

He agreed, and Janie went inside to fix her sister's attitude.

Scott could hear the yelling inside their house from his workshop. Several minutes later it stopped. He didn't hear anything break, nor did he see Kathleen storm out, so he hoped that Janie convinced Kathleen of how precarious her situation was at that moment. Janie was normally such a sweet and caring person, but if she's pushed too hard, she'll come out swinging. He guessed Kathleen got to see Janie laying down the law. He chuckled thinking about his wife yelling. He loved his wife.

She called him to dinner, but Kathleen didn't join them.

The next day a more contrite Kathleen joined him in the truck for their short drive to work. Not a word was spoken.

_____________

The first session with the psychiatrist created a lot of hope. He had heard of her mother's case and thought her symptoms very unusual. Since Janie had medical power of attorney for her mom, she had her mother's complete psychiatric and medical files. Kathleen's milder symptoms were encouraging relative to her mother's, and the doctor felt certain that they would be able to help her keep the symptoms from getting worse or even eliminate them completely.

The women were very encouraged.

Another appointment was scheduled several weeks out where he would perform a variety of tests, and then depending on their results, hopefully, prescribe some medication to help.
