As their voices rose in an eerie din, led by Father Andrescu, Hughes left the room. He had some important business to take care of, but instead he went to the downstairs bar and chugged two massive tankards of beer. He was afraid that the next time he heard "Ave Maria," he would be haunted by the strange, tortured voices again.
