Consequences Pt. 14A

As she lay making all the right sounds, her mixed-up inner feelings played havoc with her. After all, didn't Bree do this now and again, maybe more for all she knew; but no that didn't make it right, this would have to be the last time. Then it occurred to her that what was most wrong about this was hiding the truth. After all, wasn't that what her relationship with David was supposed to be based on? She was always berating him about being up front and letting people make their own decisions. Perhaps she should tell him the truth and maybe he'd let her keep Ron. Later at the plane, David introduced Kim to Honor early on and encouraged them to get to know each other saying he still had things to catch up on. He always did of course so it was just a choice of which to do first, he was aware that Jane was on his mind, and he wanted to do something special for her, then it came to him, they needed to go see the land on St. Lukes. He went forward to Honor and asked how long it would take to organize a flight to St. Lukes?

"Shouldn't take long, when we get back I'll organize it."

"OK great," he said then he went back and sent Jane a message saying, "How would you like some time away in St. Lukes, just you and me?"

David was at least partially right about Tania, she actually turned up at the airport, "What's happening?" he asked, as she came to the top of the steps and joined them in the main cabin.

"Something is up, we have another urgent extraction, may I borrow the plane for a day?"

"Of course, you can, I'll delay my plans for a day, keep me posted ehh?"

"Of course."

David noticed she didn't use an endearment and suspected that it was because Kim was behind him but who knew. "Hey, why don't you take Kim with you, where are you headed?"

"Kentucky."

"A decent distance, is John doing the extraction?"

"Yes, we are picking them up and relocating the woman back here, it will be good for the people at New York retreat to have someone to care for. I'll keep John with us if she needs someone she trusts; I think that's how it works."

"Yes, I think that's probably true, they don't know who to trust at first so it will depend on the first person who helps them escape, it will be interesting to see." He turned to Kim who looked even more bewildered, "How about it Kim? want to go on a daring rescue mission?"

Kim stammered, "I don't think I know what you're talking about."

He and Tania smiled at her, Tania taking her in for the first time raised an eyebrow, David noticed and looked at Kim again. He hadn't really paid much attention to how she looked but now he came to think about it, she looked a lot like Christina. Tania raised an eyebrow at him but acted like nothing had changed. "We will talk about it on the way," she said to Kim. "It's nothing for you to think about, just a plane journey to collect a woman who is joining our retreat, won't take long but will give us plenty of time to get to know each other."

They turned to go to Tania's car to collect some hastily packed travel things and at the bottom of the steps, she said "Thank you David that's very thoughtful of you and you say she has brains too?"

"Seems to have, I'll leave it to you to find out what other talents she has."

"I can see I will have a lot to make up to you for this missed opportunity and the favor."

"I'm counting on it," he said. "I was extremely jealous when I saw you with those guys at the party."

"And so you should be," she added. "But I think I'll be the lucky one, I am very jealous too, all those women you have to play with! And every one of them adores you."

"I wouldn't go that far."

"I am sure you wouldn't, it's not in your nature." She changed her mood instantly. "Let's get you back to Baltimore shall we" and with that they picked up her luggage and re-boarded.

Back in their seats, David said, "Kim, telephone someone and ask them to pack you a few things and bring them to the runway, in case you get held up on the trip." Then out of Tania's hearing he whispered, "Get them to pack something sexy, Tania is worth it, believe me." Kim colored impressively, uttering "but, but, but I 'm not...." So David quickly moved the subject on to give her time to recover her equilibrium and he made a start on describing what was happening. As he related the story of the last 'rescue' Kim became noticeably excited and that, he thought admiring the rosy cheeks she still had, would only add to the experience. They got take-off permission quickly and were landing at the Retreat in what seemed like no time as they discussed Kim's ambitions. Kim went off to get her things and David said to Tania "Everything you need is in the bedside cabinets just in case."

"Is it now?" growled Tania in a very un-Tania like way. David grinned and touched her intimately, "I'll come and carry you off when you get back."

"You're so thoughtful" she said, kissing him on the cheek and then he made his way down the steps.

"Have a great time," he said to Kim and as he passed he whispered. "Don't worry about anything, Tania is a very special woman."

'I'll bet she is' thought Kim wondering what she was getting herself into. 'Keep an open mind' she told herself, 'It's been a long time and I could do with some fun for a change.' David was also wondering what had brought on Tania's change, she had been so reserved in all their dealings and the only other difference he had seen was that live video of her and Christina with a couple of guys, he had put that down to drink. He didn't really think Tania was interested in him so couldn't help wondering what she was up to.

He waved them off with hope that they had a fun time but that the plane would be back in time for a getaway with Jane. He made his way into the main building on the lookout for her, not realizing how quickly he had returned, so he wondered what to do with himself. He decided to keep his head down and look online at hotels on St Lukes so headed to his office. He lost track of time so the next thing that happened was a car sweeping into their car park and he watched as Jane got out of the car, obviously in tears, and hurried to reach her room. He gave her time to settle then headed to her room, the door was closed so he tapped lightly but there was no response, he tried again a little louder.

"Who is it?" her voice said harshly.

"It's David, are you ok?"

There was a long groan inside followed by a sort of a resigned deep sigh and then, "I suppose you might as well come in."

He walked in to find her sitting in a chair leaning over the desk, obviously very upset.

"What's the matter, are you ill, has someone died?"

"No, No, nothing like that."

"So, what then or would you rather I leave?"

"Noooooooooooo," she let out in a long sigh. "I don't want to tell you; I've been lying to you."

"That man at the bar?"

"Yes him, I can't seem to give him up since the party, he calls and I come running except today, I was trying to tell him it was over."

"And it isn't? So, when were you going to tell me?"

She looked distraught, but for the first time to his knowledge, since his wife first committed adultery, he inexplicably lost it, turned around, and stamped out, his mind doing overtime. He had been starting to feel like he had his life worked out, or at least got Olivia out of his system and that he could trust Jane with his feelings. Now he felt like it had been thrown in his face, not but a few hours earlier, he had effectively handed Tania over to someone else; to be with Jane.

He went to his room, pulled out his cases and started pulling his things out and stuffed them in randomly. Eventually he ran out of bags and began wheeling them out to the runway. He had earlier booked a hotel on St. Lukes and that's where he was going if it was the last thing he did and he was going alone. He rang Honor but got no answer, so he guessed that they were on their way back on autopilot. He stopped wheeling, angry with himself, he wasn't thinking straight, he should have checked first, how long had they been gone so far? Was it 3 hours? Or even 2? they could still be on the way there. He pulled himself together, why not fly commercial, so he threw his bags in the car and went back to his office to ring the airport. Ten minutes later he threw his phone across the room in anger, no flights available for two days, the nearest flight would be from Newark. "Damn, Damn, Damn," he cursed and picked up his phone to ring Newark. It wasn't long before he was on the road for a late evening flight, and then common sense took over, he had to tell someone he would be away and why, but whom could he trust.

It came down to Lauren, she was his closest confidant after Jane. He pulled over at the next turn off and rang her, "Hi David," she immediately responded, "what's the matter?"

"How do you know there's something the matter?"

"Because you never call me at this time."

He sighed. "Am I that predictable?"

"Pretty much, for me anyway."

"I'm leaving for a while."

"So, you have found out then."

"I'm guessing you already know that Jane has been lying to me."

"I wouldn't be very good at my role if I didn't; I know pretty much who is doing what with whom except maybe for some one-night stands." She gave that a minute to sink in then. "May I ask where you are going?"

"Yes, the family place on St Lukes, at least to start with, then maybe some of the places in Central America."

"Be gone a while then?"

"Yes, No, I don't know."

"Want a shoulder to cry on?"

"Would you?"

"Yes I would David, why wouldn't I?" Although thinking, "For the only man I ever loved even if I am second best because I am a lesbian."

"I know you haven't been gone long, turn around and come and get me, I will be with the guard so as not to cause a commotion, you'll have to buy me some new clothes though."

"Thank you, tell Janine where we are going will you, just in case there's a hue and cry." He decided to shut up while he still could and turned the car around with a smile on his face.

A while later they were on the freeway heading north when David asked her "who else should I tell where we are?"

"If Ana's at home, maybe her, if not her then it must be Jo, I am not sure about Bree right now, she's been seeing a couple of guys." He looked at her slightly alarmed.

"Nothing too intense, I think just drinks as far as I can tell but I don't want her deciding that she ought to tell you as well. Do you agree? When we get there you can play with my assets for a while and if you're really good I might spoil you." He grinned at that, various salacious ideas running through his imagination.

She continued, "and then if you're really relaxed I'll tell you all you need to know. If you're not, we'll have to do it all over again won't we?"

"I don't know an awful lot about that one, ended it with her husband after she found out he was playing away; the word is she was devastated and has been celibate ever since. If she has any hormones in her body she'll be hungry for loving, so it could go either way, everything, or nothing."

"It's gossip but maybe I'll tell you later."
