"But I think she needs to get away, needs a shoulder to cry on and an opportunity to end the relationship. I would have told you to take her away first, if I weren't taking you away myself, but perhaps when you call her you could suggest she comes out when Mei does or at least not before."

"David!" Ana immediately said, answering on the first ring. "I am so pleased to hear from you, I just put the phone down to Jane, what's happening?"

"I'm heading to St Lukes right now with Lauren, her girlfriend is coming out in a few days" and he went on to describe what Mei did for a living. "So, I want you to prepare to come out in a few days too, once I have everything organized."

"But I can't just drop everything."

"Yes you can, I am here to listen when you arrive because I've been hearing some of what's happening with you, and I want you with me for a while."

There was silence at the other end, then, "How long have I got?"

"A few days, I want you here before I leave to put together some ideas and drawings but I'm not rushing, I don't know when I want to come back but next I plan to look at what is possible in Central America."

"What shall I tell Jane?"

"Anything you like."

"It's not like you David."

"I don't suppose I have a right to be, but I feel betrayed."

"I guessed as much when she told me, you're not taking me away to punish her are you?"

"Hadn't crossed my mind, I have better things to think about."

"I see, I suppose you know that Zoe and I have been arguing."

"What about Sophia and Elle?"

"If all goes well we will bring them out to Belize, Costa Rica, or Guatemala, can you talk to those who have been doing the search and ask them to make a list of the best targets for us. Tell Sophia and Elle that they will be needed if they can, we'll still do the trip we already planned but that can wait until Jane sorts herself out. For now, our priority is to create places of escape and to extend our members' options to something more exotic. We are creating holiday destinations for our people, so I would like something with a beach if possible."

"Phew, anything else?"

"Later on, we'll bring other people out for experience too so I want nominations from our senior people, we will bring the students out on the next adventure, maybe for just a couple of days to see you guys in action." The distraction meant that Ana was feeling less stressed, so she began to feel enthusiastic.

David added, "I want to involve Erika, but I am not sure about Janine, she's a dark horse and now we have Kim."

"Kim?"

"She's been in our system working but I've only just realized that she is a hot shot student, she is with Tania and Honor right now."

"I don't want to treat her differently to anyone else, it's just that I had put her on a bit of a pedestal. I wasn't surprised that she might want to fill the gaps in her sex life but lying to me long term just blew my mind. Did you know?"

Then Lauren thought for a moment, "I must admit I am baffled if I try to work out how her mind is working. I think she had decided to break up with him today and my guess is she gave in to him when he got upset."

"She did say something about that, but it was too late by then."

"What actually happened?" she asked, and he replayed the day to her.

Her face broke as he told her, Lauren found she couldn't help tears in her eyes as she realized the sadness of what he had planned and how it had been thrown in his face with interest.

"Does she know?" Lauren asked.

"I don't know and now it doesn't seem to matter."

She looked sad at that, "Would you mind if I talked to her?"

"Of course not, don't ever let me stop you doing what you do."

"OK."

They managed to cheer up a bit after that by talking about her girlfriends antics, such that they started making up new ones for her that became more and more extreme. A gleam in Lauren's eye suggested that she would be up for some of them.

He was awoken the next day in Jo style although not with the same expertise that Jo employed. "I promised Jo that I would look after you," she said in between licks.

"How does Jo know?"

"We talked while I was waiting for you and I've had a few messages too, we have always kept in touch. When this thing with Ruth breaks I'll be sure to be around to look after her."

"I can see how that might be."

The thing is that what she is playing at is temporary fun, not long-term commitment, right now she is probably up to no good because she doesn't have to tell you. My biggest fear is that she will make a big mistake, particularly as far as the baby is concerned."

"Will she try something like Olivia did? Trying to run off with the baby?"

"I don't think so, she knows that to have what she thinks she wants; she might have to give up being a mother. In reality it's a fact isn't it?"

"Yes, I don't want my baby brought up by another man, it's a big issue for Ruth too."

Lauren nodded sagely.

"So, she's what? Dating?"

"I think so, as yet I don't think she has decided and particularly doesn't know how she could tell you that she's sleeping regularly with someone else, but that just makes her want it more."

"I need a plan don't I?"

"I'm afraid so. Could be that she should try freedom and see what it really tastes like, but why should she have the right to do so? "So, there's more to talk about?" he continued.

"Is that what it is for Jane or is there more?" he asked.

"You will have to talk to her eventually, but we are talking about something longer term than the others." She decided.

"So why did Jane not make it regular or more?"

Their conversation begins on good terms, but he is not making progress as her mood is one of determination. He can't seem to convince her that marriage to him is a life that she wants, and his last gasp is to take her in his arms and kiss her thoroughly in a nice private area of the park. Jane knew this would be a big test for her, so she called on Ana and Jo in advance to be around for help, she didn't want a repeat of the last time. The two have been following trying to keep out of sight and now tucked away behind a growth nearby, watching and waiting for the moment when the couple stopped talking regardless of what happened next.
