Just ran across this classic. It is a few years old, but some newer writers could learn a thing ot two. While short and to the point, it develops the reader's sense of engagement with the main character. While you think you know what is happening, the author manages to up the ante and offer a bit of a surprise. Would be interesting to see if a creative sequel could be crafted.
"My husband had been fired and I didn't much like the idea of living in near poverty. "
So, basically this was about money and all her husband meant to her was a paycheck. Heaven forbid that the wife would go out and get a job and be responsible for carrying the load for a while.
