Best case scenario, Mac comes in, sees them fucking. He takes the cricket bat and hits Steve just as hard as he possibly can in the back of the head smashing his head down onto Jean's head effectively crushing both of their skulls. He then tells the police that he came in, saw her getting fucked and then both of them started belittling him and he just snapped for a minute, might have a good lawyer and a sympathetic grand jury and gets no billed. Or gets sent to trial for involuntary manslaughter and gets a jury that is sympathetic. I mean, with only one story in play he has a good chance of getting probation for a much lighter sentence. In any case the kids are still messed up but at least aren't being raised by a sociopathic slut and growing up with her values.

I am a great lover of reconciliation but just don't get this. Where is his passion, his anger at her, where is the feeling of betrayal, where is the grieving for a lost marriage? Did she even apologise or seem remotely remorseful. Steve filed assault and battery charges and in lieu of sending Mac to jail, he got visitation with Zachary and the restraining order removed since Mac no longer lived in their house. Mac paid alimony, child support and lost half his retirement. Mac was able to sue Steve for paying for Zachary's expenses to that point, but money was no problem for Steve. So Mac lost most everything, Jeanne found another man, not named Mac or Steve, to love her and moved on with her life and kids. Steve taught Zachary how to play baseball and he went to college on a full ride scholarship and never spoke to Mac again. The ending to a really lousy, poorly thought out story.

First lets define Jeanne: a 10+ year cheat with her husband's best friend who when caught replies to her husband "it was great sex", "I liked It", "Because I could" and most significantly "I don't want the divorce. But I won't stay and be abused either." This is from a wife who perpetrated the most vile abuse of her marriage and her husband for over a decade!! It seems to me that the author had the intent of depicting this person as an egocentric bitch who is ambivalent about the pain, humiliation, and betrayal that she has caused to both her husband "who she professes to love" and her lover whose second and apparently successful marriage she destroyed.

Her husband appears to have an overriding concern for his children and that is what drives his decision. I can accept that. What loving father would want to leave his children in the custody of such a woman? Rest assured that in a divorce she would get the kids, house and child support. He would be pained as a violent sociopath for the injuries he caused to her and her lover. He loses.

What's his leverage? Divorce for infidelity? Can he prove that the affair lasted 10 years? NO. All the kids are his. Even testimony from the lovers ex wife without evidence is useless. So how about a post nuptial agreement to include:

If I were Mac, after a limited time of no sex, I'd pretend we were reconciled and fuck her for about eight years. When Zach leaves for college, sit down with each child present the recorded evidence, explain that the only reason you stayed with her to protect them and that now you going to dump her. The anti brigade seem to never understand that it is fiction and the writer is structuring the whole scenario around his requirements and NOT the reader. Why the hell would you get arrested for whacking the man you "thought was raping your wife"? Easy peasy.

I told a friend recently "I've never really gotten over her infidelity." He said, "You never do." That's the way of it. You can put a relationship back together, but you always know she is capable of something you never suspected possible and it haunts you, off and on, for the rest of your relationship.

Although well over 10 years old this story still garners a substantial number of negative comments.

I have no way of knowing what the author intended but the written result was a cheating wife whose behavior was so outrageous that it defied any possible compassion by the reader.

In summary, she had a 10 year long affair with her husband's best friend with the possibility that one of her children was her lover's. She was fully aware that the affair destroyed her lover's marriage. The trysts took place in her marital bed while her husband was out of town on business. She would take time off from work so she could spend the day with her lover until the children returned from school. Often her lover who the children knew was their dad's best friend would greet the kids and play with them as though nothing happened.

But the coup de grace was her attitude when discovered. She had no remorse. She stated "she did it because she could", "she liked it", it was just great sex, and since her husband was happy with the marriage there was no harm done. "It was like I had two husbands". Lastly, while she didn't want a divorce "she wouldn't stay married and be abused". In other words she expected to have a say in the conditions of reconciliation.

She was presented as one of the most arrogant, self obsessed, unfeeling women encounter in LW stories.

The "Consequences" of the story was that her husband gave her a lecture, suggested counseling then took her back after sleeping in separate beds for 4 months. That's it?!!

I.like this story, but I like Beermaker's ending a little better. I don't think you recover from a wife's ten year affair with your best friend. Even if Zack is his child, that kind of betrayal would be terminal for a marriage. Still a good, actually, original ending.

My job still has me going on business trips. I used to go on them with a sense of reluctance because I missed being with Jeanne. Now, I look forward to the trips. I will disagree with the comments above, it was a nice ending considering that divorce is never a good option considering the children, though the cheating wife is let of with only some psychological punishment. Mac can in no way be called a wimp or cuckold considering how he handled the things. But I would have liked a little bit of physical punishment to make the end justified. My advice to Chagrined would be to not end the story in an epilogue so abruptly, it will be much better if after 4 months the reconciliation or uniting the twin bed maybe made like this: One day Jeanne comes from work and don't find the children, on enquiry Mac says he finally decided to unite the twin beds together. When she cries out and hugs him and kisses him he tells her to prepare for her final payback before getting over their separation. He asks her to lie down nude on the bed face down and wait for her punishment, she is ready for it but is shaking in fear guessing what the punishment is! Then Mac comes in and gives her a nice ass spanking before they resume their sex again! Maybe add to that Steve's ex is called home and Jeanne is to beg her forgiveness on her knees to destroy her marriage with Steve, and then Mac can have a one time sex with her in front of Jeanne to demonstrate to Jeanne how he felt before!

Enjoyed the story. The protagonist was almost British in his reserve. I thought he made rational, if painful, accommodation of the shitshow he was faced with. This may not have been cathartic in that regard for the intellectually challenged, but it was a well told tale.

Husband is just another Chump! At the very least there should have been a post nuptial agreement that if she cheats again she leaves the marriage with nothing. Wife did nothing to earn reconciliation and certainly nothing to earn forgiveness. Wife is just another entitled cunt who apparently believes fucking someone else besides her husband is acceptable as long as she doesn't love the other person. She cheated for years and she'll cheat again.

Good story. I would have enjoyed more exposition on the couple's eventual return to love making, and how he managed to get his head around a resumption of their sex lives after such a brutal betrayal.

I just gotta ask, is anyone else troubled by the remarks from the peanut gallery suggesting, for example, that the writer is a fag for not fulfilling the idiot commenter's blood lust? It is a story. It is a person's imagined scenario. For fuck's sake, the author could write that the protagonist screwed his buddy, Steve, and it still wouldn't mean the writer was suggesting his own sexuality, it is a story.

There are stories that frustrate readers, no doubt, but if so, try to explain why, don't just pull out a bat of mean spirited ugliness to try to hit the writer. Seeing such comments is like looking into the maw of the societal collective moron that eats the good in the world. You haven't made the writer any better, you've just opened a window to your own soul to show the worthless shit you are.

Still just no way to reconcile after an affair that long, especially with his best friend.

There should have been a final consequence for the wife IE: when the last child leaves the house, the husband packs all his stuff and moves on to a new life in some far away exotic place. The wife lives the rest of her life alone and miserable. Yeah right - as if that's ever going to happen.
