What you were describing were runs organised by Hash House Harriers. Designed to help mainly Brit ex-pats in the hot climate countries keep both fit and have fun with drinking games. Having a Hare, leaving trails to follow, compulsary drinks sometimes during the run and many drinks afterwards. Doing "downs" of alcohol. Great fun.

The HHH operates in at least 20-30 countries. I participated in Singapore and Vanuatu. Although not with your experience! Mine were just drunken hook-ups Ha!
