Click here"Best of the humans left," I replied. "Do you have working night-vision gear? Radios? Communications? Cameras? Helicopters? Hell, do you have a working armored vehicle?"
"It was all stored above-ground," he said sadly. "We've got two old Army trucks."
"The base had Marines in defensive positions, and they got wiped out," I said. "Going in with a platoon will result in losing a platoon. It's the wrong call."
The General didn't want to hear that. "What should I do? Send in an entire company?"
"No, sir." I looked at the Major. "Send the two of us in there. I'll keep him safe, and the Major can report that I'm telling the truth."
The General stood up. "Major? It's your call."
"It's a sneak-and-peek, sir. I'll have my men get us within a few miles, then Midshipmen Summers and I can go on a little hike together. She can brief me on the road."
General Payne nodded. "Let her out," he ordered.
I was returning to the base just days after breaking out of there. "Out of the frying pan, into the fire," I told myself.
Ch. 41
Seems strange that Cole & his Beta wolves did not prepare better for violence when the verdict was being read. Or even smarter just kick out all the wolves from the other packs when the Council insisted on punishing Cole. Cole's pack had the best fortified home and also the best supplies, so it would be hard for the other packs to come back and defeat them
Hi "Part-Wolf": Great story as always. But I've noticed that this story and the last one "Missing" have a much darker tone than all the earlier ones. More "Realpolitik" ? Perhaps you have been influenced by the wars and meaningless deaths of the last 2 years? I guess there won't be any fairy tale ending now that Cole is dead ?
I was angry with the character of Cole, but he shouldn't have been killed. He realized that he was wrong and that he wanted to be a better Alpha. Please, by some miracle, let him be still alive. By Luna grace!
Obviously, morality requires Cole to pay for his crimes, one way or another. It also disposes of the morally flawed hero.
CreepyDragon is right, even five pages isn’t enough when the writing is this good. I couldn’t believe they shot Cole, but then those in power will do almost anything to stay in power. Maybe this ranger will realize the benefits of accepting the change. Who knows? He might end up Angela’s next mate. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. Eagerly awaiting the next chapter!
I was casually interested in this story, the first of yours I've looked at. This posting made me REALLY interested. Well done. Cole's death was unexpected; so necessary for the story to be more than just another formula story.
I too was shocked at Cole's death, that possibility didn't occur to me. Now you have opened up a whole new world of opportunities. Great writing as always PW and keep the chapters coming. ELS
Interesting turn of events, and then another, and then another. You DO enjoy keeping us readers on our toes.
