Congratulations on a fine 5 star start to what looks like being another Pixie Classic. I love the characters of Fabienne and Annette, but am sure that readers are meant to. Looking forward to reading more of what I hope will be a nice long saga. Thank you xxxxx

...is it that some days like today, an abundance of first-rate stories by first-rate authors turn up at once? The trouble is that reading them cuts into my own work (gripe, gripe, whinge, whinge!). Right, having got today's moan-o'clock news off my chest, this looks like being another winner from our dear Pixie. Am I being fanciful or is Fabienne yet another incarnation of your many previous historical narrators? Keep it going, little one, your adoring public cries out for more.

I feel an epic novel coming on. Is this Pixie's answer to War and Peace? Move over, Tolstoy.

I'd love to read this in French, with the occasional phrase in Russian thrown in. Well, Leo's writing was the other way round, all Russian with the occasional French, but I have my linguistic limitations.

I am sure Pixie could manage though, since she is polyglot and multicultural. The only hint of Britishness is the delightful quote of love and twenty - although even the temporal pleasures are immortalized by great writing.

This opening chapter has hints of Pixie's great earlier works of historical fiction, from Carwen through Danegyth to Rahab. The author's spirituality, her love for the mystery of religion, also shines through. The emotional aspects of the story, as always with Pixie, don't feel fictional at all but very real.

I am awaiting the unfolding of events in eager anticipation.

It seems the lovely Fabienne has had her share of hardships. Thankfully, the wonderful Annette took her in and has helped her understand so much about herself, as well as showed her what love can be. I love Fabienne and her ability to survive and adapt. What a time for a young girl to be set adrift. To lose her family in such a tragic way, then to find a woman to take care of her while using what resources that were left to her. In a way she is blessed but also cursed as well. A great story my Lady Em. I am moved by this line you recited from a poet, "Come kiss me, sweet and twenty, youth's a stuff will not endure". Just beautiful words that quickly convey the love between these 2 lovely characters. Then later on, the laugh I get at your poked witty humor at us men being typical males, " He told me later that it had been the frills on the petticoat that had stopped him just riding us down.
