Amazing story. I'm writing this through my tears. Both characters were so real so the tragedy of their life and their ending hit home. Congrats Hooked.

This story was so sad, the unrequited love that should have been. Traci ruined Jason and they tried to act as a shadow in the rest of his life.

I cried more for Jason in this story that while he had a busy life, there was really no one there for him in the end. Traci took it away from him and never gave him permission to find it himself.

Great writing and a great story!

If one is lucky in their career or passion they have a defining moment - you have two in your writing. When One Door Closes and this one are a couple of my favorites on this site. Thank you Hooked for your gift to us the readers!

"She would become 18 or so for hours at a time, back to when her love for Jason was probably at its strongest"

Back when she thought Jason was a manchild and was already planning on getting some strange while away at college... such strength!

Saddest story I have read in a very long time. Maybe forever. But very well written, brought this old retired Army NONCOM to tears several times. Well done.

By the way, military members refer to each other by specific titles: Navy personnel or are Sailors, Marine’s are just that, marines, Air Force are addressed as Airmen, and US Army are “Soldiers”! Only army uses the title Soldier. And SEALS are SEALS. Period!,,

Jaffa38ukJaffa38ukabout 2 years ago

This story made me cry.

Beautifully written and very believable.

AnonymousAnonymousabout 2 years ago

Liked the story. The lack of understanding of the military, military ranks, and how members of the military address each other detracted from the story. Just a little research would have solved that problem.

AnonymousAnonymousabout 2 years ago

There were mixed feelings through this tale but to me the saddest part was the ridiculous nit picking about minor details. A story is to enjoy, not to dissect like a frog in biology. A very good story like 'When One Door Closes'.

AnonymousAnonymousabout 2 years ago

Good story. It’s a fact that some things just cannot be fixed once they’re broken. Jason was a perfect example. I think that’s why I liked the story so much. After Traci destroyed their relationship he made a conscious decision to never love her again and he lived with it. Forgave her but never loved her again. Perfect. I did have to laugh when the Seals were called “soldiers”. Nope, won’t work. Sailors maybe, Seals, yeah. Soldiers? No way.

:-)

AnonymousAnonymousabout 2 years ago

Excellent. It might be fiction but has too too many sad parallels in the real world.

what a foolish story

AnonymousAnonymousalmost 2 years ago

Honestly, I enjoyed it. But I guess for me, by the end of the story he came off looking more like the bad guy than she did.

She was dishonest when she was 20, shitty thing to do, perfectly justifiable to bail.

He used her for decades to have a family knowing she had feelings for him and it was probably torture.

Which one of those is worse?

What I hate about this type of story is the whole unrequited love bullshit. The premise that there's only one true person for you is so dumb though obviously less romantic than pining away for 60 years waiting for your one true love geezus give me a break!

I wanted a forevermore marriage to Tiffany, my childhood friend and love. However, I was wounded during Grenada and lost my leg. Out of the Army, out of the Rangers, and she divorced me while I was in Walter Reed. I was kept dumb the whole time. She was awarded everything, and I returned to no one to pick me up, and nothing to return to. I lived on several couches belonging to bikers who literally picked me up because I was in uniform. They helped me rebuild me life. She cost me my sons, both died, Afghanistan got one and Iraq got the other. I got her older sister Angel, and her five daughters.

AnonymousAnonymousover 1 year ago

When you are that young…..start of story…..one can only hope that each one can realize the impermanent nature of ‘love’…….actually at that age limmerance and lust are mixed in in large amounts with…..even if there is any real love at all. One has to take things far less seriously at age 18 or 20…….actually into the late 20’s one must not take matters of the heart with such great seriousness. Young people are all over the place and can’t really understand themself or their partner. A partner really can’t be fully responsible until they reach into their late 20’s. Parents need to explain these things early on. Youngsters will end upon kissing a lot of frogs early on……but need to go on and only really start focusing on a partner only when reaching about 25 or a bit more nowadays. Both sexes in todays world need to see what is out there but still act responsibly and not cheapen themselves in the process. Today young people need about 5-6 more years of seasoning before they pick a life partner. These two …..he was more old fashioned and was more mature earlier but his woman needed even more than 5-6 extra years to mature. Understanding all the elements of sex takes even longer and it takes a while before a youngster can realize all the elements that seem to elevate sex …..most are newness and the outside factors that flavor the experience rather than objective factors. One example….size? Some women swear by it yet lesbians wring fainting orgasms from their partners using only the pushing of one sex on another…..no 10 inch cock will do as well for them. The illicit nature of the affair vs sex on a weekday where both married partners must be up in 5 hours. Takes a lot of maturity to understand these factors and avoid throwing away and ruining lives and relationships. The homecoming queen seldom is able to live happily ever after with the star quarterback in real life…….but if they had waited 4-5 years after college they would have a chance to do so. R. H.

Loved the story. Really sad. Jason ranks make no sense. There is no second lieutenant in the navy. There is a lieutenant junior grade which an officer would reach in under 2 years and he would be pushed out if he was still that rank after 20 years.

good lord that was a difficult read... very touching emotional story of two sad and tragic lives shattered and paths diverted by cheating.

I gave it 5 stars but I didn't love it. I would have craved a happier life for them or an abbreviated BTB story so I didn't get so many "feels."

Story should have ended with Jason telling her he loved her at some point... say when they privately talked after her Alzheimer's prognosis was delivered, when he said he was going to take care of her in front of the kids or when they found the burial plots.

in real life, there'd be some healing of hearts over the weeks-months-years and growth in affection and love. I'll cling to that to get over the sadness of this story.

AA82ndAAAA82ndAA10 months ago

This story was great. Once again you have brought me, the reader into the heart and soul of the story. I love the way you tell a tale that solicits pure emotions on a visceral level Also, it was also ironic to read about a selfish lover who finally got back to teenage love: though somewhat unrequited. I often wonder what a story would read like where the self absorbed woman was given a glimpse of her future before she strayed? Not some time travel but instead an object lesson by experiencing vicariously, cheating ramifications and pitfalls somehow... Finally, although Jason seemed well adjusted, he also seems to be punished in not having a family of his own? TFS

I was very moved by this story. I was only in my early thirty's when my wife and mother of my three children had a major mental health crisis and our marriage broke down. If it wasn't for the children I might well have killed myself.

I have had other relationships, one of which lasted 40 years only ending when she died aged 85.

Much to my surprise 5 years later

DessertmanDessertman9 months ago

I didnt intend to post my unfinished comment.

5 years later much to my surprise I met a woman on a dating site and we quickly became very attracted to each other. It is now 3 years later and I am experiencing the most wonderful love mixed with sadness as i am 83 and will probably leave her within the next 10 years.

So I wept as i read the ending of your story.

I have just re-read this this beautiful bitter-sweet tale. I cried again.

However, as I said earlier sometimes we get an unexpected gift.

Best tragedy I’ve read on this platform in a long time. The guy’s response to the attachment injury he experienced was so layered it rang out with truth. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

fananamousfananamous7 months ago

The story was certainly great, evoking emotions intending from a good story teller. However, my deep involvement was shattered when the author revealed he knew so little about the US military. As the Navy / military is a binding thread in the story he should have at minimum done an internet search for Navy ranks and designations. There are no 2nd Lieutenants in the Navy. Entry level officers are called Ensigns. Seals are not soldiers, they are sailors regardless of duty assignment. If you don't know don't write about it. Story started as a 5, but like Jason's betrayal I could never reconcile authors very basic error. As a retired military person, it irks me when people prattle on about a life they don't know, and don't ask.

Ganymede69Ganymede697 months ago

Great read as usual but I wish Jason could’ve gotten over his pain and had children of his own. At least a son to carry on his legacy . 5 stars

This very poignant and sad story about what might have been, but never was, is easily a five star ⭐️ story. Hooked is one of few writers in the LW genre capable of evoking deep emotions! Thank you for this story!

BTW, Navy SEALS are sailors, not soldiers.

Usually I rate your stories higher, but...also a retired soldier so the mistake really grated on my nerve. Plus...skipped right over the EXTREMELY rare happenstance of how he came to be commissioned from the enlisted ranks.

How do you join the Navy, later become a Second Looie, when the Navy nomenclature is "Ensign", then a LCDR (seem to skip the steps in between, like LTJG, LT and such) then a CDR?

Odd.

Not sure how this is happily ever after.

Other than the ranks for Navy personnel, Jason should have had a full military honors funeral, as well. This is also a story that I read outlook to my wife - great time together.
