The woman left, there was nothing the husband did other than not burn her after her accident. He didn't (at least by the end of the story) live happily ever after, didn't ever get any satisfaction and held the cheater's hand and cried as she died despite her having killed their marriage. I don't see any reason to like this story-and don't.

She got off way to easy. When I read stories with death in it like this it kills me, its not that the cheater just gets away with it, but the person cheated on has a much harder path to walk back into life.

On the flip side, the husband was saved from there experience of a messy divorce. I'm sure she wouldn't want the divorce and would get her lawyer to insist on counseling to "Save" the marriage. I'm sure his kids, his parents and the in-laws as well would have been all over him to man-up and "forgive" her and take her back with the mantra "one little indiscretion" was no reason to throw away 22 years of a good marriage. Her death allowed him to avoid all that bullshit and he gets to keep the house and everything else. Better to be a widow than divorced.

I guess her dying in a car accident was good karma. Too bad he didn't get to tell her off before she died. Didn't really work to have her ghost him with positive words when she had decoded to end their marriage with her actions. The two things just don't fit.

What a sad but well written short story, what is with these wives who tell their husbands that it will be just this once and think they should be able to go out, cheat and think that the husband will just forgive and forget and go on like nothing has happened. Well, her dying in the accident saved Ron the issue of divorcing her but the pain she gave him was unforgivable. Just before she died with the tear in her eye it was apparent of her regret, as they say too little too late. 5/5

It's a cute story. But the cold hard reality is that IF there is some weird afterlife in this universe....she can give all the permission she wants. He's no longer going to value her input. She doesn't get to be in that role as care giver anymore. I understand in concepts like forgiveness, but with the way in which she cheated there truly is no path back to real reconciliation. Only neutrality. He needs to move on, without her. And I don't mean in a temporary sort of way, for eternity.

The wife you revealed wasn't worthy of trying to hold on to even after 20 years of marriage. The accident was a little bit of indulgence as a form of retribution but it was a good solution to a bad saturation.

I get torn on stories like this. Yes she got hers, as did the other guy. Yes it was well written, as are most of Saddletramp's stories. At the same time there's something immensely unsatisfying about it when the cheating spouse goes off and dies before the catharsis happens later in the story.

I liked it. As terrible as Kate's fate was, the outcome changed everything: she's out of the equation.

No months of anger, angst, bitterness, recriminations, hate, regret... all vanquished in a moment, where the betrayal was not even fully consummated.

He was given a gift, and I'm sure his recovery was a lot shorter than it would have been otherwise.

Well, if you're going to blow up your marriage, you may as well go the full distance, and she did it in spades.

Of only we were all as lucky as this husband, because, with the pain of down loss on different levels aside, he was very lucky.
