ignorance

Misquotes and spin do not make for good debate, but they apparently are a salve for your mind numbed ignorance. If this is your best thought, it would be an insult to fools to bestow the title on you. God bless.

And that's why....

"And it harm none, do as thou will" is a lot easier to follow.

this & that

Some of the arguments are silly and some make sense. But look what Leviticus doesn't say: a woman shall not lie with a woman as with a man. Even if you use that section as an argument against gay male sex, lesbian sex is absolutely not forbidden.

As the author points out, if we followed the bible literally, we'd all be either in jail for violating civil laws or executed for some infraction.

try again

Buy a dictionary, a good one and look up the definition for "sophistry". What you say will never be as important as how you say it.

America loves "Will & Grace"

Hypocricy.

"The prejudices that condemn incest, sodomy, and all sexual 'vagaries' have but one aim: to destroy the individual by imposing upon him a stupid conformism."

One Person's Opinion

It would seem that both sides of this issue certainly can quote the Bible very well. Congradulations to you all. My remarks, in the form questions, are this: If the moralists of this country want to lable someone as a deviant, why can't they? The so called deviants certainly have their lables for the moralists. We are so scared that allowing gay and lesbian marriages will ruin this country, but is that the real issue here? The Bible does indeed define marriage as the blesses union of man and woman. So why can't we come up with a solution that makes everyone happy? I have written several congressmen and senators with my idea of a "legal union" that allows the joining of anyone that does not fall into the conventional ideas of religious based marriage. If the union has the same exact benifits and foundation of marriage, why would it not work?

Now, my over-all comment is this...

I am tired of the so called fight for civil rights that this country has become obsessed with. We are almost at the point of dragging out the guns again because there are so harsh feelings. Why can't we simply say enough is enough and work to put the differences behind us? I do not care what color, origin or orientation a person is. I simply want to know that at the end of the day I can trust that person. Period.

I am white, male, 40ish and living the basic American dream. I have not used any form of racial slur since I "grew" up and figured that it was wrong, despite my southern up-bringing. I have never judged a person by their heritage or orientation. It simply doesn't matter to me enough to do that.

Please...we need to start with our children and teach them acceptance and tolerance by example, not words. It's the words that harm this country.

It's Well Written Luc...

and a good piece to point people to. I only wish it could actually work. I lost my trust in "the church" about the same time they told me all rock songs were written by the devil. I wish you could have seen the preacher's face when I stood up and quoted U2's "Forty" to him. He proceeded to attack it. I asked him why he thought the title was "Forty" and he said "Why don't you tell me?" in a condescending tone. When I asked the lady next to me for a bible and read Psalm 40 out loud to the group you could have heard a pin drop.

and then he said there would always be exceptions to any rule and went back to talking about Satan. I am afraid that this would have the same impact, but I still am glad you wrote it and I read it.

laws for people during the exodus

Don't forget these rules also included (1) women being sent to the edge of town when we had our period and (2) no eating of shellfish.

You are a moron.

Good thing there's someone here who actually knows something about the bible. There is one law against m/m anal sex in the Torah. Jews obey this law. If you are not a Jew, you do not have to follow it.

First: God doesn't hate Gay people, only m/m anal sex amoung Jews. A constitutional ban on Gay civil unions would frankly be unconstitutional. Gays shouldn't get to marry unless they have a Gay religion. If the religion doesn't allow it, don't expect it to change to meet your needs (yes, christianity does change alot , Judaism doesn't). Adam and eve isn't even a reason. That's just christians grasping at straws. But use their logic elsewhere, and you could determine that everyone should have incestous relationships (i.e. lot and his daughters).

Second, You bring up punishments, first, punishments were delt out in accordance with the decision of the courts. They would have to bring the case before 71 sages and they would come to a conclusion. There are many laws against sodemy today, and the chances of anyone turning you in are about the same (You're certainly not going to tell anyone if it's illegal are you?). Fuck, there's an oral law and a court system for a reason, because it's not the average person's place to decide what is right and wrong! Christians do this all the time and stone their kids. When was the last time a Jew stoned their kids for disobeying (only a severe physical attack constitutes disobeying) them?

Lastly, the rabbis determined that we have no right to force anyone to adhere to these laws (even Jews). If you don't like them, don't follow them.

In summary:

1. Jews follow these laws.

2. Jews know that these laws (the ones that were laws, your genesis quote is not one) apply only to Jews

3. Christians distort the bible to fit any view that pleases them, especially in their abusive enforcement of these laws.

welllll.....

real quick man, when christ returned the rules set down in leviticus no longer applied to christians, but only are adhered to by people of the jewish faith... so the leviticus law is not really even proposed by anyone who is remotely aware of biblical history or context (any right wing nut job politician should take note of this.)

however, in romans, it is commonly accepted that all those other things listed along with homosexuality are sins... not any greater of a sin than homosexuality, but still sins nonetheless... this would seem to indicate that homosexuality is a sin THOUGH ONLY AS IMPORTANT AS ALL THE REST. and since we dont deny the right of marriage to liars, why should we deny it to homosexuals?

Get the facts straight darling!

There are so many mistakes in this and incorrect use of the Bible and the Torah I am not quite sure where to begin. One thing that is certainly clear is that you studied neither Theology or English at university, your facts are wrong and your grammar is terrible. You randomly quote passages from the Bibl, taking them out of context, making it painfully obvious that you either haven't bothered to research what you write or that you do not understand it. I could go on but I haven't the time, I will pint out the mistake that really stood out to me; you wrote: "Also red meat is out, “Do not eat any meat with the blood in it” (Lev. 19.26)," if you actually understood this you would know that this does not mean that one cannot eat red meat it means that one cannot eat meat that still has blood in it. For this reason kosher meat has to eb packed with salt and drained of all the blood in it before it can be stamped with a chesher and pronounced fot for consumption. I am not homophobic, nor do I dislike homosexuals in anyway I just dislike people being incorrect about facts and twisting other people's words.

laughable

ki am no bible stdent but i have read enough, heard enough and lived long enough to know you have not made one single point, the onkly argument for gay marriage, not that espouse ity, is common sense. its got its foot in the door, it is inevitable. also, quoting the bible for such a serious matter is ridiculous, you want to base our lives on a book of well pfromoted, ghugh selling sciene fiction?

AnonymousAnonymousover 17 years ago
No starting point

We need intelligent discussions of homosexuality and religious principles, and the intersection of religious morality and the law, but this is no starting point. "Straw Man" arguments have no place in intelligent discourse, and I sense this is one. This kind of scriptural analysis wouldn't get a passing grade in a introductory college level class.
