While it seems fitting that a would be assassin would be killed. We even have movies n shows where assassin get killed brutally. Only difference is that this story is partially from the pov of the assassin who was apparently manipulated by the one who killed his father and his own murderer's father.

Plot hole #1: rather why not simply have the original murderer play the hero - n have him killed

Plot hole #2 why not tell the hero to disappear n change his name n have the Handmaden play the hero.... Even the spell is unnecessary
