"Forget that, what're you wearing?" Yoli's thin frame was draped in what looked like an oversized off the shoulder beige sweater the stopped just below her crotch leaving her long legs exposed.

"My clothes, what's it to you?"

"No, WHAT-ARE THOSE?!!" I pointed at the winged wedge heels on her feet. The odd looking white Adidas gave her a height advantage by a few inches as Yoli cupped a hand over her mouth chuckling.

"You don't like my shoes?"

"Somehow, they're all you girlfriend." Yoli leaned in squeezing my bicep getting close to my ear.

"Know what's under this dress?" She whispered into my ear.

"Nothing."

"How'd you know?" We both laughed and jostled a bit, horse playing on the sidewalk. I leaned up against a corner streetlight checking her out for a few seconds glad for the distraction. Her hair was blown out like some crazy lion's mane as she stared back pulling on a strand.

"So, what're you doing, like serious?" She asked again trying to sound coy.

"I came down here to get some snacks but ran into Jim Crow."

"HUH?!!"

"Antonio, Mintzy's kid; he was out here trying to get a hate crime going. Don't worry, I handled it. What about you?"

"Smokes; wanna get a bite, my treat?" Yoli flashed a pack, playful and bouncy like some excited kid. She grabbed one of my hands tugging on it, but I didn't budge.

"Maybe some other time, I've got people waiting."

"You don't know what you're missing, the deli's right over there, best pastrami in the city. Come on, buy me lunch." Yoli sidled into my body pressing close. My hand was inadvertently touching her crotch. She wasn't lying about the lack of underwear.

"Oh now I get it, you stand out here bumming for lunch on your downtime." Yoli giggled yanking on my arm until I capitulated hitting the short crosswalk. She redoubled her grip on me walking with a lanky drunken gait.

The deli of note was a corner shop owned by a guy I'd met briefly the first time I'd ever visited Yoli's place. Sal Abelman was the guy who'd let me into the apartment building to leave a card under Yoli's door. The place was tight with room for three tables inside while two umbrella tables offered outside dining.

I was ushered into one of the tables close to the counter while she ordered a footlong pastrami sandwich for us to share. I found myself staring at the subtle curve of her butt as she gleefully conversed with Mr. Abelman.

"Oh, I see Yoli managed to catch you again, young man!!" He mused while ringing up our meal causing Yoli to half turn in my direction waving his comment away dismissively.

"Is that right; what else did she tell you sir?"

"Well, if you REALLY wanna know..." Yoli clapped her hands over my ears suddenly in my lap pressing her torso into my face. There were a couple of old guys there laughing it up as I playfully swiped her to the side. Yoli settled for sitting on my knee instead.

"DON'T LISTEN TO THIS GUY!!" Yoli blurted out earning more laughs. The rampant humor of the situation was welcome after an afternoon of drama centered around my cousin. This brought triggering thoughts of Yoli's hookup with the man in question.

"What happened?" She noticed.

"Eh, nothing." Yoli brushed a few fingers across my cheek, then captured my hand kissing the top of it. My own hand was resting on the upper swell of her floppy butt. She smiled as I wagged my knee, sitting there like she was talking to Santa.

"Hey, I know it's too soon, but you never have to promise me anything. Can we just have lunch, then?"

I was still thinking of her getting smashed by my cousin but nodded anyway. Yoli picked up a half of the pastrami sandwich feeding it to me, then taking a bite from it herself. Mr. Abelman looked as if it were the cutest thing he'd seen in a while.

"I want an invite to the wedding you guys." He commented as Yoli gave me a sip of her soda.

"Shut up, you gonna make him run away." More laughter from the old guys hanging out there. I noticed they were playing chess.

"What've you been telling these guys, Yoli?"

"Nothing, but I need somebody to talk to when you don't call."

"No girlfriends?" Her nose prickled at the suggestion.

"I got fired, so no."

"Sorry about bringing that up." I apologized.

"I'll accept if you give me a kiss." I didn't reply one way or the other, but that didn't stop her from stealing a peck on the lips in front of an audience. I glanced at Mr. Abelman's counter remembering myself.

"Oh, excuse me sir; can you make me another pastrami sandwich?"

"Of course, this is my function young man; what kind of bread would you like?"

"Hold that thought, let me ask her." Yoli stopped snacking mid-bite staring pointedly at me.

"Ask who?" I realized my mistake too late as her brow wrinkled.

"Uhm, Rashida; she's back there and I thought she might be hungry." Yoli lowered the sandwich between her thighs silently processing my answer.

"Why're you buying her food, huh? She got money and I don't got no job. As a matter of fact she's happy I got fired and shit; I know that fat cow. Wait, were you hanging out with her before I saw you across the street? What were you two doing, huh? Were you fucking that bitch?" Her face flushed crimson from one cheek across her nose to the other as she ranted.

"Yoli, I just wanted to buy her a sandwich."

"That is not what I asked you!"

Mr. Abelman looked like a deer caught in the headlights while the old guys in the corner stopped playing chess to see what would happen next. I was caught on the spot as Yoli ripped into me like we were dating.

"Aren't you sexually fluid?" I was trying to be coy and retain a shred of dignity, but instantly regretted it as her face began to twist up like she were about to ugly cry.

"Yeah, I am; sorry." She put the sandwich down grabbing her lighter and cigarettes. Everybody watched her stand up snatch open the door and stalk off.

"YOLI!!" I ran out after her as she stormed down the street towards her place, head low, arms folded across her chest. It looked like she was experiencing the coldest day in her life.

"DON'T FOLLOW ME; PLEASE!!" She broke into a light run, arms still folded tight across her chest. I watched her for a minute until she reached her building half a block down. I was wholly confused and embarrassed resolving to get some answers one way or another as I walked back to the deli.

"So that's a no, on the sandwich?" Mr. Abelman asked while his friends went back to their game of chess.

**********************************************************************************************************

My head was still filled with white noise from an assortment of drama throughout the day and I still hadn't seen Renee Kelly yet. I purchased a bag of food from the deli and received a wealth of unsolicited advice from Mr. Abelman and his associates. The general consensus among my elders was that I should've lied about Rashida even though I reiterated we weren't dating.

I managed to retrieve five twenties from a portable ATM at an adjacent business with the intention of paying my debt to esteemed baby mama number two. I felt like an utter fool now that I'd found out what really happened between Jaquan and Rashida. It shouldn't have fazed me knowing his proclivity for multiple women, but he'd apparently stalked and hunted her down that night.

Both of them were complicit in their own way about hooking up. I surmised both were three sheets to the wind, too hot and bothered to make it to his bedroom ending up on the living room floor. Their betrayal and its price would be devastating. I didn't want to find out, but now I was caught in the middle. One of the details that played continually in my head was her admission that he'd shoved her in an uber after he was done using her body.

It was negligible whether Renee would remain wholly indifferent to him after this had come to light. I was sure she didn't appreciate being backdoored into a polygamous situation with Jaquan. Obviously, he'd confessed, it was a given that she'd talked to Rashida about things before coercing both of them into a reenactment on camera.

"Hey, bought food!" I called out as I entered the back door, kitchen adjacent.

"Not hungry, I gotta check on something downstairs." She appeared walking out of the living room with purpose towards the door.

"You wanna take something with you?" Rashida stopped at the edge of the table but didn't regard me facing the open door.

"You got enough stuff on camera, right?"

"Yeah."

"Good, I think I'm gonna chill out for a minute; call me when you need some more stuff." She replied stoically.

"Hey, you wanna talk about it?" I offered even though I'd had enough of drama.

"Been there, done that."

She walked out without looking me in the face as I sat the bag of food down. I went to the living room finding Renee sitting in one of the fold out chairs waiting. Her unexpected appearance made me flinch before I noticed she was sitting there zoned out. I was reminded of the night she'd learned of Jaquan's hookup with Yoli.

"Renee?"

There was an object in her lap, a single high heeled shoe.

This confirmed the betrayal of two people who'd probably never be close to her again. Rashida Sikes aka Chi Town Thunda had been outed having a pedigree from the streets. She'd mentioned losing and leaving a shoe behind during their drunken entanglement.

I cautiously took a seat beside Renee still looking at the shoe in her hands. Confronted with this infidelity so foul, Renee had undoubtedly gone to my cousin's home and retrieved the evidence for herself. There was nothing I could say to make her feel any better, so I took the shoe placing it on the other side of my opposite leg.

"Here, this is for our bet." I fished out the hundred bucks, offering it to her.

"Hold on to it for me." She spoke devoid of emotion as we stared across the room. Both of us knew she'd only made the bet because she knew I was angry with her.

"So, what do you want to do?"

"About what?"

"All of this, the shoot and the website you wanted me to build?"

"Nothing's changed."

"Are you sure?"

"Didn't you say that you'd never question me again?" I nodded instead of answering outright.

Renee suddenly leaned over me snatching up the shoe. I watched her slanted green eyes glare at it like some monkey's paw before she planted it in the middle of that tufted ottoman. I followed suite picking up a camera taking a few still shots of it to close out the shoot.

"I'm gonna hang out and finish up the site tonight; what're you gonna do?"

"Have dinner with Jaquan and my little Daisy; if you'd already earned it, I'd be coming back down here in the middle of the night. I'll have him bring you a plate." It felt like there was a stone in the pit of my stomach as she slung her purse leaving me alone in the living room.

I was reminded of Yoli in that instant.

Honestly, I was glad to see her go.

I glanced around at the empty apartment still feeling the drama that occurred lingering. So I started cleaning up the place to the best of my ability while intermittently checking online activity between some of the social media platforms where I'd set up accounts for Shawnee. I'd posted Rashida's teaser earlier and it was lit on fire with steadily rising activity.

One of Shawnee's mall scenes was blowing up making me glad I was sitting on the other. She had to making some serious coin even with the site deductions. Halfway through cleaning and pulling laundry from the bed, I started making new material from the recent shoot when a handyman knocked at the door with the delivery of a vintage looking fridge. I'd left an impression on Mintzy.

Yoli started texting me later in the day with various emoji's that communicated some regret for her behavior at the deli. I half considered taking the food I'd bought over to her place but didn't want the drama. When I didn't answer her overtures, my phone started ringing. I put it on mute next to the laptop continuing to work on the site which was a whole lot easier after Renee's contact did the heavy lifting. The phone kept ringing on mute with the flashing light finally prompting me to answer.

"I don't think we should be talking right now."

"I-uh, I agree with you one hundred percent, I really do and I'm sorry for showing out at Mr. Abelman's. I hope you can accept my apology for that; if you want, I'll go down there and apologize for making a scene. Just tell me you aren't gonna shut me out because I can't stand it."

"You don't have to do that; it's okay Yoli."

"No, I embarrassed you and I had no right. Just say that we can still hangout sometimes because that's what I really want okay? Don't throw me in the garbage, I can be good."

"Stop saying that shit. You need to come up off some information and tell me what's up with you and Rashida?" There was a pause on her end of the line long enough to make me think she'd hung up.

"WHY'RE YOU ASKING ME ABOUT HER?!! YOU KEEP TALKING ABOUT THAT BITCH, AND I AIN'T GOT NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT THAT FUCKING SHIT!! DO YOU ASK HER ABOUT ME WHEN YOU'RE FUCKING THAT FAT ASS OF HERS, HUH?!! YOU JUST LIKE HER CAUSE SHE GOT A BIG, BLACK ASS!! YOU KEEP BRINGING HER UP!! YOU IN LOVE?!!"

"Have a nice day Yoli." I hung up in her face.

My phone started ringing off the hook incessantly, so I turned it off as Jaquan knocked at the backdoor. I facepalmed at his timing sliding back in the chair rising to open the door. He had a plate of food and a few sodas immediately noticing the fridge and bag of food already on the table. I motioned for him to come inside. He still had this humbled expression on his face.

"Hey man, I don't wanna talk about any of your shit today, but if you're so inclined, I'd like some advice from the old you."

"What's bothering you?" We both sat at the table. He'd bought a porkchop, veggies rounded out with mac and cheese. There was an individual piece of cheesecake wrapped in plastic wrap similar to the plate. I turned on my phone finding that it was still ringing off the hook.

"Oh, who's that blowing up your phone?"

"Yoli."

"You guys going out or something?"

"No, we were doing FWB; but I thinks she's trying to backdoor a relationship on me."

"You tell her you love her?"

"Fuck no."

"She tell you; she love you?"

"Nope."

"Then don't do shit; you're doing the right thing." He opened the bag plucking out a puffy, homemade oatmeal raisin cookie. It was fair trade since he bought me a dessert. I probed his casual advice further as the phone continued blowing up.

"What do you mean?"

"Cuz, women thrive on attention especially after you've fucked them. See that's the allure that keeps you coming back up until you clapping the cheeks and once that's done, females start panicking. They start crowding you and invading your personal space like a crackhead, so you don't do shit."

"Why?"

"Because that puts the direction of the relationship in their hands."

"Why would I want something like that Jaquan?"

"Because she will have to put up with the shit or come at you hard; either way you end up running the show. She acts crazy, you cut ties because of it with a clean slate, or she deals knowing she's looking the other way until she can't anymore."

"So, what about Renee?"

"That doesn't apply because she's different."

"But you did the same thing to her."

"You got it all wrong man; I didn't cheat on her because I'm a dog. I didn't cheat on her to make her decide to be in my stable, cuz. She's different, a real life princess and I was always intimidated by her even when she was a virgin. Renee is the kind of woman that you can't stop looking at like the sun. You thirst just to get a look, and then it burns you up because you know you don't qualify. I never felt like her equal; fuck, I cried when we were doing it and that's why I kept cheating. I felt comfortable with women I saw on my own level. Sometimes, I wish I'd never been with her."

"Why Jaquan?"

"Because I messed her up; ruined her for the real person she deserved. I'm guilty of that and we both know it. It hurts so bad even when I look at my little girl who's the spitting image of her except for wearing a miniature version of my nose. Renee's a queen and she gave me a princess that I love more than my life. Right now, I'm just trying to get all of the good memories I can before it comes crashing down."

"Fuck Jaquan; why'd you lie about Rashida?"

"I just lied to you, but I told Renee everything. Truth be told, I wasn't looking for anything that night, it wasn't premeditated. Rashida just turned up and I started feeling a certain way because I felt like she was on my level. I was always looking at her ass, but I wasn't planning anything. We were just having drinks and it got out of hand when we started touching."

"Why'd you do it?"

"I was sitting in my car worried about her telling on me; then I just happened to see her getting put out of that uber. She was sitting in this bus shelter, obviously stinking drunk and she just leaned over like she was gonna sleep there, so I picked her up. I took her to my house and fucked her on the living room floor. We fucked each other because she was trying to get over Harold, me because I felt like she was just a regular person like me. We just didn't talk about it afterwards." I pondered his words.

"Jaquan, I don't think this is gonna turn out well; what are you gonna do when it blows up in your face?"

"I don't know; I just wanna get all the good memories I can, even if it means bending the knee to Renee. I'm okay with that because we both know she deserves better. Guess I'll take my punishment like a man when that happens." He sounded honest.

"Sorry mom asked you to babysit me?"

"Hell no, feels like we really got to know one another, bruh. You surprised me man, didn't know you were such a player. Feels kind of like you're my little brother from another mother." Neither one of us said anything after that as my phone suddenly started blowing up still on mute.

"Yoli again."

"She's easy, the crazy ones always are. Tell you what cuz, let's go downstairs and you'll see what I'm talking about."

I didn't know what he was talking about, but we left the apartment walking downstairs taking the alley around the side of the building. I didn't know what to expect until we were standing at the end of the alley facing the opposite side of the street.

"Oh."

Yoli was standing there in front of her building looking directly at both of us. She was just inside the front gate both hands holding the bars like she was jailed. I glanced over at Jaquan who gave me a pat on the back.

"Go talk to her; do what you want man." He turned trudging off to the back of the building.

"Hey man?"

"Yeah?"

"Are you sorry for knocking me out that time?"

"Nope."

With that, Jaquan disappeared around the side of the building as I turned about finding her gaze burning into me. I could see the phone in her hand still flashing from calls I obviously wasn't expected to answer. She seemed intent on calling until I picked up. I steeled myself walking across the street noticing that her head followed me until I was within five feet of her. Her face was a mess of running mascara and tear glistened cheeks.

"I'm working on my crazy." She said flatly, sniffling a bit.

"Yoli, I've been with seven women including yourself, and Rashida. We hooked up after you fucked my cousin, and a couple of times for that website business. You know I've been with other women; what's up with Rashida? What makes her different than the rest?"

"I feel like god's punishing me."

"What does that mean; what's going on with you two?"

"Eh, she treated me like crap all the time, always blabbing that sister girl bullshit and threatening me. I loved Renee and she was always in the way. She liked calling me out in the salon, telling everyone I was a fucking lesbian. I didn't care about what people said or thought, but Renee started getting weird on me. I felt like a freak, and honestly, that bitch was right about me. I could barely stop thinking about all the ways I'd turn Renee out given half the chance. One day I get a little back embarrassing her about her cam shit, and she was gonna beat my ass in front of that salon."
