Indeed, Janet, Lisa, and Mona are due for a visit, and that's gonna be no end of fun, especially since they don't know Alexa's returned. They haven't seen her since she was a baby, after all.
There's plenty to explore in Blackwell Manor. It was built in the early 1900's, during the Edwardian era, and it cost a lot of money back then. If you're looking for a comparison, think of other large estates built in the period, such as The Elms, the Rockerfellers' Kykuit in New York or other properties owned by various robber barons. While many of the Blackwell estates and homes are impressive, this one is the flagship of the family, and the center of the Empire.
So it makes the rest of the family bugshit nuts that Karen isn't terribly interested in it for the power trip.
Expect a lot of in-depth delving into the history of the enigmatic and tyrannical Blackwell family for the next bit, as Alexa gets to know her new home, one she'd been told about her entire life, but is only just getting to really understand now. Alex is half DeBourne, and unflappable like his father, so the place doesn't have nearly the effect on him that it will on her. That, and he's visited it plenty of times while he was younger.
You'll also start to meet the Gordon side of the family that Karen carries her surname from, and they're a treat since they're unlike the Blackwells, and perhaps a little more DeBourne'ish. A little. They're still a business empire and family, just not so rigid as their Blackwell in-laws.
Yes, they sold a cute little cottage to Jordan for a dollar. I'm not kidding, think of the cottages in Thomas Kinkaid paintings, and you'll see what I'm going for. Mike and Karen are seeing to it that he lives the most perfect life while he graces them with his presence.
The upcoming flashback in Mike & Karen 19 will parallel Freja & Jeanie 3 in theme, so they'll be published side by side. Keep an eye out for that.

FoggyKernelalmost 4 years agoYeah! More spin-offs! Also, thanks for backing up to when they both started their college experiences. It threw me until I finally realized that Mike was not at Toronto but Sudbury (it takes my feeble mind a bit to catch on). And I do recall how room assignments were tight when I first went to college. I was (lucky) to be part of the overflow that got assigned to one of the upperclassmen dorms and having some rowdy juniors and seniors mentor me and my buddies (homecoming weekend was a four-day non-stop party). Looking forward to finding out why Mike went to Sudbury first (since they don't seem to have the hard sciences) before going to Toronto.
And also thanks for showing how Karen and Lisa first met (after showing us how the parted in the previous chapter). Karen does seem to have a way to draw remarkable people into her orbit.

MunsonManabout 4 years agoYou matched the 17 chapters in 'Alex & Alexa' and I hope there's a lot more to come. Is our current pandemic situation going to be part of the story or not? It would pretty much kill the college scene until the fall semester. That is a very interesting group of domestic servants you've put together-- especially Valentina Prospero (nice name!). I can't wait for her to become Mike & Karen's personal chamber-maid. Great work!
