"Dr. Golden working late?" Jake asked.

"It's New Years so it's all hands on deck in the emergency room," Jessica's dad answered. "I am glad that you two are staying the night at Staci's so you aren't on the road after midnight."

"Are you saying that we should stay out more often, Dad?" Jessica asked teasingly as she and Sarah joined them.

"Jake's," She answered quickly. "We are definitely taking Jake's car tonight."

"I think that we're taking my car," Jake remarked with a chuckle.

"You were able to decipher that even with the subtlety eh, Jake," Mr. Golden smiled.

"Everybody is just so funny," Jessica commented as she took Jake by his arm and pulled him toward the door. "We're leaving, daddy. Don't keep Sarah up too late."

"Like I have choice in that matter, dear," He answered. "Be safe."

"We're always safe," Jessica smiled then faltered at the door.

She let go of Jake, went to her father and gave him a hug.

"Love you, daddy," She said then hurried back over to where Jake waited for her.

Jessica had her cell phone out as Jake started his car and pulled out of her driveway.

"Staci wanting to know where we are?" He asked.

"Nope," She answered. "I'm telling her to not expect us until the party starts."

"But we're going to be there way before that," Jake stated.

"We are making a stop first, Jake," Jessica told him. "Since you were so good earlier I plan to give you a surprise a little early so we need to go to the old drive in."

Jake nodded, started his car and pulled back onto the dirt road that led them back to the main road.

"What was that about?" Jake asked as he pulled onto the main road.

"What the hell?" Jake asked as he tried to check his rear view mirror but all he couldn't see anything but the bright lights of the car that was just off his bumper.

Jake started to press his accelerator down but noticed that they were about to take a sharp curve so he let off and steered into the curve. He had intended to get to the apex of the curve then accelerate out to give them some room from the maniac behind them. At least that was what he hoped to do. That hope was dashed when he felt a slight bump from behind. A bump that turned into a shove. Jake felt the rear end of his Mustang as it started to slide just as he felt Jessica's nails bite into his leg as she gripped him tight out of fear. He steered into what he thought was going to be a slide and for a second he thought that he might be able to save them. He didn't count on the small pothole that wouldn't, under normal circumstances, be a problem but when the car behind gave them another bump it turned the rear tire of the Mustang so that it clipped the hole side on. The tire took a slight dip into the hole then was grabbed by the lip. Momentum lifted the passenger side of the car up into the air and it started to roll.

"Jess!" Jake managed to shout before his side of the car slammed into the pavement.

Metal shrieked as the Mustang rolled over and over. The teens were slammed around inside it but they were ominously silent as the car careened into the thick woods off the road. The rear of the Mustang clipped a tree which stopped it on it's third roll but it snapped the car around violently before gravity slammed it upright back to earth. The sound of tortured metal that had just ripped through the cold night night gave way to a near eerie silence save for a hiss from the dying engine and a steady plink from the turn signal that had turned on during the crash. The yellow light from it was like a dying beacon in the dark winter night.
