Click hereDr. Golden arrived via the elevator in time to see the embrace as she hurried over to them.
"Has there been any news on Jake?" She asked.
"Nothing since you last checked," Mrs. Gibson said. "How is Jessica?"
"She's finally sleeping I think," She answered. "Tim and Sarah are with her and so is Staci. She's refusing to leave Jessica's side so she's there with Tracy as well. I wanted to come and check on Jake."
"We haven't heard anything more," Mr. Gibson reiterated. "Can you go back and..."
Before he could finish his sentence the door to the waiting area opened and Dr. Linville along with Dr. Yang stepped out. They walked over to the group as Shelly stood to join them.
Dr. Golden quickly introduced them to the Gibson's then Dr. Linville started to speak.
"Your son is in a stable but critical condition," She began.
"What does that mean?" Mr. Gibson asked and looked to Dr. Golden for an answer.
"His vitals are stable but he's still in bad shape," She explained.
"He has a few broken ribs," Dr. Linville said. "One of which did some internal damage. Now thankfully none of his organs were punctured but it did sever a few blood vessels. We had to give him quite a bit of blood during surgery. The good news is that we found all the leaks and fixed them."
"And what's the bad news?" Mr. Gibson asked.
"The bad news is his brain," Dr. Yang stepped in. "His brain was swelling when he came in but we managed to halt it with a mixture of drugs. Dr. Golden can tell you more if you'd like to know about the how but the important thing is that we did stop it."
"Now we have put Jake into a medically induced coma," Dr. Linville said and Mrs. Gibson gasped.
"It's to help him heal, Pam," Dr. Golden said soothingly. "He'll be all right."
"That's our hope," Dr. Linville nodded. "The rest will allow his brain to shrink back to it's normal size and for his body to start healing without him hurting or having to watch how he moves."
"How long... how long will be like that?" Mr. Gibson asked.
"We aren't sure," Dr. Linville answered honestly.
"We will monitor his condition and see how it goes," Dr. Yang said.
"We've done all that we can for tonight," Dr. Linville told them. "He has a room in the ICU and I can walk you back when you're ready."
"I'll stay here with Shelly," Dr. Golden said. "Go see Jake and let him know that we're all praying for him."
The Gibson's nodded and walked slowly toward the door to the ICU as the clock on the wall ticked toward midnight.

Patrick sat on a stool in his parents garage. In one hand he held a bottle of beer and in the other, his cracked cell phone. He frowned at the crack that ran across the face of it from where he slammed it onto his desk earlier. He blamed Somer for that but in his mind it was all because of Jake.
"Fucking Jake," He muttered as he took a sip of his beer.
He watched as the time ticked over to midnight and a smirk crept onto his face. He raised his bottle toward the minimally damaged front end of his car in a mock toast.
"Happy fuckin' New Year, Jake," He chuckled. "You sure got yours started with a bang didn't you?"
It is a really terrible thing when a person has this kind of emotional/anal reaction to another human being, to the point of inflicting grievous bodily injury on them like Patrick did. He OBVIOUSLY does not realize that his world, and future, has ended for him, with this SO RECKLESS action. We can all take a lesson from this...
Mr Fishel...he is gonna see the contact marks from Patrick's car...connections will be made...an experienced individual like him is going to be more than what you have already rewritten him to be...I know, from my own experiences as a crash investigator!!
Jessica and Jake...coming through this like they always do, I have a feeling; Sarah will need a little help, but she has great family to bring her along!!! Same with all the Misfits...they stick together and help each other, especially now!!
Five**5**Stars...wanted to not score it, because you made me cry...but you deserve all kinds of points for this chapter... keeping it real for us!!
Really great chapter. My kids are grown and I got emotional reading this chapter thinking "there but by the grace of God" - this is what all parents dread. Really well written.
Thank you for putting these stories together we really enjoy them.
Man I had to stop reading a few times to keep from crying, my eyes were watering up.
EMS scene is spot on. I've 18 years as an EMT, 5 in the Brockton. MA 911 system. Sometimes the best you can do is pray, call ahead and apply diesel- and shout 'Outta my way ass wipe!' Prayers are always answered- sometimes no, sometimes yes. You never know until you ask...5 stars
