"Lovely," Eltar remarked. "I believe you will have mastered the language before you know it."

"I still don't get it," Penny said. "I have the translator in my ear now. Everybody has them! Why do I need to learn the language?"

Penny had an early dinner, and wanted to go for another ride. She went down to meet with Groovi, and the two of them took the myxlos out into the plains again.

Groovi shrugged. "I have to. I am a slave."

"Yes," Groovi said flatly. "I have the legacy. My mother and grandmother were each slaves. It is our destiny. I am lucky to be working with the myxlos, though. I am content." "It might be worse, ma'am. My friend and I stopped a whole caravan of slaves," Penny explained. "I don't know what else is out there. You need to confront this issue."

The queen sat and looked sad and tired. "I will hopefully regain my strength. Then I can confront this issue with fairness and tact." She gave Penny's hand a squeeze with her bony little fingers. "I knew I chose wisely. You care for the citizens, even with being from another world."

"Can you do me one favour?" asked Penny. "Groovi. Release her now. Please."

The queen nodded. "Agreed."

After a quick lesson from Eltar, Penny felt like seeing more of the plains. Groovi took a picnic bag with them, and they rode out with the myxlos out to the giant rock slab about twenty kilometres from the palace.

Groovi set up a campfire, then the two of them cooked up some dinner. The myxlos picked at the sparse desert grasses.

The women left the campfire and went to climb on a large red rock, which was almost perfectly flat at its top. Groovi got her blanket laid down, and the two of them got close as they stared up at the sky.

"Look at that!" Penny pointed up and traced her finger along the white belt in the sky. "That's the Milky Way! You can actually see the arm of the galaxy."

"That is fascinating," Groovi said in a dreamy tone. "Where is your star system?"

"God, I don't even know!" Penny sputtered. "It's not too far away. I feel so weird being on another planet and looking for my own sun in the sky."
