It had been a long plane ride to Guam. This was my second visit to the island. My job brought me here and I was scheduled to stay for 10 days to two weeks depending upon how the job went. During my first visit I learned about the places to avoid. Guam is host to significant US armed forces resources - navy, air force and marine bases. Like any place where there are significant numbers of young men on military duty, there are places that cater to those young men when they are on leave. I had no interest in any of those places anyway, but it was good to know where they were so I could avoid them. I was here to do my job, not hook up with some girl who would be young enough to be my daughter.

The next morning I attended a briefing and my work wasn't scheduled to begin until mid-afternoon. After the briefing I knew a long swim would help me get over the long trip over and jet-lag, so I headed over to the Pan Pacific Sports Center pool. Walking in I saw I was lucky - it wasn't crowded. After changing in the dressing room I saw lanes 6 and 7 were empty so I walked over to lane 7, stopped and took off my pool sandals and tucked my locker key inside one of them. When I turned toward the pool I saw that a beautiful young woman had just walked up behind me. I had not noticed her before. I figured she must have left the women's dressing room right after I passed it. She looked at me and said, "Will you swim in lane 7?"

"Yes, I planned to" I replied, "Unless you want lane 7. Then I could take lane 6" I said pointing to that lane.

She smiled and said, "Oh no, I'm sorry. You arrived first. I just wanted to ask if you were going to swim in lane 7. I can swim in lane 6." She looked Asian and had beautiful brown eyes. She was dressed in a navy one-piece French-cut swimsuit and she looked spectacular! I thought she was likely in her late 20s or early 30s and she had shoulder length brown hair. She was buxom with noticeable curves and looked fit. Most competitive women swimmers don't have tits like this lady so I thought to myself that she was likely just a recreational swimmer, like me. The French-cut swimsuit made her legs look long and lovely. I felt an instant attraction to her. I'm an older guy, probably old enough to be her father, and knew that I shouldn't be attracted to a woman her age, but then I thought to myself, a man would have to be made of stone not to be attracted to this beauty.

I was hoping to come back to swim on other days so I asked her, "Is this a good time to come?" She got a puzzled look on her face, so I rephrased, "I mean, it seems not so many people are here, so is this time of day a good time to come swim since there are fewer people?"

She replied, "Oh, I think this is normal most of the time. Most people in Hagatna prefer to go to the beach and swim in the ocean rather than a pool. Is this your first time here?"

"Yes, first time in this pool. My second visit to Guam." I couldn't help but be struck by her beauty. She was quite pretty and her body was probably the envy of 99% of other women. My body was reacting to her eyes, her face and her body - I could feel my cock growing and swelling in my Speedo swimsuit. Oh shit! There is not a lot of fabric on a Speedo to contain an erect cock and I could feel mine was getting bigger by the second.

"Ah, OK. I think you will find that you can come here most times of the day and you will not have to wait for a lane to swim in" she replied.

"Thanks" I replied. I looked over to her and said, "Have a good swim" and walked quickly to the poolside and jumped in. I didn't want to embarrass myself with an erection in front of her. I really hoped that she didn't notice it while I was still on the pool deck. Now that I was in the water it wouldn't be noticeable and once I had done the first lap or two I knew that the erection would go away. I put on my goggles, started the stopwatch function on my sports watch, and started my usual 1600 meter swim.

I noticed she started her swim in the lane next to me when I was on my return 50 and every lap we would pass each other twice going in the opposite directions. She stopped a few times to take a break but my routine is to keep going until I have finished all 1600 meters. After about 30 minutes I noticed she was getting out of the pool and sixteen minutes later I had finished. She was nowhere to be seen. I grabbed my keys, slipped on my swim sandals, walked to the dressing room, took a quick shower and got dressed. When I exited the dressing room I went to turn on my phone to get an Uber to someplace to get breakfast but noticed that I had forgotten to charge my battery. It was really low. Crap! I turned it off and walked over to the service desk. I was in luck, the guy behind the service desk said that the number 51 bus stop was just outside the pool gate and if I went four stops Papa Joe's Café was there and the food was good.

I walked over to the bus stop. Yep, the 51 stops here. Nobody else was at the stop and with my phone dead I decided to just stand there and watch Guam go by until the bus arrived. A car pulled out of the pool parking lot and slowed as it approached my bus stop. It stopped in front of me and the passenger window slid down. The driver leaned over and I saw her face - it was the woman from the pool! "Where are you headed?" she asked.

"Ah, Papa Joe's Café. For breakfast" I replied. I didn't want to tell her that I had forgotten to charge my phone; she'd probably think I was an idiot.

She looked up at me from inside her car. She was wearing sunglasses so I couldn't see her eyes. "Papa Joe's. Is there any special reason you are going there?" she asked.

"Well, the guy at the pool recommended it" I replied. I had not done my homework before about good breakfast places.

She hesitated, and said, "Papa Joe's is good for lunch, but it's not the best breakfast place, if breakfast is what you want. I know a better place and in fact I'm going there now for my breakfast. If you want to try it, hop in." I don't usually accept rides from strangers, and especially in other countries, but we had spoken at the pool and she seemed nice; plus, I've never been offered a ride with a woman as hot as her although I tried to push that aspect of it out of my mind. There's no way a woman who looks as good as she does would be interested in a guy my age. I opened the passenger side door and slid in.

"Thanks. You are very kind" I said looking over at her.

She smiled and said, "No worries. People here in Guam are kind and friendly. We have to be. We all know each other, and if you go far enough back, most of us are related. Buckle your seatbelt please. I could get a ticket." As I buckled up she put the car in gear and we started down the road. "Besides, if I thought you were not a nice guy I would not have offered you a ride. You are a nice guy, aren't you?" she asked looking over at me expectantly.

"Yes. Yes. I'm a nice guy. At least I think so but I guess I'm not an impartial judge."

She laughed. "You from the states?"

"Yes. Yes." God, I was repeating myself. A sure sign I was a little nervous. "Arrived yesterday. Here on business. I guess you live here?" I asked. As soon as the question came out of my mouth, I regretted it. "You idiot!" I thought. "Of course, she's from around here. If she didn't think you were an idiot before, for sure she knows you are an idiot now!" I just looked straight ahead knowing it was a stupid question.

She laughed again, "Yes, Mr. Holmes, I do live here" she replied and looked over at me with a smile. She knew it was a dumb question but she was kind enough not to tell me so.

"Thanks again for giving me a ride" I said, "I'm Sam, by the way." I'm old enough to be old school and it was my custom to introduce myself to strangers.

"Shinny" she said looking at the road ahead of us. Looking over at her as she drove I couldn't help but be amazed that I was sitting only inches away from a real beauty. I moved my eyes away from her and consciously looked ahead because I didn't want her to feel like I was staring at her. I knew I could sit there and look at her all day. I also dared not look too much at her because I could already feel my cock hardening in my shorts. I definitely did not need a repeat of what happened at the pool.

"Shinny. Hmmm...I know a woman with the last name Shin. Korean American" I responded.

"That's better, Mr. Holmes" she said and looked over at me with a smile. "You got the Korean part right." I had to smile also. The woman had a sense of humor. She had not driven long before we pulled into the parking lot at Shirley's Restaurant. It was pretty full. This must be a good place, I thought. She put the car into park and looked over at me. "Let's go. If you want to have breakfast together, I'm fine with that, but you can't buy me breakfast."

"OK, I'm good with that. Thanks" I replied. Shirley's is a very casual place and once we stepped inside it smelled delicious. It is a big restaurant with 4 top tables with teal blue chairs in the middle and booths around the perimeter. We sat at one of the tables and I ordered a cup of coffee. I wanted something I couldn't get back home so I asked Shinny if she recommended anything local. She suggested the Portuguese or the Chamorro Sausage Omelet. I went with the Portuguese and a side of sweet potato fries. Shinny ordered the Chamorro Scramble with hash browns and coffee. The place was busy. It was a diverse crowd. I saw a handful of young men who looked like they could be soldiers on one of the bases here. Everybody else looked like they could be local - surfer dudes to business people to just plain folks.

She looked over the table at me and said, "So, Sam, tell me about yourself" and she took a swig of coffee and looked at me expectantly over her cup.

It isn't very often that I'm asked to tell someone else about myself. I was caught slightly off-guard, but she asked so I thought I should respond to the best of my ability. "I'm here doing some work for the armed forces. It's not secret or classified work but I think I shouldn't describe it or discuss it. I'm divorced with three grown children. I like history, geography, sports and travel. I like to exercise and try to stay in shape by doing 200 daily pushups, swimming regularly and eating well. I like to read and I'm interested in the components of leadership. How's that?" I asked looking at her.

"Interesting" she said looking at me. "Components of leadership? What do you mean?"

"Well' I took a sip of coffee and continued, "what is leadership? What is it made of? How do you build leaders? How do people get other people to follow them? That kind of stuff."

She smiled and asked, "And what have you learned? What is it made of?"

The server showed up with our food and then came back to top up our coffee. While we ate I told her that of course there is no hard and fast definition of leadership, nor recipe for how to create it or build leaders. I did say that current thinking seems to show that there are positive correlations between leadership and authenticity, emotional intelligence, and empathy. There also doesn't seem to be any relationship to being either extroverted or introverted, emotional or rational, or high intelligence. She seemed very curious about the subject and asked lots of questions.

"Authenticity. I can see that. People shouldn't be afraid of being themselves, right?" and she looked me in the eyes. I felt like she was looking for something, or somehow testing me, but I didn't know why or for what. "Would you say you are authentic, Sam?"

"Well, I try to be. I think it's a good way to live. I think it builds trust" I said, "And trust builds good relationships."

We finished our meals. Mine was good and filling. She refused my offer to buy her breakfast. We left Shirley's and I asked where the nearest bus stop was. She responded that she didn't know because she didn't often take the bus. "Where are you staying? If it's on the way I'll take you there" she said.

Wow, I didn't expect this, I thought. "You've been very kind already and I don't want to inconvenience you" I said. I looked over at her but she didn't say anything, so I continued, "The Wyndham Garden in Tamuning. The US government has negotiated a preferred rate there."

She thought for a second and said, "It's on my way, Sam. Come on, I'll drop you off." Walking to the car I gave silent thanks - this must be my luckiest day ever, I thought. We got in, she started the car and we pulled out of the parking lot. At the first traffic light she looked over at me and said, "You said you liked history, right?" It was less a question than a re-statement when she continued, "Guam is full of history and it goes a lot further back than our relationship with the US. You should check out Fort Nuestra Senora de la Soledad. It was built by the Spanish in the early 1800's but the Spanish arrived here in the 1600's. Magellan was here in 1521. People have been living here in Guam for over 4,000 years."

"Wow" I responded, "I had no idea that Guam had been inhabited for that long. The Chinese trace their civilization back about 6,000 years, so that's impressive that people have lived here in Guam for such a long time." I truly was impressed. I made a mental note that it was time to learn more about the people and culture in Guam. I was just as impressed that Shinny knew all these facts and had them at the tip of her tongue.

We pulled into the parking lot of my hotel and she stopped the car and said, "So have you thought more about Fort Nuestra Senora? Does it interest you?" I responded that it did and that I hoped to get down there to see it this trip. "Well," she said, looking over at me, "It's on the south end of the island down near Merizo. If you take the bus from here it's going to take a while to get down there. It's one of my favorite places in Guam and I haven't been there in probably a couple of years. If you want, I could take you sometime." This was a total surprise to me and I sat there dumbfounded. She noticed my hesitation, laughed and said, "Don't worry, I don't bite." Then she smiled and asked, "Do you use WeChat or WhatsApp?" I responded that I used both but preferred WeChat and used it more often. "OK, pull up your WeChat profile so I can scan it. Send me a message later and let me know when you'd like to go and if I can take you I will. I think you would enjoy it and I'd like to see it again."

I got my phone out and pushed the power button. I was praying silently that I had enough charge still left to turn it on. It powered up - 9%. Yes!! I pulled up my WeChat profile and Shinny scanned it. She tapped on the keyboard on her phone and in a few seconds I saw a "Hello Sam" pop up in a message from her. "You got it?" she asked looking at me.

"Yeah, I got it" I replied. I was still dumbfounded. I couldn't believe that I was now connected on WeChat with this lovely lady.

She looked over at me and said, "Sam, I gotta run. I have some things to take care of. Send me a note later and let me know when you'd like to go."

I opened the door and stepped out into the parking lot. Before closing the door, I crouched over to look at her in the car and said "Thanks Shinny. Really nice meeting you. I'll let you know."

I closed the door and she put her car in gear. Then she rolled down the passenger window, and as she was pulling out she looked at me. "Now I know where to find you and you know how to contact me" she said laughing and pulled away.

I waved and just stood there as I watched her pull out the parking lot and disappear down the road. As I walked across the parking lot I thought to myself, "Nice to meet you. I'll let you know". How lame! I could have said something a little smarter and wittier than that! Geez, Sam, you need to up your game!
