"If you're worried, we can ask Reg."

Reg emerged from the flower stalks, making his way over to where Jade and Amaliya lay in the grass. He extended a pincer toward Jade.

Jade held out her hand and touched her finger to the end of Reg's pincer. After a moment, Reg tapped at her fingers. Jade nodded.

Amaliya lifted her head. "Ask him how Alma's doing?"

Jade tapped and swiped at Reg's pincer. When she was done, Reg tapped back.

Tap-tap-tap-tap.

Scratch-scratch-scratch.

Scratch-scratch.

Tap.

"I recognize that," said Amaliya. "From before. Is it...? It's H--O--M--E, isn't it? Home? Alma's home?"

Jade nodded. "You still worried about her?"

Amaliya shook her head. She reached out and scratched Reg's back. "No," she said.

Reg flipped himself over. Amaliya rubbed his tummy for a while before righting him again. "You're a good crab, Reg."

Reg turned his eye stalks toward Amaliya and bounced up and down. He turned a half circle and marched back through the wildflowers, back in the direction he came.

Afterword

Aidoru's song really is an old Appalachian folk song from the 1800s, whose original author is unknown. There's also a Cajun version sung in French, which is what Aidoru is teaching her group of students. But, if you recognize the song, it might be from a famous remake in the 1990s. If you think you know what that is, put your guess in the comments.

Thanks for reading!

.

Once again the imagination and creativity are off the charts. Such a guilty pleasure of selfish escapism from an increasingly toxic reality. Beautiful stuff Wax. (P.S.- I actually google sleuthed the answer to the song question because it seemed familiar.) Kind of a poignant song for the lost girls to be singing, though it perfectly fits the quirkiness of this series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It reminded me of Frere Jacques. Dormez-vous, dormez-vous? I’ve forgotten too much of the rest. Can’t tell you how happy I was to see your name pop up! Missed you! This was a very sweet chapter from beginning to end, with your usual fine humor sprinkled in :).

Perfect , what more could a girl ask for ? With marmite, good friends and a home made from love and kindness, perfect . Reg and his pals had me in stitches from his little glove to the marmite on rice cake liberation and those flower hard hats. Beautiful picture you painted there Wax with the newly rescued lasses all tickling harvester crab bellies whilst drinking tea . Stonkingly good as ever Wax and five more stars for you . Jc

One problem

While I do love the story, I do have one problem with it. It was too short. I'm surprised the harvester crabs don't write. They could keep a blackboard and chalk around for the little guys to write them messages. I'm sure trying to tap out a long message in morse code could get tiresome. Especially if its an urgent message. Like "hull breach in sector 27". By the time they got that scratched out the ship may have come apart.

I did get a chuckle over Reg rolling his eyestalks as the girls conversation went off on a tangent at the beginning. He does sometimes fill the role of put upon older brother. Nicely done as usual Wax. A lighthearted chapter in your ongoing saga. Thank you for sharing.
