Wow! Wonderful. I loved this book even more than the first one, especially because it had the time to focus much more on the interpersonal relationships. I am so looking forward to the third book. Having Guenna's as narrator might allow for a very interesting and different perspective.

Veran has certain people, he pays attention to and I can't wait to see, who is important to Guenna. Whether Giedra's friends are more to Guenna than just Giedra's followers and what she thinks of Seva. I am curious about Seva and Iduallon, too. She is pregnant and he chases every woman around him. Finally, I really like Guenna's wait and see approach about Gerimir and him being the first eligeable man for her. He is honorable and loyal, but pretty naive.

And I just realised that I immediately assumed that the third book will be from Guenna's viewpoint. It could easily be from Giedra's or Gerimir's. A viewpoint from someone we don't like so far would be a little difficult to swallow, however.

I wasn’t ready for it to be over

I didn’t realize how bonded I was with these character until I got really upset that Guen was leaving her father and sisters, probably never to see them again. I look forward to reading about her adventures in the next story.

Superb

Thank you for the hours of enjoyment reading this tale. You are one fine writer with a wide body of work from The Bridge Club to The Three Sisters and I've loved all of them. Your hard work is appreciated.

Over but not done with

The second most amazing thing about your work is the variety of the cloth from which you weave your magical tapestries. Switching seamlessly from silk to burlap to chain mail to god knows what gives your readers an exhilarating roller coaster ride that leaves us breathless with anticipation for your next excursion into realistic fantasy or fantastic reality.

Can’t decide if the most amazing is the quality itself or maintaining that quality in such volume.

Anyway, it’s great to know that you haven’t exhausted this particular vein of gold and I eagerly look forward to the coming tale.

I waited...

...as long as I could, because I knew the end was coming. Obviously, it was too compelling to wait very long. I told you before, I considered this to be your best writing to date. I stand by that. I might have wished for one last burst of excitement, but life is rarely like that, and this ending feels honest. I can’t wait to read the third book.

I wasn't ready

for this to end either.

I guess this is as good a place to wrap it up, since there is a lot of possibilities with Guenna leaving for Hvad. Only thing is now I am REALLY waiting with baited breath to see what "Notomol" brings. I really wanted to see "Nameless" named, though.

Shame Seva missed killing Iduallon by so little. Apt he spawned another child, to show how rotten he was. Can't believe Giedra only broke his wrist and nose...but it was funny from knowing Giedra.

SO MUCH uncertainty left although the Izumyrians aren't coming to hunt down the Uplanders--mainly because we are left hanging to see how Guenna fares in Notomol, and how well she plans with Giedra fighting with her friends' assistance. Of course, that begs the question of uniting the Uplanders with Hvad under Branimir, which only seems the logical course. However by that time, Yevna would be really pushing the years on being able to fight and it would be lucky if Veran were still alive with Sulcen (they would definitely be "grandparent" age). Then there would still be the remaining part on how you describe a logical bridge on how Veran and the offspring fared, along with any other details you decided to include on the Vale. There's also still the wildcard that's unexplored in Dulo's descendants from Izumyr, as there is NO way that completely faded away to nothingness. In whatever fight with Izumyr, there will have to still be some kind of fifth column left over from Ljudevit and Dulo's time to help Branimir and Guenna have a fighting chance over that huge horde.

Any chance you have a tentative timetable on the first chapter on Notomol?

Thanks for handling this 2nd series with such care. I really want to read about Guenna's and Giedra's triumphs, and what Branimir was able to do. With such a unique name, he has to go big.

Aspern, You once said that you are often criticized by your abrupt endings. I have grown to appreciate them. Especially in the the war stories I like so well. They radiate a 'life carries on' approach without the cheesy 'end of an era' endings that, in my opinion, drag the story down. As always 5*

Amazing

Thank you so much for writing such interesting characters and a wonderful story. So much respect for Guenna and my heart broke for Veran when she told him. I find the characters all so moving, I'll be sad to leave them, Tan, Yevna, Sulcen. I also wish we had more of their personal tales, but I understand in some ways they are more "complete". Or at least I feel we're leaving Yevna with a little unhappy unfulfilled feeling. Or maybe I guess I wish I had more interaction between Yevna and her friends, but that's the Veran view point of the story taking precedence. You deftly leave a lot for the reader to surmise, and you leave me wanting more! Congrats, and hope you and your loved ones have a good festive season.

Good job

You are one of my favorite writers on this site, I pay for books on my kindle that aren’t as good as your stories.

This was a great story, my heart stopped in my chest when Guenna told Veran she was leaving. I see Guenna becoming the hand to the Duchess, and the new Borna, but please don’t leave her to the same fate as the last hand of Borna, it would break my heart. As a favor To your readers, you can kill of that ungrateful bitch, the duchess, in the next story.

Thank you for your time and effort KS

I’m so hooked, it’s becoming a pain in the ass!

How didn’t I discover this series earlier? It is so compelling, so well written, and so damned difficult to put down that it’s become a problem for me (in the best possible way). I know nothing about the author- I suspect he or she may be a ‘professional’ or possibly published writer. Irrespective, he/she can be really proud of an excellent piece of work.

Thanks for sharing! This is truly excellent work.

KiesoKiesoabout 3 years ago

Thanks so much for this story. It was outstanding!

As you develop the plot and characters in The Chronicle of Notomol, I hope you'll resolve, or perhaps develop, the problem I’m having with Three Sisters’ plot; namely, Guenna’s betrayal of her father. Guenna spent weeks (months?) conspiring, behind Veran’s back, with the Lowlanders, Seva, Odma, Giedra, Rion, Eliv, and dozens of others… even including, it appears, Veran’s wife.

I think you’ve tried to wrap it all up through Veran’s perpetual blindness to his family’s desires and his forgiveness, and acceptance of Guenna’s decision to leave. However, it doesn’t really tie it off for me because the impact of her deceptiveness was more than a family issue (Guenna’s conspiracy resulted in her taking thirty fighters away from the town by keeping Veran, the towns new chieftan, in the dark).

This raises two issues; Firstly, all of those with whom Guenna leaves, Uplanders and Lowlanders alike, have watched her conspiracy. Irrespective of her father’s forgiveness and acceptance, they would all be wise not to trust her too much. Secondly, it all begs the question, how much of Guenna’s decision to leave was her own agency, vs how much was Gerimir’s careful manipulation of Guenna (a cynical depth to Gerimir’s character that he kept hidden in Three Sisters).

If you begin Chronicle of Notomol with Guenna being highly insightful and self-possessed, and Gerimir being as honorable as Guenna believes him to be, it may fail to ring quite true. Additionally, you may miss out on an opportunity to develop Guenna’s character, and explore Gerimir’s. Even if you don’t delve too deep into any of this, I suggest you have Guenna spending some time being a bit introspective about whether her methods were disrespectful to her father.

Just some thoughts from a fan. Thanks again. I’m looking forward to more of your exceptional writing.

anubeloreanubeloreover 2 years ago

Kieso...what conspiracy? What "betrayal"? What are you talking about?

|

Guenna didn't "plot" anything. That's why the story says "...When the Lowlanders left, thirty of our fighters went with them. Seva and Odma, of course, Giedra and her two friends. And my daughter. Only 14 were young men; the remainder were women. ..." because most of the people going with Guenna made their decision *after* Gerimir told Veran that he was leaving, and Guenna said she was going with him. As far as Gerimir knew, it was Guenna, Giedra, and Co. going with him. But when it became common knowledge that Giedra and Guenna were going with the Lowlanders, others decided to join them. Predictably. No plotting or conspiracy required. And certainly no forgiveness. Veran wasn't angry, or upset, he was worried. Well, he was upset his daughter was leaving, but that was because he was worried. Not because she had somehow betrayed him in some Machiavellian fashion, and he was a clueless fool she gleefully took advantage of.

|

And why the hell would Veran begrudge his beloved daughter having as many trustworthy warriors and fighters as possible accompany her into a place as dangerous as the lowlands had/have become? Who was/is more likely to need fighters, the isolated vale, or the party going into territory occupied by people who think rape and mass murder are a fun pastime?

|

Yeah. I'm wondering if we even read the same book. You've somehow turned Guenna into a scheming, despicable manipulator, instead of a brilliant, good-hearted, undyingly devoted daughter who seeks pnly to stretch her wings while simultaneously protecting the people she loves more than anything from an incomprehensibly vast threat. But to each their own.

anubeloreanubeloreover 2 years ago

AspernEssling, this story was fantastic. I was sad to learn how swiftly everything Borna at Ljudevit accomplished was undone, but not surprised. It's a pattern that repeats throughout the historical record.

|

I know it's been just a little over a year since this was published, but I hope you still plan to publish Notomol sometime? Because I'm dying to read about Guenna and Giedra's adventures, and to learn how/if they can manage to blunt the threat of the Izumyrians. Perhaps they can also teach them that there are consequences for using rape as a tool of war.

Best writer in a long time

Question As for Guenna ... her story is continued in the third novel about Hvad and the Uplands. The title of that Chronicle will be Notomol.

when is this coming ???

Fantastic story. Don't mean to quibble, but it would be more readable if author used commas in a different way instead of hyphens. If interested, find The Elements of Style by William Strunk online and refer to the portions dealing with commas. But again, great story that I am totally incapable of writing. I just read it for the second time.

Big lesson here: people truly desiring redemption can have it IF they stay patient and dedicate themselves to a cause--and fixing their foibles.

***

Thing is I can't remember a single thing about Notomol containing anything about Guenna, Branimir, nor Giedra unless maybe some footnotes here and there. I'm glad you at least wrapped up Tanguiste's and Yevna's storylines, and provided Guen, Sulcen, Nameless and Veran happy endings. Hells bells...does the 2nd Borna even figure into Notomol?!?? Dammit, man...Now I'm gonna have to re-read that one too!

***

This engaged me just as much the second time. Well done!
