Chapter 15: Taking a Step Back

"Hello?" Jane picked up her phone and stepped out of the class as to not distract anyone.

"Jane Harper?" the voice on the other end asked.

"Um... yeah?"

"Hello Jane, I'm a member of the student wellness council here at Northview University and I just wanted to talk to you about something that another student has brought to our attention recently. Would you be available in the next twenty minutes to come and have a conversation with myself and the dean?"

As much as it hurt to admit, Jane knew that there was only one explanation for this: Bethany. It seemed that the girl had finally gone through with her promise to expose the teen and, in turn, get her kicked out of the college. Jane's head ached as she propped herself against the wall, teetering in a state of weakness.

After hearing nothing for a week, she had finally given into Lilly's constant confirmations that nothing was going to come of the event. It seemed, however, that Jane was right all along. They should have taken Bethany's threat more seriously and now, since they hadn't, Jane's time at school was done. There was little they could do now that Bethany had gone to the dean first. Damage control seemed impossible considering the nature of the issue.

"Jane are you still there?" the voice broke the teen out of her spiral.

"Y-yeah..."

"So, will we be seeing you in twenty minutes?"

"Ok..."

"Great, we will meet on the first floor of the administration building on campus. See you then."

The phone went dead, leaving Jane alone with her thoughts once more. Her head was still aching, but now so were her arms and legs. As if being controlled by someone else, she began to slowly shuffle towards the other end of campus. She remembered that her backpack and belongings were left in the classroom but couldn't bring herself to turn around. After all, she was going to be kicked out anyway, so what would be the point?

With her mind still gone, her legs carried her to the administration building. The closer she got, the worse she felt, both physically and emotionally. It was as if the building was emanating a draining aura, stealing her energy as she approached. Although, it was likely just stress.

Perhaps due to her dazed state, the walk felt incredibly short. Before she could figure out what was happening, Jane was already walking past the front desk and into the first meeting room. Somehow, she knew where to go; maybe the secretary told her? Although, she couldn't remember talking to the secretary. Or even seeing one at the desk for that matter.

"Come on in Jane."

The teen realized that she had opened the door and was now looking into the small room. The man whom she assumed called her earlier was speaking, pulling up a second chair in front of the desk. With him, staring at Jane, was Bethany. The girl had a big grin on her face, sneering as Jane shakingly stumbled in.

Despite it being a regular conference room, it had an almost crushing atmosphere. It drew the teen's full attention, so much so that Jane didn't notice when a man came into the room behind her and closed the door. The sudden sound caused her to jump and stumble backward, eventually colliding with a chair. Bethany chuckled to herself as she witnessed this, Jane blushing in embarrassment.

"Take a seat," the dean grumbled, clearly annoyed that he had to deal with this. Jane apologized quietly, sitting beside Bethany.

"You're so fucked," Bethany sneered, whispering in the teen's ear. Jane had no response, though, and just sat in silence. "I told them everything," the girl continued, "I showed them the pictures I took, all the chats; it's over."

Overwhelmed, Jane could no longer contain her emotions and tears began to run down her cheeks. Her body shook as she crumpled, resting her head on the desk.

"Please do not cry; it will solve nothing," the dean sighed.

"Yeah Jane, stop being such a baby!" Bethany laughed, jabbing at the teen's side with her finger, "I can't believe you are such a loser!"

"We aren't going to continue until you raise your head and act professional," the student wellness counselor sighed.

It seemed Jane didn't have a choice, though, as she felt hands grip her shoulders and pry her up. The teen could feel Bethany's nails digging into her flesh and yet, she continued to fight. Unfortunately, Jane's strength was no match for the girl's, and she was soon staring at the two men once again.

"Great, if you're done with your little episode, we can finally start," the dean rolled his eyes, "I'm sure you already know why you are here, but this is a formality we must cover. Bethany here has provided us evidence of misconduct in your shared living space. Sexual activities involving human waste-"

"She was playing with her shit," Bethany interrupted, staring at Jane, "She's a disgusting pig!"

"Sexual activities involving human waste were being performed without the knowledge or consent of the parties sharing the space," the dean continued, ignoring Bethany's interjection, "Is this true?"

"Yes," Jane mumbled.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you."

"Yes." With so much evidence, she couldn't deny anything, even if she wanted to. Besides, she didn't have the energy to fight any longer. After what occurred, Jane couldn't help but think she may deserve what was happening to her, even if she didn't necessarily do anything in the space she shared with Bethany.

"Very well. As a result of your actions, you are hereby no longer a student at Northview University. We ask that you please back your belongings and leave the campus as soon as possible with no chance of returning. Mr. and Mrs. Harper, I'll need you to sign these for me," He held up a few papers.

"What?" Jane's mouth fell agape, she turned around to find her parents standing behind her, "W-when... why are you here?" she felt the panic return, her vision becoming blurry as she started to waver.

"Jane, why would you do this? All those things they said..." her mom looked equally disgusted and afraid, "They showed us the pictures. Why did you... why is our daughter such a freak?!"

She tried to stand, but Jane's legs were weak. Her head felt as if it doubled in weight, pounding as she struggled to keep it upright. With her vision continuing to fade, Jane stumbled backward, running into the desk and toppling over.

"Oh no, you're not passing out!" Bethany jumped on the teen, pinning her to the table, "This is just the tip of the iceberg; everyone knows."

Unable to move, Jane watched with horror as Anna and Chloe walked into the room. They too seemed disappointed, though more angry than sad. "I lost my job, Jane," Chloe glared at the teen, "I was going to be a teacher and because of your fuck up, I lost my job."

"Let me go!" Jane struggled against Bethany's grip, "I don't want to listen to this!"

"You have to!" Bethany yelled, "You ruined these people's lives, you ruined my life, now you have to deal with the consequences of your actions!"

"Hrgh!" Jane tried to pull herself up, but she was forced back onto the wood.

"That's not even the worst of it!" Bethany gripped the back of Jane's neck, lifting her up so that she could see the door.

A timid Lilly walked in, clutching a handful of papers. With tears in her eyes, she spoke, "Jane, they expelled me too. They said that, due to your actions, I was also responsible for violating student health and safety. Why... why did you let this happen?"

"Yeah Jane, why did you let this happen," Bethany sneered, shaking Jane violently as she laughed.

"I-I- I don't know... I didn't mean to..."

"Yes, you did! Don't lie!" Bethany shouted, slamming the teen into the table once again.

"This is what you do Jane, you hurt people," Anna joined in, though quieter than Bethany.

"Why do you hurt so many people?" her mother now asked, "How could you do this to all of us?"

"No..."

"What is wrong with you, Jane?"

"No, I- I didn't do this on purpose!"

"Yes, you did!"

"You did!"

"You ruined our lives!"

She couldn't tell who was talking, the room slowly becoming a cacophony of noise. With Bethany still pinning her to the desk, gripping her shoulders and shaking her, Jane was too disoriented to tell what was happening. She tried fighting back, punching the girl, slapping her face, but nothing seemed to affect Bethany.

"I'm sorry!"

"No, you're not!"

"Don't lie!"

"Stop!" Jane whaled, tears streaming down her face, "Stop!"

"Jane, calm down!" The voice was new, drowning out the others and shaking Jane awake.

The room was different now. It was dark and quiet, Jane sitting up with a fright. Her breathing was heavy, and her skin coated in a layer of sweat. Looking to her left, the teen realized that it was Lilly who was now holding her rather than Bethany, though she let go soon after. The girl's hair was a mess and her face was red, Jane coming to the sudden realization that it was Lilly who she was hitting, not Bethany.

"It was just a bad dream Jane, it's OK," Lilly whispered,

"Lilly..." Jane was out of breath, "I'm sorry I-I..."

"It's OK."

"No, I- I hit you. Your face, it's all..." Jane shuffled backward in a panic, falling off the side of the bed but managing to land on her feet.

"Just come back to bed, Jane," Lilly reached out her hand, but this only caused Jane to move further away.

Without saying another word, Jane stumbled backward and out of the room, frantically rushing into the bathroom and closing the door. Her stomach was in knots, but her attempts to throw up were in vain. Eventually, she curled up into a ball in the corner of the room, hiding her face in her knees and crying softly.

"Jane?" Lilly knocked softly on the door, coming in after a few seconds without a response from the teen, "How are you doing?" She kneeled onto the tile, rubbing a hand on Jane's back. "How about you come back to bed and then we talk about this in the morning, hmm?"

Jane shook her head, keeping it pressed against her knees. "I'm going to hurt you," she sniffled.

"No, you aren't, come on," Lilly grabbed the girl's hand, giving it a little squeeze, "You need the sleep, Jane. You need it to get better."

Reluctantly, Jane stood up. With the aid of Lilly, she cleaned up her tears and runny nose in the bathroom sink. Hanging the damp face cloth up to dry, she was led by her hand back to the bed where Lilly pulled back the covers and helped her in.

"Try to get some sleep, OK?" Lilly smiled, tucking in Jane before climbing in on the other side of the bed.

"Hey Jane," Maggie smiled, greeting the teen just outside her new residence building.

"Thanks for waiting," Jane yawned as she jogged down the front steps, slipping her arm through the second strap of her backpack. Her recent weight loss combined with textbooks and a laptop meant the bag was quite heavy and difficult to maneuver. Lilly offered to help carry it for the teen between classes, but Jane didn't want to draw any more attention to herself and decided she could manage.

"Ready for your first 8:30 class after coming back?" Maggie knew partially of what happened, though Lilly, Anna, and Chloe were the only people who knew the specifics. And Bethany, of course. Still, she understood that the situation was sensitive and just helped where she could. This largely came in the form of notes shared with Jane as well as giving the teen any homework or assignments that had physical copies.

"Yeah, I... I guess." After her nightmare, Jane had been unable to fall back asleep. Around 6:00 am she eventually gave up hope, getting out of bed and getting ready for the day. Lilly wasn't awake when she left, though this gave Jane a sense of relief as she wasn't ready to face the girl yet. She was barely awake as it was, and that was not a conversation she had the energy for.

This wasn't missed by Maggie, the girl all too familiar with Jane's exhausted state from past interactions. Giving her a quick once over, the dark bags and messy hair were evidence enough. When the teen caught her staring, however, Maggie quickly looked away. "You could have taken more time to recover if you needed it you know," she hoped she wasn't crossing any lines, "I don't have a problem getting the notes for you."

"No, I need to go back to classes," Jane stated assuredly, "I need things... to get back to normal. After all, I'm paying for them. I wouldn't want that money to go to waste."

Maggie chuckled nervously, trying to break the tension, "Yeah, I guess they are pretty expensive." While she acted confident, Maggie was still concerned for Jane's well-being. However, she was not the one responsible for the teen's actions, thinking it best to make mention of this to Lilly in the future. She knew from her visits with Jane during her recovery that Lilly could help when required.

With little else being said, the two girls walked to the center of campus. Doing what she could to help, Maggie did make them stop to get breakfast under the guise that she wasn't able to eat at home, but it was mainly to get Jane some food and coffee. The teen's extremely thin body was something else she was still getting used to, Jane somehow even thinner than before the incident.

With food purchased, they entered the lecture building and waited for the class to start. To her credit, Jane was able to focus more than may have been expected. Some of the details were a little confusing as she hadn't finished reviewing everything Maggie had provided, but the general concepts were making sense.

Although, that didn't mean everything went smoothly. The first time she was handwriting notes in two weeks, Jane found it difficult to keep pace. Her wrist quickly became sore, the teen having to stop every few words just to give it a rest. As a result, she found herself quickly falling behind, her panic leading to messier and messier writing until it was barely legible.

"Are you OK?" Maggie whispered, noticing the teen struggling.

"Yeah, I-" Jane squeezed the wrist of her right hand, trying to massage out the cramp, "My arm is just a little sore."

"Don't worry if you're getting behind, I can give you my notes like usual. I don't want you hurting yourself over intro economics," she chuckled, though it seemed the teen didn't share her sentiment.

"I'm fine, I don't need your notes," Jane replied in a serious tone, quickly returning her hand to paper and writing down the important information. If it weren't for all the annoying formulas and diagrams, she may have been able to use her laptop. Unfortunately, despite her handicapped state, pen and paper were still faster.

Maggie went to apologize but instead kept silent, deciding it better that she didn't distract the teen further. It was clear that Jane wasn't in a good mood -- Maggie speculating it due to a lack of sleep -- but she didn't ask. Rather, she returned to her own notes, keeping up with the professor with relative ease compared to the teen. She felt bad, but there wasn't much else she could do.

Fortunately, the negative attitude from Jane didn't seem to last long as, after the lecture had finished, she was back in good spirits. She and Maggie left the lecture together, planning on following their old routine of going to the library and working on homework until their shared marketing class. However, upon arriving at their usual table, Jane realized she had grabbed the wrong textbook.

"Shit," she dropped her advertising book on the table, concluding that she had accidentally packed it rather than economics when she was leaving in the morning. Pulling out her notepad and a few loose papers revealed nothing else, confirming her suspicions. Still, as if it was going to suddenly appear, Jane continued to ratchet through her bag.

"We can just share a book if you want, I have mine," Maggie offered.

"No, it'll be easier if we have two," Jane explained, gathering up her stuff and jamming it back into her backpack, "I'll go grab it quickly from my dorm. I live in the North building now so it's only a couple of minutes from here instead of across campus."

"Yeah, I know where you live. I met you there this morning, remember?" Maggie replied.

"Yeah, I guess," Jane zipped up her bag, hardly listening to Maggie anymore, "I'll be back in a few minutes."

"OK, I'll get started without you," Maggie replied with a sigh. She was slightly annoyed that Jane wouldn't agree to share a book, but it was clear there was something else at play. Rather than arguing further, she watched Jane leave and got to work.

As she took the elevator to the first floor and walked outside, Jane couldn't help but feel bad. After everything Maggie had been doing for her the past week, Jane was still making her life difficult. She knew that they likely could have shared the textbook, but she was sick of relying on other people for help. Not that she would ever admit that to Maggie, though.

She knew that she was quite rude during class when Maggie offered her notes and, while Jane regretted her attitude, it was far too late to change it. Rather than fixate on it, she decided it best to get her textbook and return to the library as soon as possible so that she could, for once in a long time, give Maggie some help rather than the other way around.

Although, it seemed the universe had other ideas. Only a few feet from the door, Jane ran into a large crowd of students moving in a group to their next class. Unable to push through, she had to wait off to the side of the path as they pushed by. A few stragglers impeded her further, but she was eventually able to move forward.

Already having lost a few minutes, she covered the rest of the distance in a slow jog, hoping to move fast without overexerting herself. Unfortunately, Jane still had to take the slow elevator upon entering her residence as she was in no condition to climb six flights of stairs.

"Come on," the teen grumbled, repeatedly pushing the down arrow until the elevator dinged and the doors opened. After a couple walked off, she got in and quickly closed the doors, pressing the '6' button and waiting. As the elevator moved up, Jane pulled out her phone to check the time; seven minutes since she had left the library.

Getting her key out of her pocket as she arrived on the sixth floor, Jane took a left and began jogging down the hallway. Reaching room 615, she shoved her key in the lock and burst inside. Now the only issue remaining was finding out where she last put her economics book. She assumed it would be on the small desk in Lilly's room, but found it absent from the rest of her textbooks.

"Fuck, where is it?" Jane said quietly, annoyed as she got to her knees and began searching around on the floor. Without finding it here, however, she pulled out her phone and sat on the edge of the bed, texting Lilly.

Jane: Do you know where my economics textbook is?

Her leg shaking, she waited desperately for Lilly's response. "Come on! I have to go back, why aren't you answering?" She checked her message again to make sure it sent, collapsing backward after confirming that it had. The sudden comfort was a surprise, but Jane fought her urge to rest. "Lilly! Come on!"

Her eyelids felt heavy as she laid back, but the teen wouldn't allow herself to fall asleep so easily. Shaking her head left and right, Jane checked her phone again but still found no response. "Fuck I just... I need my..." she yawned, "My book..."
