Yeah, I did look into that a bit when I wrote it (birth control back then), thought I could get away with the fact that diaphragms were made in the 1840s.

I was thrown out of your pretty fun story by the birth control line. Please don't focus on the rude comments, but please do try not to give rude people such an easy target. Finding someone willing to read your work before you post it might help.

birth control did exist prior to 1782

Male contraception is recorded by the Ancient Greeks: the "condom" in various forms and names.

abortifacients - plants and their extracts that can be used to induce a miscarriage, have been known for thousands of years as well.

Using those two facts, it is easy enough to make the contraception ideas in this story work
