Very exciting first story. We need new writers like you. I enjoyed it despite the many word-level glitches sprinkled throughout. A couple of generic observations that may not have any relevance at all. You keep using the word 'bum' which I thought was more of a British usage but this story clearly depicts people crossing the USA. And you use the name Jamel with a e as the 2nd vowel but I have only seen it with 2 a's.

I strongly urge you to either do a careful proof reading yourself or make use of one of us free proof-readers on Lit that are not too busy at all. The way to do a careful proofing is to set the story aside for a few days after you think it is ready, then read it aloud to yourself like a 3rd grader reads. That will turn up most of the silliness.

It is an interesting story, but too quickly written with several obvious grammar errors. By quickly written, I mean you're not building up to a description, you are merely giving statistics. I suggest spending some more time proof-reading and re-think better scene descriptions.

That being said, Gwen should run away while she can. The boyfriend Bill is an absolute jerk and a manipulator of Gwen for his own sick gratification. Bill pressured Gwen to do things with Jamel after asking her leading questions pertaining to Jamel. Bill suggested Gwen follow through with unsafe sex with Jamel, potentially leaving her pregnant with a biracial baby which she showed concern about. It was Bill who prompted Gwen to take sexual liberties with Jamel outside her comfort zone. Everything Bill did was designed to elicit a higher level of sexual tension and excitement in Bill at Gwen's personal risk! Had Gwen ended up pregnant by Jamel there is no doubt Bill would have dumped Gwen in a heartbeat. I wish Gwen could call an older brother, 'Mad Dog' Madigan, and tell him what Bill's been asking her to do with strangers they picked up from the roadside!
