You took your time to craft a nicely paced story. I feel that the "wham-bam-slam" stories are nice on occasion, but to establish a really well-written piece, you need a foundation on which to build. I also feel that a foundation, once built, can support "more" than one that gets right to the point. (Which is a hint that I'd like to see more of this particular story.)
