The guy is a bit strange. He should go and help Mildred with her last months. Emotionally or sexually, it doesn't matter

I think he will go back to Mildred and help her out. I think that is part of why the author shared her situation with us in the first place.

Mildred is on the periphery of this story. The two of them may go back and help her. If you don't think the two of them, then perhaps you misunderstand just what symbiotes are. Anyway, I liked the story.
