18 year olds in those days were still in the agoge(military school) until they they were 21 and would have taken at least ten years to reach service in the kings bodyguard, no matter what a prominent family he hailed

DO NOT base your stories on what you've gleaned from 300, read Pillars of Fire. Spartans with perfect facial features were like hockey players with real teeth (non-existent) even before they left the agoge.
