I could say

that it is well written(But then your stories always are).I could say that your characters seem to be real people(but then they always do).I could say many such things(but have already said them in the past). What I will say is that this story left me with a warm feeling and the thought that perhaps there is hope for humanity after all.

You Touched me where I live

As always well written and the characters leap from the page as real people many of whom you would like to get to know. The story was intriguing and uplifting and so needed in in the times in which we live. The story gives one hope.

Thank You.

great story

wonderful story like most of DG's stories. The only minor complaint I have is that Grandpa had to push him into proposing, becuse he was to dumb to do it himself. Still a great heartwarming story.

Way To Go DG!

As Always your tales are excellent! The characters are real people and the events could be real also. You could have ended the tale with the marriage and everyone living happily ever after but that neat twist at the end shows the extra class you have and put into your work. Thanks again for sharing your talents with us!

Finely written story

The last mountain was a pleasant one, but don't

be fooled, it ain't easy to work a farm and five

children should cause shocks later on.

Very Good

Thank you for writing, I check daily for stories and they are few and hard to find. Then you write a great one so maybe other writers will learn from you to try harder to write better. I'm 53 so maybe i'm from the old school, I just wish there were more good writers like you and better stories. Keep up the good work

Dear Author! With this story you gave me a big mountain of sentimental crap! I'am very sorry - but you've proved in the past you can do much better. This one is simply stupid...----------Bavarian

Good Ending

Taking that boy in was a darn fine ending. It would have been so easy for him to have been bitter about the boy - his ex-wife's lover's son. +++

Mercy is a wonderful trait for anyone to have, and especially for some one who could easily have developed a sociopathic personality due to life's burdens. +++

My, you have once more done an excellent job.

Exceptional ending!

I love the ending. Having them take Jerrold in as one of the famil is a great touch. Grandpa's little talk struck a real cord, both of my folks grew up on a farm and my wife and I are looking for a small one.

Great Story - Loved it

I just finished reading your story for the second time and it again brought tears to my eyes. It was very inspiring, That Josh, successfully climbed seemingly unclimbable mountains . That he, in spite of extenuating circumstances, had compassion for a boy that was not his son and gave him an opportunity at a fulfilling life. That he was able to create for himself, his American dream and live his own very fulfilling life with a loving wife and family.

You successfully under-lined the values that many of us have lost track of, and wrapped it all up in a very well written story. That takes skill and an understanding of the human psyche, both of which you have in abundance. Thanks for a great read and keep up the excellent writing.

Excellent Story

Great character development. I really cared about Josh and Sherry. Good story line and subplots. You wove the story lines together well and wrapped up each line at the end. I especially liked how you re-introduced Jerrold.

I've read many of your stories and you are one of my top three favorite writers. Please, write more Romance stories and the longer, the better. I'll read pretty much anything you write.

AnonymousAnonymousalmost 14 years ago

Thank you for a wonderful story! I cried tears of sorrow for the lost and lonely boy and tears of happiness for the man that he became. You made me feel thru your words and that is the most beautiful thing in the world!

Great Tale

I have read nearly all your romance tales and this is by far the best, I found it one of those stories that you couldn't walk away from and the end was brilliant it brought tears to my eyes. You have done a good job bringing your stories to life and it feels like I am sitting in the middle watching it happen all around me. Just keep up the good work and please more romance, it is really feel good time and make tomorrow a lot brighter than what it might have been.

Tremendous! Awesome!

I was looking for ... you know.... sex! And there is sex.... but sooo much more. This is one of the best stories I've ever read. I couldn't STOP reading it... It made me cry, it made me laugh! It let me feel the love between the couple. But more... it was deeply touching and moving. Simply Tremendous...

I think it has the potential of being a great movie! Does anyone else agree?

Thank you, sir, for a great story!

Grandpa was an asswipe. If he had been half a man when the kid needed him a lot of pain could have been avoided.

I don't see any reason why he changed. You'd do well to go into that sometime.

0649d0649dover 13 years ago
beautiful story..

bigguy323 kinda snapped me back to the grandfather's attitude. The quote of "fucking kid" was not very nice even if the kid wasn't meant to hear it. I think however that the grandad could see that his grandson was going to become a thug if he didn't mend his ways, and he could not condone it by letting him stay. On the other side of the coin, however, his lack of displaying love for his grandson could have been partly what drove his grandson to get into more trouble at school. I'm not sure; yes, he could have gotten in trouble anyway. Seems like a catch-22: lose either way. It seems like he did snap out of in the long-run; thank goodness for the prison rehab group that got him on probation. Thanks for the read! :) I think I've read almost all your stories now as of this time and date, and I have mixed feelings about your work, but on the whole it is very good. You experiment a lot with story lines, and I think it's unappreciated by people who think you should change everything just to fit their tastes and that you probably condone and participate in similar activities such as being cuckolded, which is a ridiculous notion, haha. I will check your stories from time to time if you write more. Once again, thank you for writing! :)

BORN IN A TRAP

Hi Sir Chris over here, I just got 2 words for you "FIVE STARS"

Sir, You kill everytime, you pick up the pen. This story is CLASSIC.

Few lines on the people who were born in a trap.

"Guess we was evil since birth, product of cursed semens, Cause even our birthdays is cursed days....!"

Bravo

I note that my favourite author has made a comment earlier on this comment trail. His strength (apart from his humour) is that the children in his stories actively participate rather than stay in the shadows like 97% of the other authors on this site have 'their' kids do.......as if their stories have no effect on them at all....BS!

IMHO, you've nailed their parts and dialogue perfectly in this story.

Who would think that a reader would come to this site to read a story like this. Thank you for your contribution - I'm going to have to read the rest of them now....dammit!

Thank you for this nice story, DG.

He finally caught some good luck and it really turned out right. Farming is hard work, I was raised on one and got away from it as soon as I could. Big mistake, oh well, live and learn. I would like a farm now to live on, not to farm. I will just be content with my 2.6 acres including a small lake. It is really nice and I will leave it to my oldest son who has lived with us about six years. Thank you again for the great story.

and very well told...at least he finally got his act together and made a name for himself and married a great girl....I like the sentiment that grand father spoke about farming and families being together and eating and talking together...something sadly lacking in today's society of high tech...well done..you write some excellent stories and some real turkeys which you should delete as they do nothing for your skills...

Good story

I was raised on a farm myself and have since continued on the same farm I was raised on. I am 68 and still work long days, but would not trade it for anything. My wife and 3 children as well as our 4 grandchildren are here as well. I don't know if all my grand children will stay here, but its a good life and we have climbed a few mountains ourselves, but like in your story it is wonderful. Really liked your story, It had a lot of true meaning in it. Thanks for posting it and allowing us to read and enjoy it.

But, its in the wrong Category, only because of the limited erotica in it.

"hay barrells"

Yes, I agree with "ventureskrs", I know a bit about farming. I've seen hay stacked around a pole, baled in rectangular cubes and just pitched into a hay loft loose. Recently I've seen hay rolled into huge rolls and left in the fields. Maybe this octogenarian could learn something new? Perhaps an "old dog" could learn a new trick.

Never-the-less, it is again, a wonderful story told beautifully by a master story teller.

Thanks, DGH. .... de Jay

It Is What You Make It: LIFE. FAMILY. HOME.

The most thoughtful definition of society, was what Grandpa starting saying. TV, videos, internet, gaming, all take away from hearing the birds singing, and smelling the air we breath.

Very enjoyable story. A *10*.

I agree with bigguy323

The grandparents failed their grandson. When their son flaked out and abandoned his boy, they should have stepped up and been there for Josh, acting as loving parents. Instead he grew up feeling lost, angry, and alone. Their miserable failure resulted in:

1) 2 years in a juvenile prison because of his anger issues.

2) 3 years where he wandered around as a directionless bum.

3) 5 years spent in prison for another rage-related assault.

10 years wasted because they let him down so badly...

Sherry suffered for it too. She should have been with Josh from the start, but ended up having a miserable life for years, stuck raising two kids as a single mother after her marriage to a total asshole.

All that meant that Josh was saddled with 5 kids, only 2 of which were actually his...

Great story, thank you, but ...

My only niggle with the story, and it could simply be the way you intended the character to be written, is with the grandfather. His behavior at the end of the story is that of a completely different person from the beginning. You do not teach lessons by ignoring a child and withholding love. Thinking about it, I also questioned the stories of the prison sentences. They seemed a little excessive given the provocation.

AnonymousAnonymousover 4 years ago
don't expect capitals from me...

story is sweet, fairly predictable, a bit corny, but...

vastly improved english over author´s many other stories. can´t think of a single egregious grammar or spelling error striking me in the face, though references to god make me want to throw up.

i´ve now read them all. pure escapism, and i should stop it - there's so much to do, so much good writing to read, but must first be found. thank you and good bye.

Loved the Ending

I am 72, born and raised in a very big city, one of the biggest, in fact. Still it was a time when summers and after school was filled with games with the neighborhood kids, of which there were many. We played baseball and football on small lots and easements in the neighborhood, and had a couple of bayous to play cowboys and Indians, or war games in, or just do exploring.

And most evenings found the four of us eating a balanced, nutritious dinner together, talking about current events, while listening to show tunes and orchestral music on the Hi-Fi. Given the fact that both parents worked, that was a pretty good accomplishment to pull off. Wish I had appreciated it more at the time.

So reading what all Grandpa said about days gone by really struck a chord with me, and brought back many wonderful memories. And it makes me wonder how rare that sort of upbringing is to be found today.
