It was pleasant. At times fun. At times funny, and a bit embarrassing for Kathy when her mom related some her childhood growing up experiences. The 'ex' boyfriend was never mentioned. Kathy was sitting close at my side the entire time. Her eyes sparking and her face beaming with a permanent smile. Her hand occasionally resting on mine. Those subtle details were not missed by her mom.

"So, your future roommate already has a place?"

"Yes. It's a trailer just south of the campus, which is great for me. That way I can park in the Arena parking lot. The Engineering building, which is where most of my classes will be, is just a short walk from there. He has an idea for our third guy. He's someone I've known, and lived on the same floor for the past two years. He's an engineering major too. It's his last year too and wants to try something different. To live away from the dorm."

Broaching a subject that Kathy and I hadn't even thought about, "What do you think you'll be doing after you graduate. I mean... any idea where you might get a job?"

"To be honest, I haven't even thought that far ahead. Just wanted to get through school first."

Which was true. I hadn't even thought about it. Thinking back, I think she was probing. To get an idea where I might be working. Northern Illinois? That if Kathy and I were still together, where her daughter might be moving to, if things continued with us the way she could tell they were going.

"I'm going to change into something more comfortable," Kathy said as she got up, stood behind me, gave me a quick hug, and a kiss to the top of my head. I smiled as I reached up to caress her hands. I could see her mom letting out a smile at her daughter's happiness.

Once Kathy had left the room, Judy became a bit serious, as the concerned mom began.

"I've never seen her so happy. She's been like that ever since you sent her those flowers. I have to be honest with you... up to that point... well, I really didn't know what to think. I mean... she told me all about you being introduced in the beginning of the year. Then meeting up at the lake. She's never gone out with her girlfriends over the summer. I tried to tell her to go out. She wouldn't. She's fallen hard for you. The fact that you wrote her letters pretty much every day kind of told me that you weren't just some guy playing with her heart."

The tone abruptly changing, "You aren't... are you?"

I think memories of what her daughter had gone through with the ex-boyfriend entering her mind. At that point I think if she had any idea that that was my intentions she would not have had a problem splitting my head in two with an axe, and then just casually walking away and having a cup of coffee.

In as serious of a tone as I could muster, I said, "Judy... Kathy means more to me than anything. I would do anything, and I do mean anything for her. I know that things happened fast, those last few days of the school year. Maybe it was a good thing... the timing and all. A good thing for the break. We've talked about it. We're committed to make this work through the summer. To get back together in the fall. I would never... ever break her heart. She means everything to me. And... I've fallen hard for her too," my voice cracking.

"Just watching you two, right here for the last hour, tells me that you have and that you're good for her."

I smiled, "That's what our friend, Valerie, has told each of us a number of times."

Coming around the table with a genuine smile, "Come here and give me a hug, before she gets back."

It was a genuine 'motherly' hug, "I'll be looking forward to seeing you in the fall. You're welcome here anytime. Anytime you want some real home-cooked meals, a break from pot-pies and Hamburger and Tuna Helper. Just let Kathy know. It'll be a pleasure. And bring your roommates. We can make it a party."

As she started to clear the table, Kathy entered the room. She had changed alright... into something I had never seen her wear. A sundress.

It was a pale yellow that highlighted her tan shoulders. There was a thin strap that wrapped around her long neck leaving her back completely bare... again without tan lines. A delicate gold chain and pendant rested at the base of her neck. I forgot to ask her about the lack of tan lines. I would have to get the details on that... later.

The material in the front came to each side of her neck, and was tied behind in a bow. There was a valley down the center to about four inches above her navel that exposed her soft tanned flawless skin. The opening at her breasts was wide enough that gave just a hint of the gentle swells of her small breasts and tight enough that even if she turned nothing would be exposed. It was alluring. Again... no tan lines in the front. The material was just thick enough, that just a subtle hint of the outline of her nipples was evident, or it may have been just a pleat. In my mind, it was a nipple. Just the same it was sexy. The dress stopped maybe four inches above her knees. Her long, toned, and tanned legs on full display. Capping it off, was a pair of delicate white sandals. Her toenails unpainted... natural. While she never wore a lot of makeup, this time her eyes were accentuated and her eyebrows thin and the color of honey... just like... well you get the picture. When she would walk, the bottom of the dress would flutter from her hips to the back of her thighs.

My heart stopped as the word, "Wow," involuntarily left my lips. Kathy turned her back to me and gazed back at me over her shoulder. Her eyes sparking as she knew the affect she was having on me as she flashed me the 'Kathy smile'.

Kathy's mom watched as I took in her daughter. I was captivated like I was in a trance.

"You like?" she beamed.

"Huh?"

Coming back to reality, "Wow, Kathy. You look spectacular. I've never seen you dress like that."

"I got it for you. I've never had anything like this. My girlfriend and I went shopping last week. I was looking for something different. She suggested it. You don't think I'm exposing too much do you? I mean... it's not like I've got that much to expose," there was a bit of insecurity in her voice.

"Not at all... Not at all."

"You think your roommates will like it?"

"I don't care... I like it... NO... I love it," with that, she was in my arms. Her head on my shoulder. My hands on her bare back. Her mom again, taking everything in... smiling... approving.

"Wait. Let me get a camera. I need a picture of this."

"Don't worry, you'll get a copy of it too."

She sat right next to me in the car. It was the first time we had been in a car together. I kept stealing glances of her thighs, as the dress had crept up to upper-thigh. She grinned as knew she had my attention, as my eyes would be diverted from the road to down her smooth chest. She sat in close, the faint fragrance of her perfume radiating off her neck. My right hand found her bare shoulder, as she rested her head on my shoulder and her hand on my thigh, as she squeezed. I watched as her nipples became a bit more noticeable in the cool air-conditioned air.

It was 1:15 when I pulled into a parking space next to the trailer and knocked. Steve opened the door... well 'Steve' was his official name... our past dorm-mates called him 'Boomer'. I don't remember why, other than that was the name of the dorm we all lived in, and some friend of his tagged him with the name, and it stuck.

Boomer was also a senior, majoring in accounting. He was from Chicago with a Polish heritage. Stocky and blonde, with the unmistakable southeast Chicago accent.

We had become good friends. Meeting in the dorm two years before. He was an incoming freshman and I was a sophomore. For some reason, we hit it off. We became 'drinking buddies'. Even though our backgrounds were vastly different: small town vs Chicago, we became good friends.

Opening the door, his eyes went straight to Kathy. She kind of blushed. I smiled a proud smile.

"Boomer. This is Kathy... my girlfriend. Kathy... Boomer," I smiled proudly. He looked at Kathy in a bit of disbelief. He later told me that, when I had mentioned in one of my letters that I would be coming by with my girlfriend, he assumed I meant Valerie, as he knew of our connection from the previous year.

Introductions out of the way, we sat on the couch as Boomer called Ken. Kathy had crossed her legs. The hem of her dress riding up to mid-thigh. Those long tan and toned legs weren't missed by Boomer, as he tried to be discrete; but, we each caught him a few times.

Kathy smiled as she cuddled against me and looked around at where we would be spending some 'quality' time. Probably wondering where my bed would be. Her hand gripping my thigh. I smiled inwardly.

"So, what'd you think?" Kathy's dad asked her mom as they sat at the kitchen table.

"Well... he brought me flowers," pointing to the vase sitting in front of them.

"I'm going to have to talk to this guy... he's winning all of my girls from me," he grinned.

"Not this one. But he is a nice guy. Absolutely nothing like that looser she was seeing. I can see why she's so happy... I watched them... oh you wait... you'll see. They're both so into each other. The way they look at each other. You can see them connecting. I've never seen anything like it."

"Then, I really can't wait to meet the guy that has melted our daughter's heart."

Just then Judy had a 'mom' thought... 'I'm going to have to get Kathy on birth control before school starts. I don't know how far they've gone... and I don't want to know... I just want her to be safe.'

She continued, "I think we should all go to the 'Club' for steak tonight. They still have live music...? That little group? It will be fun. Get a chance to watch them. You'll get to know him. I'm sure they'll want to leave early, but then we can have fun," with a little twinkle in her eye.

Boomer knocked on Ken's door. Kathy and I were standing behind him, so Kathy was blocked from Ken's view, momentarily. I could tell when Ken saw her, as he stood there with his mouth partially opened... dumbstruck. Stepping inside I made introductions.

"I remember you. The end of the year. At the lake. Actually, I remember seeing you at times during dinner. Just didn't know your name."

We were all sitting in Ken's room with the door open laughing and having a good time reacquainting ourselves. All of a sudden a girl appeared a Ken's door, walked in and gave Ken a shoulder squeeze.

Jessica, Jess for short. It took me totally by surprise. All the time I had known him, there were never any girls in his life. He told me once that he just didn't want to get distracted and deal with all the drama. Kathy had been sitting a bit behind and off to my side.

Jess was cute with light freckles across her nose, petite (B cup from what I could tell), light brown hair, smooth creamy white legs, and dressed in shorts and a loose tee shirt. As Jess turned, she noticed Kathy, and realized she was not the only female in the room. She also noticed that she was not the hottest or sexiest female in the room. The girls did a quick look at each other. Jess's look to Kathy was one of 'Who the fuck are you? And what are you doing here?' The claws were out.

Kathy picked up on it, as did I, as we each gave each other a look. Ken made the introductions, introducing Kathy as my girlfriend. The girls were 'cordial'.

Jess was an only child from the upper north side of Chicago. I later found out that she wasn't thrilled that Ken was moving off campus. But now, knowing that this sexy girl would most likely be spending time there and most likely spending the night there, every so often. She was less than pleased with the situation. Talk about a 'drama queen'. She left as we all headed out to finalize the rental paperwork. This would be interesting, but not my problem.

It was around 3:00 when we finished the rental paperwork and decided to hit one of the bars for a few beers. It was fun. There were a few others there. Kathy was causing heads to turn -- guys and gals. I was pleased.

Kathy watched as us three guys recalled the dorm life the previous years. She asked Boomer about living in Chicago, as she had never even been to St. Louis. What it was like living in such a large city. What it was like to have such a large high school class, as hers was about 100 classmates, adding, that she knew all of her life.

Ken was Hawaiian, and had not been home during the past three years, although he had an aunt and uncle in Michigan that he would sometimes visit during the summer and holidays. Kathy was amazed. She wanted to know how he wound up here. What Hawaii was like?

I watched as everybody became comfortable in such a short amount of time. Kathy has that effect on people I call it the 'Kath affect'. Kathy was laughing so hard at some of the stories... mostly at my expense.

"I'll be right back," said Kathy as she stood and headed for the ladies room. The eyes of my soon to be roommates watching the fluttering of the back of her dress across those luscious thighs and that smooth bare back.

Boomer was the first to say something, "How in the world did you find someone like her? I mean... she's beautiful, funny, easy to get along with, and hot!"

Ken goes, "I thought you were going out with that other girl."

"Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, earlier," Boomer added.

"You mean Valerie?" they nod, "We were just friends... good friends," I grinned.

"Actually I met Kathy through Valerie. She even encouraged us. We're still really good friends. Actually, the three of us went out together a couple of times. OK. I've got a quick question, and I need to know now, before Kathy gets back. Are guys going to be alright with her staying overnight sometimes? Not every weekend... just sometimes. I mean we'll try hard not to intrude on your privacy and stuff."

They both looked at each other and then back at me, "Are you kidding? She can stay over as much as she wants... I mean... face it... she's real easy on the eyes. And she's really a nice and fun gal. Not a stuck up bitch. Plus we can tell you guys are really into each other. We wouldn't want to mess that up for you two."

Looking over at Ken, "What about Jess?"

"Don't worry about that. I've got a feeling she won't be around too much longer. I'm kind of getting tired of all of her drama."

Just then I saw Kathy on her way back, "Thanks."

* * * * *

"Bill, this is my dad. Dad... Bill," she was beaming with pride at the introductions, as we shook hands. He was doing a double take. Shifting between looking at what his daughter was wearing and me.

He as a good sized man, with a firm grip. His hands told me he was an 'office guy'. A smile and a set of white teeth. His dark brown hair combed back.

"Nice to meet you Bill. I've been waiting a long time to meet the guy that has made my daughter the happiest I've seen her in a long time," his smile was genuine.

"Nice to meet you sir," returning his smile.

"Call me Tom. Please. Sir makes me feel old."

We settled outside on their patio. Tom and I had beers. Kathy and her mom -- wine coolers. All of a sudden the patio door opened and I heard, "Where's mine?"

It was Kathy's younger brother.

"Timmy, this is Bill. Bill, Timmy," I stood but he just smiled and waved. I could tell he got a little of his looks and build from each parent. The blonde hair and blue eyes from Judy. The husky, but lean, build from Tom. He seemed like a pleasant kid. It was obvious that he and Kathy were close.

We chatted for a while. Mainly recounting my earlier conversation with Judy. Her dad asked me what I thought about last year's riots. I told him the same thing I told Judy; but then told him about the rumor going around at the time the university closed, about the Klan.

The two of them looked at each other, "Yeah. I heard the same rumor. Don't know if was true, or not. On the other hand, I wouldn't have been surprised."

That sent a chill down my back, as we changed the subject.

They were nice people. Down-to-earth. My parents would like them. Who knows? Perhaps... someday.

A couple beers later Judy announces, "I don't know what you guys had planned for tonight. We were thinking of all of us going out for dinner. We belong to a fraternal club and they put on a nice steak dinner. It's not fancy, but it's good. And we like to support their efforts. If you want to stay, there is some live music afterwards."

Kathy and I exchanged looks. Then smiled.

"We really hadn't made any plans so this sounds like fun."

Her mom grinning at the non-verbal exchange.

* * * * *

The fraternal club... a 'member's only', just like the club my parents belong to. Both do a lot of charity and civil work for the community. It was 'family night' so there were a range of ages, from little kids to grandparents. Everybody was having a great time.

The steak was good, along with everything else. It gave us all more time to get to know each other. I stuffed my face.

Kathy was still wearing the sundress. She looked fabulous. After we ate the music started. It was a mixture of country and soft pop. Some couples started to dance. I had an inspiration, as I excused myself to use the men's room.

Returning, I ran my hand over Kathy's bare shoulder. She turned and smiled. The touch and smile were not lost on either parent.

Just then we heard, "And now by special request."

The female vocalist began.

'We've only just begun...'

Kathy looked at me. I could already see the tears welling up as I took her hand and lead her to the center of the dance floor. My right hand resting on the bare skin of the small of her back. My left hand flat against her upper back. Kathy's arms around my neck. Her cheek on my shoulder. Her small breasts pressed against my chest. We danced/swayed in our own little world as we again savored the closeness and the lyrics, as other couples joined in. Her mom and dad watching, each with a content and knowing smile.

The vocalist was good. Sounded just like Karen Carpenter.

The song came to an end. Our eyes met. Kathy face moved closer. Our lips meeting. The kiss ended to an applause as we looked around to see half a dozen tables where the folks were standing and clapping.

It's a small community. They all knew Kathy and knew of the ex-boyfriend issues. They also knew of her 'new' boyfriend. Kathy wiped the tear from her eyes. I saw her mom do the same. We just smiled and waved back appreciatively.

Kathy excused herself as she went to the ladies room. Her mom followed her. I sat next to her dad. He gave me warm, and fatherly smile of approval. I was accepted.

Kathy hugged her mom, "He did that for me. It was from the first time we were together, at the end of the quarter. The first time we danced a slow dance. The first time we kissed... In the middle of a bar's dance floor. It had the same effect on me then," as she brushed away another tear.

"He loves you Kathy. And you love him. I've watched you two at lunch, around the patio, and here. When you're not looking at him, he's looking at you. He looks at you the way all women want to be looked at. The twinkle in each of your eyes. Anyone who can't see that is blind. I've watched you two look at each other and communicate, without saying a word. I know a lot of long-time married couples that don't have that type of connection. Except for when you went upstairs to change, and right now. You haven't left his side. I've never seen you so happy.'
