Jude Palmer took the microphone for one final time and dismissed the assembled guests. They quickly disbursed and headed downstairs for Bud Roberts' retirement reception. Before he could get away, I called Chris Hayes back towards the podium.

"Hey, Chris! Got a second?"

"Sure thing, Sheriff. What do you need?"

"One of my last acts as Chief Deputy was to prepare a final notice to be served. And one of your duties as Lieutenant now is to serve those notices and warrants when necessary. And so, as your first official act as a Lieutenant on the Mason County Sheriff's Department, I am assigning you to officially serve this notice. Think you can handle that?"

Chris took a moment to open the manila envelope and briefly gazed at the title page of the notice.

PETITION FOR DIVORCE

Sean Patrick Quinn, Jr., Plaintiff

Vs

Clarissa Marie Quinn, Defendant

Chris broke out into a huge smile. "I think I can handle that, Sheriff. Consider it done."

"Atta boy," I said, patting him on the back. And with that Lieutenant Christopher Hayes took the first steps towards my impending divorce.

I headed downstairs towards the reception for Bud Roberts, shaking hands with attendees, deputies and well-wishers along the way. I wouldn't see Shannon and her family again until tonight when I would meet them out at the ranch for a private celebration, followed by what I hoped would be some more "celebrating" at Shannon's later that night. It was my intent to show up for dinner tonight as her lover and leave there as her fiancé. My right hand reached in my pocket and made sure that the small ring box was still there.

As I entered the reception room for Bud's retirement party he glanced over at me and our eyes locked with one another. My own eyes narrowed and I had a smirk on my face, which did little to hide my obvious contempt for the man. Bud knew it, too, and gave me a sheepish wave, a smile and nod of his head.

That's right you son-of-a-bitch.

Get used to it.

There's a new Sheriff in town!!!

Two things.

1. A good man is just an evil man with great restraint.

2. Victory demands preparation.

5 stars.

I overall really enjoyed the story. The plot was good and it was easy to read. Just a couple of technical nitpicks as soldierboy got his firearms right but missed a few details.

1) Taurus only makes 44 mag in a revolver. Revolvers don't have safeties.

2) A shotgun blast will not throw you back ten feet through the air. Except in Hollywood movies and TV shows you really hardly move at all except for the bits that get removed. Try shooting a thawed turkey sometime with 12 gauge buck and you will see it hardly moves at all. Now imagine how far a 200 lb man you move.

Otherwise a great job in the technical department, including the choice of the MP5 for that application.

Good story and I enjoyed reading it.

However they just traded one corrupt Sheriff for another.

He slept with his Mother in law and with his girlfriend while he was married. Then he blackmailed the old sheriff and the DA.

Then he used a hacker to setup the Sheriff and DA and all of his new Lieutenants are in on it. He gave them favors for their help.

He’s no better than the last guy.

MC was just the lesser of two evils. He was as much of a dirtbag as anyone in the story. Fucked his MIL, broke several laws in his revenge and coerced other officers to do his bidding. But I guess he’s better than the former sheriff??????

An all around good story but way too long mostly due to the sex scenes that went on for pages and pages. They just took away from the main story. A long kiss and steamy night in bed would suffice.

Good story, only slight criticism is the corruption and criminality that he ignores. The former sheriff, ex wife and DA should be prosecuted, otherwise he’s just as bad as them

Sorry but i found it way way too long, i found your mc to be too stupid and his inability to act quickly beyond belief. This may appeal to other local yokels but this is the www and that includes milions of people from all over who could give a shit about half of what you droned on about. I gave up after he found out and did nothing. If it was his house she should have been leaving with her clothes and nothing else. He should have been recording the conversations as he should in any crime scene, and so on.

Thank you.

Like Gaul this story needed to be divided into 3 parts.

Long is better in all regards. Very good work; the story flowed smoothly, and it contained the classic three acts of any good drama. I didn't see any strings left untied (except for completely disregarding Bud's wife in the tale), and the plot was tight and no more fantastical than any other fiction in this genre. Thanks for all the hard work and a good read. Five Stars for me.
