Something in my stomach rose up hotly. I felt like I was about ready to vomit, but in a good way. There was no acid upsurge in my throat, but you know what I mean. Know what I mean?
He smiled again, disarming the defenses that had sprung up in my viscera like hives. "It's all right. You've lost, but you are not a loser." He closed his eyes. I could tell he was thinking of the others. "On the contrary, Miss Stendrath." He reached out his hand for mine. "Care to go?"
I took it. "Naturellement," I said, hoping I wasn't using too much French. "Where to next?"
"Before the next round, would you like to pay your forfeit, since I checkmated you?"
I winked. "Why not?" And then, "That's American for 'certainly'."
We turned toward the elevator. "2419," Vadim said. "My future rating, and room number..."
